Do you think that IN 50 YEARS TIME more than half of the worlds population will be Vegetarians?!

Question: Do you think that IN 50 YEARS TIME more than half of the worlds population will be Vegetarians!?
Answers:
Ok, most of the previous answers were not well-thought!.

Food prices will rise, as they currently are doing, because of scarcity of resources, namely the end of fossil fuels and the overcrowding of the earth (9+ billion people by 2050!)!. As the price of crops rise, the price of meat will in turn rise!. The price of vegetables and grains will always be lower than that of meat because, especially in developed countries, most cows are fed grains such as corn rather than their natural grass!. Cost alone may not be a factor in making people eat less meat, however!.

It takes so much more land, resources, and food to produce meat!. In the United States, over 60% of the grain grown is fed to livestock!. Livestock have an energy conversion of about 5%!. About 5% of the energy (not talking about "nutritional value" but biological energy) in the plants they are fed is left in the meat that we eat!. Meat contributes to global warming (indeed, more so than all transportation combined, including air travel, automobiles, and ships!.!.!. see the UN report entitled "Livestock's Long Shadow)!.

Not to mention the destruction of rainforests, particularly the Amazon, for grazing land and to grow crops which will be fed to livestock!. The simple fact that it takes 25,000 gallons of water to produce 1 (yes, 1 pound) of beef!. And to grow a pound of wheat!? 25 gallons!.

Additionally, the consumption of meat (and dairy and eggs) increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and several other diseases and ailments!. Add to that the increased risk of dioxin poisoning from bio-accumulation up the food chain (more dioxins in animals rather than plants, which are primarily made of water rather than lipids)!.

While the world may not be wholly vegetarian, it is true even today that developing countries, namely India and China seek to live the American lifestyle (e!.g!. eat a hell of a lot of meat and do other activities far more than everyone else)!. China and India alone currently account for nearly half of the world's population!. As they get more automobiles, eat more meat, wear nicer clothes, and enjoy the "luxuries" of Western life, resources will become more scarce!. The looming end of fossil fuels will only add to the positive feedback cycle of global warming, overpopulation, resource depletion, barren land, you name it!.

Now, of course, you can say that I'm just painting a gloom and doom picture, or you can realize that, while I'm not trying to be a smart ***, there is some truth to what I'm saying!. We can either accept it and try to adapt or we can say **** it all!. One needs only to look around and see the exorbitant amounts of resources we waste in the name of luxury-- we're far beyond creature comforts!.

Look at these statistics and tell me how they are sustainable:

In 2003, we slaughtered (in the USA alone!) over 8,000,000,000 (that's eight billion) chickens!. 35 million cows and 100 million pigs!. That's just in the USA and that does not count the ones who died on the farm or on the way to the slaughterhouse!. I won't touch on the obvious ethical implications of our unnecessary exploitation of animals (Exploitation may sound like a patronizing term, but you cannot deny that that is what it is!.)

I'm not asking anyone to become a vegan because of what I say!. Look at the facts and statistics of world hunger, climate change, environmental degradation, and other factors!. Then look inside yourself!. Read literature of both scholarly and non-scholarly types!. Look within yourself-- veganism is pretty spiritual for me, too!. And I'm not just a hippie on a high horse, either!. I've eaten meat before, and I don't condemn anyone for doing what I myself have done!. But I will condemn you if you don't have the open-mindedness to truly consider something from a different perspective!. Read some of the works of Tolstoy, Schweitzer, Twain, da Vinci, Jeremy Bentham, and Peter Singer!. Watch the documentary "Earthlings" for some appalling and gruesome (but somewhat necessary) figures and statistics!. And finally, don't listen to PETA!. Not all vegans, vegetarians, or animal rights activists like PETA!. I don't agree with their methodology or their rash actions!.

Read a little about ahimsa!. And finally, don't feel that I'm trying to act smart by posting such a long response on here!. Honestly, it is only out of passion for the subject!. I do not wish to exert my opinion on someone else, only to convey my argument in an intelligent manner!. Please do not take offense to what I have said, but please do give it some thought!. Remember that we must all start somewhere and remember that each choice you make counts!. There are consequences for every action we make!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No!. The percentage will be very close to what it is now!. The amount of vegetarians is undoubtedly increasing but it's still only in line with the increase of the population on the whole!. So as the amount of vegers increases, so does the amount of meaters!.

It seems farfetched but if the lab-grown meat actually works out and catches on, there may actually be a lower % of vegers as the one's who are vegetarians for ethics reasons start eating "meat" again!.

Then again who knows!? 50 years is a long time these days!. Look at all of the changes in the last 50 years!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I agree with Kim!.!.!.!.!.we may not have a choice!. With the increasing world population we're testing the limits of food supply as it is!. Can you say Soylent Green!?!?

Okay, but seriously!.!.!.!.!.in some countries being vegetarian is the norm, not the exception, so I think certain areas of the world would be more open to changing their dietary needs!. In the US for example it would take an HUGE food shortage to make people consider vegetarianism on a widespread basis!. I don't think this will happen in 50 years, but if the population continues to grow like it has I would assume that in a century or two vegetarianism will be close to majority levels!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it's a nice thought!. and i can see how it might help, not solve, but help with some of today's problems!. unfortunately, i don't see it happening!. i would expect the numbers to stay relatively close to what they are now!. they may increase a little, but 50% of the population seems like a strech!.

top cat: "meat must make you dumber than a box of rocks"!? you complain about the way many vegetarians are veiwed by meat eaters and then say things like this!? these are the kind of 'holier than thou' comments that people are talking about when they talk about vegetarians!. keep calling meat eaters stupid and you're definately not going to help your cause!. when you make comments like this, you only lower the views meat eaters have of you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If we keep discovering problems with consuming meat and dairy products the way we have been recently, then it shouldn't even take that long!. Fifty years ago people did a whole lot of things that we now know is very harmful to our health, just look at how the cigarette industry has changed!. Fifty years ago, people were encouraged to smoke via t!.v!. commercials, magazine ads, etc!. Now, we know it causes cancers and many other things, Fifty years ago we didn't know the dangers of many things from asbestos to giving aspirin to children!. Live and learn!. If you learn that something is not healthy for you and causes many health problems, why in God's name would you continously fight for the right to give yourself cancer!? *Sigh* You'd think people would be smarter that, wouldn't you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

We can only hope so!.

Edit: To Reducto!.!.!. thank you! You've just verified how much of a fuckw*t you are!. It's people like you that give me the urge to turn cannibal!. Lions hunt other animals for a food source - where as humans "hunt" for "fun" and seem to call this a "sport"!. This is inhumane and cruel towards the treatment of animals!. Is that what you promote!? Animal slaughter, violence, cruelty and generalisation!? You might as well go and join Hitler!.

If you want to get all technical!.!.!. then humans, in science and biology, are actually considered animals too!. So what if we started farming little baby toddlers - hunting them for fun, caging them up, speeding up their growth and fattening them up so we can slaughter them and eat them!. Would that be right too!?

There is a big difference between lions and humans, lions are carnivores and humans are omnivores!. We have a choice to eat either plants or meat or both!. They don't have a choice and don't understand how it all works, they just get an urge in their stomach, that growling hungry pain and this results in hunting their prey!.

What humans do to cows for meat is NOT synonymous with the hunting technique of a lion or tiger, and if you beg to differ - you are seriously narrow minded and need some educating! Grow up!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think it really could happen!. Fifty years is a long time, people are slowly becoming more aware of how the animals are treated, how meat is not real good for us and the affect it has on the enviorment!. also the lab grown meat may very well work out and there could be a hell of a lot less animals suffering just for peoples tastebuds which also could be a very good thing that could happen!. Gotta have hope:)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well it's becoming easier to become a vegetarian with all the new products nowadays!. Who knows how it will be like in 50 years!? But meat is naturally delicious if it's cooked right!. People will keep feeding their kids meat so the kids learn to love it, then the kids' children will love it and so on!. But really, who knows!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

80% of the world's population is all ready vegetarian!. For some that is the only food that they can find or afford, for others it is a choice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If the world population keeps growing at its current rate many will be forced to eat a vegetarian diet!. The price of meat will be to high for most to buy, with the exception of holidays etc!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Think global warming is bad now!? Wait till half the world's population are eating beans everyday!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is very possible!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

yes i do!. humans eating other species flesh is really for lack of better terms "behind the times"Www@FoodAQ@Com

I wish Veggies are great

GO VEG
hello to animal lovers out there thanks for your choiceWww@FoodAQ@Com

i wish it to be, but feel may not beWww@FoodAQ@Com

Never happen it takes twice the weight of veggies to get the same amount of protein!.!.!.IE it takes 2 pounds of veggies to equal one pound of red meat!.
also to note there are more people with allergies to veggies than there are people who are allergic to meat!.
Last but not least what are you going to do with all the animals not being used for food!.!.!.let them starve just so you can eat tofu!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

No!. If eating meat is so wrong then what about the lions!? Are you gonna teach them to live off plants!?
If its ok for lions and other wild animals to eat meat, why not humans!?
BTW, i certainly hope you dont have any dogs or cats-what on earth would you feed them!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!. Because If You See Those Cannibals Movies!. It Makes Meat Look Disgusting!. Plus, People Are Eating A lot Of Meat!. Fish Is Way Better Like Sushi, Salmon!. I Like Veges!. also Because People Are Hunting And Animals Are Becoming Extinct!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i hope to god not!.
