Vegans: do you ever just say you're lactose intolerant in restaurants to avoid the hassle?!

Question: Vegans: do you ever just say you're lactose intolerant in restaurants to avoid the hassle!?
When I have to go to a 'regular' restaurant with friends or family, I almost always order a salad, without the meat, cheese, egg, etc!. that it usually comes with!. Then I have to ask if there's cheese in the dressing, and the waiter or waitress usually seems annoyed that he/she has to go check with the kitchen!. I've also been in the scenario where I order my salad without cheese, and they bring it with cheese, so I have to send it back!. In that scenario, I almost always claim to be lactose intolerant!.!.!. then they are truly apologetic instead of ticked off at me!.

I know I should 'represent' the cause, but in daily life, it doesn't always work out so well!. Does anyone else have little white lies or excuses they use to explain why they don't want to eat dairy/egg!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not Vegan, but I'm a VERY fussy eater & I do have some food allergies and I will often tell the waiter/waitress "I'm allergic to xyz" (even if I'm not) because it really seems like it causes them to pay attention and get my order the way that I want!.
"can you leave x off" alone doesn't get through to them!. BUT if you say, "I'm allergic, could you leave x off" - - they are so nice and polite to you and they really make sure your order is how you asked for it!.
Sad that you have to tell a lie to get food prepared how you like it (after all YOU are paying them for it, right!?) but if it helps you get what you want, the way you want - - i say GO FOR IT!.

As an aside - I'm cool with anyone that wants to be vegetarian or vegan (I'm having a veggie option at my upcoming wedding) and I admire the willpower it must take to live that lifestyle!. But I hate to hear anyone's lecture about why I should be eating meat so I want to say THANK YOU to you for noting that you don't or can't do that all the time!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I usually say I don't eat meat and that I can't have dairy and eggs!. It's a lot easier than explaining "vegan" in many restaurants!. But if possible, I try to avoid places where they don't know what "vegan" means and can't accommodate me!.

Sadly, an omni restaurant isn't the place to represent the cause!. They probably don't care!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i can see that!.!.!.!. if your a vegan your just causing trouble!.!.!. if your lactose intolerant though then that's ok!.!.!.!. know what else!? religious reasons!.!.!. if it's religion it's ok no one will say anything, but if it's just your own morals and ethics than your just causing trouble!.!.!. interesting right!? it's not fair at all!. but i understand!. sometimes it is a hassle to explain and answer and get dirty looks and hear comments and who wants their food spit on right!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

No!!!Just tell it like it is, hand them a brochure and tell them to educate themselves on what they are eating!. You have a right to eat how u want, just as anyone else and stand up for animals anyway you can!! I am vegetarian many years, not vegan,im lacto!. But consume minimal dairy, and my milk is silk/soy brand!. good luck!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, animal rights is something I am passionate about and I never miss the oppurtunity to speak the truthWww@FoodAQ@Com

Yes I do - but then I am lactose intollerant, so its not a little white lie for me!. lolWww@FoodAQ@Com

I'm an omnivore, but there are several things I can't eat, including dairy, shellfish, cured meat, and mushrooms!. To avoid the hassle of saying, "does the sauce have shellfish ingredients, I am allergic" and "my doctor told me not to eat cured meat becaues I get migraines" and "is the meat cooked in butter!? I'm lactose-intolerant!?" I usually just tell people that I'm kosher!. It's a lie (I'm not religious at all), but oddly enough my dietary restrictions really do resemble a kosher diet!. When I tell waiters this, I usually get the surprised/apologetic "Oh!" and they get me exactly what I want!. Many times I just end up ordering vegetarian stuff, though, because restaurant meat dishes are so gigantic!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i follow the Sattvic Hindu diet (very strict lacto vegetarian) so i just say i'm deathly allergic to eggs!. gets the point across most of the time, and i don't take my chances with things that may have lard, gelatin, or animal fat if i can!. sadly though i'm sure some things slip when i eat out!. a friend of mine actually is deathly allergic to spinach, and she just had a mis-hap a little while back even after asking the server a million times to check!. she even busted out her Epi pen to reiterate the importance to the lady when she ordered!.

i guess you just can't trust food you don't cook yourself!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Actually when necessary I ask for the ingredients but most often I mention I am vegan or something to the effect of no cheese please!. Usually if you specify no cheese, mayo, cream, egg, etc which usually you have a pretty good idea which items they might be in (in pizza and cheese) then you don't have to ask for them to go and specially check!.

I have on occasion gotten food items with cheese or sour cream, but not egg!. In the spirit of freeganism I usually just suck it up and eat it and strive to be more careful next time!.

Be proud of who you are and don't be afraid or embarrassed to allow others to see how you are choosing to live as it is a virtue to be exemplifized!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not a vegetarian any more but I was raised that way!. You should try going into a McDonald's and ordering a cheeseburger without the burger!. This was back in the eighties, and boy I sure got some funny looks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If they are annoyed, that is their problem!. A restaurant is meant to be a place where someone can go and get exactly what they order and how they order!.

You have no reason to explain why you can't have cheese or meat!.!.!.that is personal and I wouldn't tell them unless they asked!.

But yes, when asked I say I don't eat animal products!. I don't say that I'm vegan because I fear they will purposefully hide something in my food!. On one occassion I said I was allergic which doesn't really do any good anyway because no one knows what the ingredients really mean except us vegans!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I usually say I "can't" eat dairy versus I "don't" eat dairy!. If someone misinterprets that to mean I'm lactose intolerant or allergic, so what!? Like Veggie Tart said, an omni restaurant is not really the place to preach the cause!. They don't care and annoyed kitchen and wait staff have been known to adulterate food!. But they have to take allergies seriously, so I see no harm in allowing them to believe that might be an issue!. I'd rather save my breath for discussing it with someone who is genuinely interested!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not vegan, but I have found myself in this type of situation, as probably most people have!. I am diabetic and of course cannot eat certain things!. I usually order iced tea to drink!. Several times the wait staff at different restaurants have brought me sweet tea, making an assumption that this is *really* what I meant!. Than I have to tell them, no I didn't say sweet tea and don't want sweet tea!. and on and on!.!.!.!.!.

I think it shouldn't matter whether you order something because of a medical condition or because it's a choice!. If you order something a certain way, then that's how it should be brought to you!. Wait staff should not treat any person any differently just because of how they order their food, or if they want to know the ingredients of a particular item!. And they don't have the right to know why!.

Let the management know about poor service and or treatment from their wait staff!. They will want to know!. If wait staff is acting this way, then they are hurting business!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i'm a vegetarian, not vegan, but i'm actually lactose intolerant (i just cheat sometimes and end up sick)!.!.!.!.!.!.!.

i have to say that claiming allergies is much more effective than telling someone you're veg and hoping they won't mess with your food!.!.!.!.!.however, i don't like to lie and say that i'm allergic when i'm not!. i just tell them how i want my food and if it doesn't come out right it's my right as a customer to send it back and have it prepared as i ordered it!.

no one needs to know why you don't eat meat, dairy, eggs, etc!.!.!.!.but as long as you are paying for your food they are OBLIGATED to supply your specific order!.

i have worked in restaurants where servers would give diabetics a regular coke (which has INSANE amounts of sugar) and then whine when they had to get a new one!.!.!.!.some would only dump out half the glass and fill the rest with diet coke!. i just don't trust servers after working with them!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.

if they don't do their job, talk to the manager!. if they purposefully serve you something that is against your beliefs, let them know that they are walking a fine line!. especially if you are vegan for religious reasons this can be claimed as discrimination!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
