Why did you choose to become a vegetarian/vegan?!
Why did you choose to become a vegetarian or a vegan!?
Was it a life switch, a moment you had, something you watched or health reasons!?
This is directed at people who are vegetarians/vegans, so if you have different eating habits: Feel free to answer the other question I posted here:

I always had a strong connection with animals, my first memory is of my sick dog Spot being taken away to be put down as I sat crying in his dog box!. I was about two years old!. I grew up in a small town and believed what my parents told me, the animals were treated well and they killed them without pain or the animals knowledge they were going to be killed!. When I moved away and got a job I would pass a cow farm and I would see the cows playing with each other in the field, cow meat started to not taste as good!. And then one day I stopped at a Rallys and got a hamburger, a little down the road I was stopped at a stop light eating and in front of me was a trailer that had two cows (an adult and a calf), they were staring at me!. I stared back and looked at my sandwich and threw it back in the bag!. I haven't had cow meat since!. Not too long after that a guy I knew went to work at a pig farm, he came over to my house the same day he worked there and said that the people in there picked up the baby pigs, chopped off their "nuts" and threw them across the room!. He quit immediatley upon seeing that!. I haven't had pig meat since!. I still ate chicken and turkey, I didn't know about factory farms for a few years and still thought that they came from the small farms I had been seeing my whole life where they run around in the yard all day happily!. I started doing research on the net about becoming vegetarian and ran into a veggie forum where I found out about factory farms!. I decided to give Meat Your Meat a shot and saw what is happening to the chickens and the turkeys, I barely made it through and when I saw a man doing something to a cow I immediatley shut it off and ran to the bathroom and vommited!. I gave up the other meats after that!. I never did like seafood so that wasn't a problem at all!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I was veg for 1!.5 or 2 years before I became vegan!. I became vegan while studying the environmental impact of agri-business!. I realized how ecologically unsustainable a large scale omnivorous diet is to sustain globally!. Producing meat places massive stresses on the earth's resources and the environment!. I study environmental engineering and majoring in agricultural waste management!. That along with the obvious ethical concerns about animal treatment are the main reasons I decided to become vegan!. Some of my other reasons:
1!. Cruelty to Animals
2!. Health
3!. World Hunger
4!. Worker Rights
5!. Government Negligence
6!. The environment
also reading some books by Peter Singer about ethics really changed my perspective!.

Im 24, i stopped eating red meat and chicken, eggs, when i was 12!.
My mum and both sisters are vegetarian but i dont believe that was an influence for me as there was no pressure!.
It wasnt for health reasons or anything it was basically that i just didnt like the thought of eating animals , im a great animal lover and the thought of eating and killing them made me feel sick and not right still does!.
it still really upsetts me the thought of it but i happily cook meat for my fiance as he is a meat eater and i have nothing against anyone who eats meat its everyones right to choose
I was 12 and i was watching a movie a chicken got killed and as far as i can remember that may have been the reason decided to stop, although i cant remember well as it was years ago now
Im glad of the health benefits that not eating meat give me also although iv only thought of that as i got older that didnt occur to me years ago, i feel healthy i have great Iron levels etc and have never had a problem, i have so much fun cooking food and my man loves my vegie cooking, he hardly eats meat much anyone as he feels he doesnt need to eat it everyday all the time sort of thing
I love animals , i love being Vegie and im happy!. i couldnt ever go back to eating meat
One day years back i brought a vegie pastrie ate it and then realised they had given me the meat one half way through i was sick for the next day the thought of it
Not nice :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

At first I was a vegetarian- for about 5 years!. Then I got to thinking: which is more cruel, to lead a steer to slaughter that lasts 6 seconds!. or to cage egg hens, 6 or 7 to a cage and make them live that way for 3 or 4 years!? Or keeping cows constantly pregnant in order to get their milk, and sending their male offspring to be veal!? Milk cows suffer from debilitating diseases of the udder because their milk production is so high!. They last about 5 years!.
Obviously, keeping animals alive and suffering was worse than outright killing!. So I gave up eggs and dairy 12 years ago, and don't miss a thing!. I contribute to no murder or suffering, which is important to a Buddhist!.
I am an ethical vegan, which means I am vegan for the animals, not health!. I use no animal products, no leather, no honey, don't buy from companies that test on animals!. I am 54 years old, my bp is 120/76, cholesterol 98, full-time student and shelter worker!.
My conscience is clear!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Good question!. I went vegetarian initially because I watched a video at school when I was 8!. Mum says that ever since then, I went off meat!. I've not ate meat for 11 years and I don't miss it at all!. Later when I got older, I realised the whole animal rights issue is important!. I do feel healthy as a veggie!. I guess I felt relief at knowing that my body doesn't need meat for good health!. (However, vegetarianism is not for everybody, as I have come to accept)!.
Recently it was some lovely members of this Forum that helped me make the transition to vegan!. I can't thank them enough!. Last time I drank milk!? Ages ago! My diet has consisted of fruit, veg, seeds, nuts, pulses, dairy free alternatives and wholegrains and I'm happy with it!.
My friends were against me going vegan, but I hope to dispell their fears by being a good example!.
Thanks for letting me share this with you :)
Peace ^_^

I am gonna go vegetarian!. I am 11 and my grandma is buddhist (im christian) she is vegetarian!. I am doing a prodject on animal abuse and doing that has changed my perspective on eating meat!. I am becoming a vegetarian because i think killing animals for their bodies is horrible! I think it is like killing your pet dog!. Dogs are loved by many people i think cows and chickens should be treated like animals with MINDS as well as bodies!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I'm not a vegetarian, but for the past year i've been considering cutting out meat because it gives me so many stomach aches and makes me feel sick and grossed out!. There could be a million and one reasons why people become vegan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I care about animals!. I just think its cruel to kill animals for food when we have other ways of providing for ourselves!. also, I saw some videos on peta and peta2 and after that, meat started making me sick to my stomach when i started to eat it!. So I had to stop!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
