If you were previously non vegetarian , what are the reasons for becoming vegetarian or vegan?!

Question: If you were previously non vegetarian , what are the reasons for becoming vegetarian or vegan!?
Answers:
I have been a vegetarian since 1993, reason for less killing!.

During this period of being a vegetarian, i had given birth to a 3!.6kg baby boy ( 12 yr old now, is a vegetarian too, he chosen to be one as well )!.

I am a Alpha Thalassemia Minor ( i!.e is a condition which affects the hemoglobin in blood, this is inherited and is often cause confusion with iron deficiency anemia)!.

Many would think i should not be a vegetarian!. In fact, i have been a being a vegetarian for 15 yrs now, it does not affect me at all, i even donated blood 4 times and planning to donate more!.

To add to this, I never even bother about what food to take, as long as no meat, seafood when I first become vegetarian!. I eat tofu, mushroom, fruits, vegetables!.

Of course, I would recommend that for vegetarian, do read up more on the nutrition portion to make youself feel at peace and not worry about missing anything!.

Sir Paul McCartney said, "If slaughterhouses had windows, we'd all be vegetarians"!.

I was originally vegetarian, then after 8 years went vegan!. I thought to myself, what is crueler: leading a steer into a pen and killing him, or leaving a chicken alive for 2 or 3 years in a 1-foot square cage with 6 other chickens, some dead!? Or chaining a calf in a 3 foot cell, no way to move, and feeding him an iron-less diet so his meat stays white!? Or keeping a cow pregnant constantly so that she can give milk!? I decided that eggs and milk did more harm to the animals in the long run!. So I became a vegan!.

The grain and corn that we harvest to feed food animals could be used to eliminate poverty in the whole world!. Factory farms consume more water than people do, and the pools that catch the excrement and urine pollute the ground water for miles!. Ducks are force-fed thru a metal tube until their livers weigh POUNDS, for foie gras!. Chickens are caged so as never able to stretch their wings!. Their feet grow through the metal grate!. Their beaks are almost chopped off using a hot knife so they don't peck each other to death!. And all factory farm animals are abused by the people who handle them!. They live on diets never meant for them- including their own species ground up in their food!.

Do you need any more reasons!? Email me for the whole story!.

But thank you for considering the animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I saw a news story on my local news about conditions of slaughterhouses where someone had taken video footage on their camera-phone of workers pushing injured and sick cows with a forklift, just scraping and dumping them in a pile until they could be scooped into a stall to be slaughtered, and then a guy giving them antibiotics because they were so sick they couldn't even stand or they had been pushed around with the forklift and some had broken legs and broken bones and were lame and couldn't do anything but wail and moo!. It was shocking, to say the least!. I cut out beef immediately!. I got online and Googled everything I could about the subject, and the more I dscovered, the more sick to my stomach I got!. I became a Vegetarian at first, and then I saw someone's answer on here concerning milk, and heard that there was blood and pus in milk, so I Googled that and sure enough I found out all kinds of things about milk and dairy products and how bad the conditions are for the female cows!. I read how milk contributes to many diseases and illnesses, and how we weren't meant to drink the breast milk of another species!. It just all made sense!. It was an epiphany for me!. I became a Vegan 2 weeks after becoming a Vegetarian!. And I have never looked back!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I never liked the taste, smell or texture of meat!.

So it made sense to give it up!. (What would be the point of eating something you don't like the taste of!?)

I later thought about the ethical side of vegetarianism!.
When I first began (all those years ago!) I was FAR too young to think about animal welfare, but as I got older, I realised where meat comes from and was like ''Oh''!.!.!.

[edit] Sorry about that!. I will explain!. The ethical side is the whole animal rights issues!. I became more 'involved' with being a vegetarian as time went by!. I hope you know what I mean, sorry if I'm confusing :)

An unbalanced diet can make anybody anemic!.
To demonstrate, my uncle eats red meat every day!. He's anemic, even though his diet is rich in the mineral!.
I've been vegetarian for years and years, and never had any deficiencies!. Balance is important!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

For me it started as a choice to eat better!. I read this great book "Skinny B *tch in the Kitch"!. It made me look at things a lot differently!. Now I'm looking more into the animal rights side of it!.
But as far as needing meat and being anemic, I had more health problems when I ate animal byproducts than I do now!. I'm hardly ever sick and don't suffer from half the ailments I used to have!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

try taking supplements to aid vegetarian food, or beter eat a well balanced diet mean consisting of nuts, fruits, dairy products and fresh vegetables!.

It is because of health and religious resons that pple choose to be vegetarians!.

Cheers and hope this answers your question!Www@FoodAQ@Com

The main thing that made me want to give up meat the first time was the slaughtering process and the growth drugs they feed to the animals; it all disgusted me!.
Now that I gave that up for some time and am about to pick it back up, it's mainly about health!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

To be healthy!. When you're young you live fast and don't care if you die young but as you get older you want to live to see old age!. That less animals suffer and there's less pollution in the world is a nice additional benefit but not the main cause!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

well, vegetarianism is actually very good for your body(when you are an adult) because it gives you more energy!. By taking out the meat in ones diet studies show they had an increase in energy and a decrease in diseases!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

When animals are killed, they are incredibly scared!. Their fear and adrenaline stay in the meat after they die!. Then you eat it!.

Seems like a good enough reason to not eat meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There's also the environmental aspect!. It's absurd how much land and water is needed to produce a pound of meat compared to a pound of grain!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Animal cruelty!. After I kept thinking about it, I just couldn't eat any animal or anything from an animal ever again!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I was interested in animal rights, and one of my friends was a vegetarian!.

Other people do it for stuff like healthWww@FoodAQ@Com

sympathy for animals and just grossed out by eating stuff from animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
