Vegans and white rice?!

Question: Vegans and white rice!?
Hi,

I got into a "debate" with a woman at work today who was hosting a dinner party at the weekend with a Vegan guest!. As she is a meat eater, she didn't have a clue what to make, so she bought a vegan cookbook to get some ideas!.

In the front there was a section on what to stock a vegan store cupboard with, and she went on to tell us that the book states that Vegans do not eat white rice, but can eat brown!.

I told her that this is utter rubbish, and she must have read the book wrong - maybe it said they shouldn't eat white rice as brown rice is healthier!?

Have I opened my big mouth without knowing the facts here, or is her book (or her interpretation of it) wrong!?

All the vegans I know eat white rice (I think!)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
White rice is completely vegan!. But many just choose to eat brown rice because it contains a lot of fiber, protein, and complex carbs!. White rice doesn't have any nutritional value other than filling your stomach!.

I think your co-worker may have mixed up white sugar with white rice!. Many processing plants that produce white sugar use animal bone char to filter the natural color out!. But they don't do this with any white rice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegan merely means that a comestible doesn't contain animal products!.

Brown rice, they say, is healthier, and vegans are more likely than most to care about what they put into their bodies, so there is a correlation between being a vegan and eating brown rice, but white rice doesn't have animal products in it so it's vegan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If the woman accepted what the book said without stopping and thinking, she can't be very clever!.

It's pretty clear:

1/ Vegans do not eat any produce of animal, fish, birds (or even insect in the case of honey) period!.

2/ White rice is a cereal, doesn't come from an animal, fish, etc!.!.!. period!.

With those 2 premises anybody with some minimum of inteligence can deduct that vegans CAN eat white rice if they wish!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

She was probably confused!. It's white sugar that we avoid unless we know for sure that it's organic and hasn't been processed with animal bone char!. Vegans eat rice of any color!. Mostly we will eat brown but some are not so picky!.
I will eat brown, yellow, red butan, black, or jasmine ( which is white) and plain white rice if a relative cooks it, just so I won't look too peculiar!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yeah, uh, the vegans I know eat white rice also!.

My daughter is vegetarian and several of her friends are vegan and have been awhile, and they eat white rice!.
Of course, like you said it's not healthy, but I'm pretty sure it has no animal product affecting it's production!.!.!.

I think she read it wrong!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I may not be much help, but here goes!. I dont think you should eat any rice or any grains for that matter!. Uneeded in our diet!. I am a raw foodist you could say!. There is no grain in nature that a human would eat with out denaturing it first, either by cooking or seasoning!. Why not eat what has real flavor and nutrients!. Fruit and Veggies Raw!. But if that is not cool with you then eat whatever kind of rice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The book may have said that vegans can't eat white rice!. Maybe there is a group of vegans out there that don't believe in eating white rice that the author got his or her information from!. Don't be too hard on her, she's trying!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yeah, brown rice is healthier!. But white rice is perfectly vegan!. Either she's interpreting what she's reading wrong, or the book is misleading!. Maybe it's a macrobiotic cookbook!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Brown rice has more protein and Vitamins in it, so it's better for you!. I think that's what her book was talking about!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Since white rice is just refined brown rice - meaning all the nutrients removed - I believe you are correct!. That she misinterpreted what was written!.

The FDA has allowed rice genetically engineered with human liver genes into our food system!. I have to wonder if US rice is acceptable at all by vegan standards!.

I use only Lindberg rice because they do not use GM rice!. But farmers can't prevent cross pollination!.

Now, there's no way to interpret THAT via your friend's cookbook!. Refining from brown to white does not strip away the human liver DNA!. So if someone suggested that in a cookbook THAT would certainly be utter rubbish!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
