Why are people so offended by vegetarians and vegans?!

Question: Why are people so offended by vegetarians and vegans!?
I just don't get it!.!.!.!.!.
I realize that some vegetarians and vegans are really pushy about their views, but what do people have against the ones that aren't!? Most of the contributors on this forum are not pushy, rude, or preachy when it comes to their diet or lifestyle!. We will, of course, respond to questions asked as honestly as possible!. I'll give you that a few of them really suck at being delicate for the cause, but most are just nice, helpful people trying to get or give advice just like any other section on Y!A!. What's so offensive about that!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

There seems to be a myth that vegans are intolerant of others views because they believe only they are right and that everyone should live their lifestyle with no room for any compromise, I have actually found that to be far far more true of meat eaters towards vegans that the other way round!.

My personal experience is not so much that people are offended by vegans but more defensive of their own life choices – even when not given any reason to be!. I know a lot of vegans but have personally never met a vegan who 'preaches' at others, and yet we all seem to have been labelled with this reputation and every meat eater seems to claim to know one (or more often that “all” the vegans they know are)!. I never even talk about my views with others unless someone comes right out and says to me "why vegan!?" this has only ever happened to me twice and I just explained my own personal reasons for not wanting to eat or use animal product, in a non confrontational way, but virtually no one asks that, most people just ask "so what on earth do you actually eat!?"

I have noticed that meat eaters often act very defensive around me, almost as if being in my presence makes them feel 'guilty' for eating meat!. I have never done anything to make them feel this way though!. I am utterly non-judgemental and have always respected that others have made choices in life which are different to my own!. But I still always get phrases like "Tam would not approve but for dinner I cooked!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!." or "I know it would have offended you, but we had!.!.!.!." or "Tam does not want to hear this but!.!.!.!.!." or "you would approve I made a vegetarian thing last week!." It really bugs me because that is them projecting their own discomfort at discussing meat in front of me onto me, I would never judge anyone in that way, what do I care what they had for dinner last Tuesday!? What other people eat does not reflect on my veganism, it’s not my problem!. I would never have given them the impression I disapprove because I don't, it’s not my place to disapprove of other people's choices!. But I have often wondered if this is perhaps where the 'preachy' vegan thing has come from!? Other people’s feelings of discomfort around people with a moral code that precludes something their own does not!. I have come across a few 'preachy' types on here, but no actual real world acquaintances!. And there are far more ‘preachy’ meat eaters on v&v than there are ‘preachy’ vegans!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That is because non vegetarians/vegans feel a threat!. Some of them are still wonderful people who just seem to believe that animals have no equality!. Others feel threatened because they feel like they are being outnumbered in those questions in terms of animal cruelty and no matter how much they wanted to help they don't understand how we give up hamburgers in order to do that!. Some people are just plain mean and they hold our goodness against us because they have no intention of letting different kinds of people into their lives in anyway!. But most people are just scared, because they think that going vegetarian/vegan is the right thing to do but they don't want to because in doing that you take on so many challenges and they just don't care ENOUGH to change their own lives to save someone else's!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't find anything offensive about that!. I peruse this area of YA out of curiousity!. I'm a meat eater!. But I'm cool with people who are only veggie-eaters so long as they aren't too preachy!.
I appreciate people who do it for health reasons and I certainly am all for the humane treatment of animals that are used for food!. I try to buy free range whenever possible so I can feel a little better about the treatment of an animal before it got to my plate!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It all about communication skill!.

Sometimes vegetarians/vegans sound pushy because they really love animals and can't bear to see them suffered!. Just like how parents can be real protective over their kids!.

It could be a comunication problem between vegetarian and non-vegetarians!. Not all are good at communicating effectively!.

Maybe, non-vegetarians got offensive when vegetarian talks about animals sufferring and so don't eat them!. They might think we are "forcing" them to change or say that they are unkind!.

What i wish is all can be real open and constructive on this matter!.

Cheers :-)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not offended, I just get tired of many vegans being so "holier than thou" and telling me I should go vegan "for my own good"!.
The icing on the cake though was when I tried to cook a vegan dinner for a friend's gf and I was really careful not have any animal-sourced ingredients!. The first thing she asked is whether or not I had ever cooked meat in the kettle the dinner was in!.!.!.!.I answered yes, but it had been washed afterwards to which her reply was that the dinner was inedible because the kettle had been "spiritually polluted"!. I gave up after that and will never try to make a vegan happyWww@FoodAQ@Com

The problem comes in when one veger tries to push their views on someone unsolicited or condescends them for their views!. That person then holds ALL vegers responsible, though quite unfairly!.

Here in the V & V no one should be offended by veger views because this section revolves around that!. If veger views offend someone, they should be smart enough to know beforehand that something they read might offend them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Everyone likes to think they're right!. And sometimes it's easier to isolate yourself from opposing viewpoints, and instead of listening to what others have to say or embracing those that are different, it's easier to just hate them or think you're right and that's it, there's no other way!. also, people think they know what it's all about, what people's reasoning is behind it!.

Once you have a stereotype or are prejudice that's embedded in you, you just can't shake it, you stop seeing people and just say hateful stuff!. It becomes easy to attack people because you don't see a mother, a sister, a friend, a charity worker, whatever, you just see one thing and obsess about it: "Omg they don't eat meat blah blah blah"!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I do it for health reasons!.!.!.!.!.I do the "Eating Right for My Blood Type Diet" I am a blood type A and it's basically a vegetarian diet!. I stay pretty quite about it unless it is brought up as to why I am not eating what "everyone" else is eating!. So sometimes I feel embarrassed to tell people I don't eat that for fear that they will view me differently like I have a problem!. So I guess I'm the silent "almost" vegeterian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You can eat meat if you want, it's just a choice I made!. I won't force people to be vegitarian, and people who do eat meat shouldn't put pressure on vegitarians just because we don't eat meat!. * I'm not talking about every single person that isn't a vegitarian, I'm just talking about those who think being a vegitarian is stupid*Www@FoodAQ@Com

if you want to eat meat!.!.!.eat it and enjoy it

if you don't!.!.!.!.enjoy that too!.!.!.

I get frustrated when people turn veggie or vegan because it is "hip" without really knowing what they are doing and not being educated in it!.!.!.!.it can actually make you unhealthy if not done properly, just like if you are a meat eater and eat tons of it!.!.

I wouldn't say I get offended by them!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Every vegetarian and vegan that I know in real life act like jerks!. One of my friends is vegan!. They give me some long *** speech and complain whenever I eat meat!. And they act like they are God's gift to Earth or something!. I'm not saying all vegetarians and vegans are like that!.!.!.this is just my experience!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

because alot of them are preachy and rude!.!.!.when was the last time you saw an omnivore sabotaging a veggie packing plant!.!.!.or protesting outside a whole foods shop!?!?!? the answer is never!.!.!.now how many times do you hear about sabotage at animal slaughterhouses or kfc!.!.!.its almost a weekly occurrence!.!.what does that tell you!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

People like to make fun of other people that are different from them!. They feel the difference makes easier targets out of them!. It's a shame really, because it's not a bad difference at all!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i am not offended by any vegetarian or vegans as long as they dont try to push it on me!. as long as they dont try to tell me that i am a bad person for eating meat or hunting!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because we are showing them a different and ethically better way of life and their guilty hurts them, so sometimes they hurt us!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There are silly people everywhere ! And some feel guilty in deep about eating a life!.!.!. You just disturb them, even if they don't admit it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i think because people have trouble dealing with change adn dealing with people that are different from them!.!.!. you make them question themselves and they don't want to do that!. look you posted an honest, non offensive question and you still got rude answers like the very first one!. but why don't meat eaters get a bad reputation!?!?!? i know a lot of vegs and i'm one, i'm not pushy and no one i know is pushy!.!.!. yet we constantly have to defend ourselves, explain our meals, be put on the spot, get made fun of, have turkey waved in front of faces, etc!. and that's all okie dokie to the meat eaters but then one word from a veg and we're the horrible ones pushing our views!. if a meat eater asks a question and you really answer honestly your being pushy and preachy, but didn't they ask!? how come they never have to explain their diets!? it's not fair, at all!. so you know one veg that's rude!? so what!? i know a ton of meat eaters that are rude and i don't go forward and judge every person i meet after that as being rude!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i think people who arent veggies!.!.!. can be put off by it because they view it as kind of pretentious!. like saying your a vegetarian is like saying your a better person!. of course there are vegetarians who are 'holier than thou' but most of us are somewhat normal!. also, its the age old need to create an 'us and them' attitude!. in the end, i dont understand, its just food, and we should be grateful to be able to choose what we eatWww@FoodAQ@Com

I don't know!. It is ridiculous that they get offended and act as if we're doing something wrong or bad, when we are doing something great and in my opinion beautiful!. There is nothing greater than having compassion and being respectful of another being's life and their right to live!.
You know what I can offended by!? All the people on here who make these insults about vegetarians and vegans and then say something relating to animal violence or how they eat lots of bloody meat, etc!. It really makes me sad and angry how heartless people can be!. But, I choose not to respond!. Many people say horrible or mean things that they wouldn't say in real life, some people would, its the anonymity of the internet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I really don't have a problem with many of the veggies around here!. But the preachy ones really irritate me!. And it's not the subject, rather it's the fact that they are preaching in general!. You're free to your own opinions, but don't try to make the world see everything the same way you do!. When I come here to look at opinions, I am okay with people saying they disagree with eating meat!. But don't tell me that I'm a horrible person and going to hell becuase I ate a cheeseburger for lunch!. Anytime that I come off as offensive or being a prick is usually because someone has insulted my way of life or suggested that MY CHOICE is wrong!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because most of them just act all holier than thou!. Why does that bug me!? Because you have no reason to act that way!. You're not helping animals, the planet, or (more importantly) yourselves by not eating them so don't act like you are!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am not offended by you, I just think that your lifestyle is little more than an absurd plea for attention!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
