Answers:
I guess everyone sets their own bar for what they want to eat and what they regard ethical, and it's all socially constructed!. For some they draw the line at only certain types of animals, some draw the line at all animals, some don't even have a line!.

I don't eat meat, period; BUT I am well aware of the fact that the only reason I don't is because of how much thought I put into what I eat and how much emotion I attach to animals and food!. I've always loved animals and still do, all of them!. And once I started looking into the environmental aspects of factory farming, things just added up for me!.

What is acceptable and unacceptable to eat differs from society to society, since human beings are are essentially animals, the only thing that makes us determine what is okay to eat and what isn't are elaborately created societal rules and regulations!. That's why in the USA it's okay to eat cows but in other countries cows are revered and you would be ostracized if you ate one!. That's why in some countries, cats and dogs are seen with indifference, like rats in the street, and people eat them without a problem!.

However, since you (and I) live in a society where the social norm would be NOT to eat cats and dogs, people might consider your question crazy!. But as I said, it's all socially constructed!. People also keep pot bellied pigs or chickens and treat them like pets rather than food, just like cats and dogs!. Typically someone wouldn't kill an animal they share a friendship with because at that point they realize that animal is it's own being, has it's own life, is sentient!. They have a range of emotions!. My aunt stopped eating pork when she got a pot bellied pig, it's really clever, it can turn on the TV and sits and watches the picture screen and hides the remote so she can't turn it off again!. LOL!.

It's probably a lot easier to eat meat, regardless what it is, if you never really interacted with it, if it's just an anonymous lump of meat on a styrofoam tray!.

But once again, despite it all we're just a part of nature, and since we have such big brains we can over-think our positions in society and create reasons when it is acceptable and when it isn't acceptable to kill and eat an animal, or to do any other behavior!. No other animal takes such great consideration for the food they eat!. You hear about it all the time where some old lady dies and her cats start to eat her body before the police do a wellbeing check, or where an animal will even eat it's young!.

So really there is no difference if you take all the moral and ethical implications that human beings create!. Personally I am very thankful those ethical and moral implications exist, however, despite how hypocritical many of them are!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Pets are a cultural and regional affair!. In India, they hold cows sacred, in China, they eat dogs, and in America, we eat cows, chickens, and pigs!. I don't eat my dog it isn't exactly my favorite dish!. However, if everybody raised pigs as pets in America, I wouldn't even think twice of eating my pet pig!.

You see!? It's a cultural thing!. Every society and cultural sets certain standards concerning which animals they respect and which animals they eat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I wouldn't eat a dog because it's a carnivore and it would taste gross!. Other cultures eat dogs, horses, monkeys, etc!. That's cool by me!. I have eaten bunny, though!. The idea was weird at first because normally bunnies are pets, but they're food, too!. It's pretty good!.
I had pets and grew up on a farm!. I love companion animals, but they're still animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Animals feel!.
They can get scared, lonely, or mad, like us!
My dog is my family!.
She is my baby, and my mom and dad are her grandparents!.
My sisters are her aunts, and my brother is her uncle!.
She is part of the family!.

Those people that say animals don't feel!.!.!.
They're wrong!.
They don't know, they don't have any true feelings for animals!.
I wouldn't eat my dog, even if I was starving!.
She is my adopted daughter that I adore!.

Unfortunately for them, only herbivores are eaten!. Think about it!.!. even in the animal world the carnivores eat the herbivores
Now there are people that don't stop anywhere, but I won't even go there!. So, your dog is off the table (and so should be all the herbivores)Www@FoodAQ@Com

most people view pets in almost human ways although they are wrong pets have some similarties but are not humans!. while people dont see those animals theyre eating every day they dont know there talents flaws and behavior thats why they dont see it to be wrong!. if they researched how amazing the animals they eat are they might realize there not worth eating

- hope this helpsWww@FoodAQ@Com

it`s different to eat a cow a chicken or a pig than it is your pet!.!.!.!. and in china they eat snoopy!.!.!. why do you bother to push your religious ways on to other people!.!. do we condemn you for killing the ozone layer by eating our trees!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not really sure, but I think it is because the meat that household pets have doesn't have the vitamins or minerals that cow meat would!. I'm young, so I'm not to sure!Www@FoodAQ@Com

If it came down to me starving!.!.!.my Schnauzer, no!. I would eat the neighbor's dog, though!. When the SHTF, you'll eat roaches, and be thankful!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am part native american, so this is my view on the whole "eating animals" thing!.

I think why people don't eat dogs is because they have other uses besides being eaten!. They are companions, they are guard dogs, and they can provide us with services (such as police dogs and such) Humans that eat meat don't eat animals that have other uses--another example!? Horses!. Mules!. Cats!. I think that may be a lot of people's thinking!.

Another fact to consider!.!.!.the cow you get your milk from is *not* the same cow you would eat!. We had a dairy cow, and took care of it until the day it died--The same with our chickens!. They laid eggs, and we took care of them--keeping them in our coop at night protected them from foxes and such!. Happy chickens produce better eggs too :)

When I was a young girl, I was taught to respect and care for animals, and only kill when you needed to!. We went deer hunting every fall, and it helped to regulate the deer population in our area (which if they got out of control, they would eat our crops)!. We would use every part of the deer (even the hooves and horns), and never shoot a doe!. Every once in a while we would buy a pig or a quarter cow from the local butcher, which I still do to this day!. I know the butcher and the animals are put down very humanely!. Death is a part of life, and we should learn to accept it!.

Being a vegetarian is a choice and I respect it!. But my culture taught me to respect animals and only take what you need!. It is sad that meat consumption is so commercialized, which in my opinion, ruins everything!.

I hope this doesn't offend--you asked, I answered!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
