Answers:
A nutritionist at University told me that the most effective way to boost iron intake is to take a good quality supplement!.

According to 'Nutrition For Dummies' [2006], the iron that is added to breakfast cereals is easier for the body to absorb than from other vegetarian sources!.

I personally get my iron from fortified breakfast cereals and wholegrains!.

Best wishes!.

[edit] If you live in the UK, a blood test should be free on the National Health Service (NHS)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Dark leafy green vegetables are high in iron!. Be sure to also eat vitamin C when you eat iron-rich foods to facilitate absorption!. Blueberries are an excellent source as well, as they contain both iron and vitamin C!.

On the day you donate blood, you'll be screened for anemia with a fingerprick blood test!. Don't worry - you won't be permitted to make a donation if you're anemic!.

I'd also like to tell you that it's great of you to donate blood!

Best of luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Green Leafy veggies are not that great source of iron, it's not in a form that permits easy absorption (but still eat it, it has nutrients and fiber), but NOT for iron

Exercise (when I began to exercise, my blood donations got way easier to deal with)
Beans are a wonderful source of iron
Supplements are good, take them about 2-3 weeks before you donate!.!.!.trust me, the finger prick is the worst part of blood donation, and you'd hate to do it twice

Blood test done on the day, but I've notice that whether or not I'm allowed to donate depends on the test!. When it was a matter of sink/float, I was able to donate, but when they analyzed w/ a machine the amount of iron in my blood, I wasn't allowed!.

Thanks for donating blood! also, make sure that the place you're donating have veg friendly sugar replacers!. When I donated through my university, they gave us cookies, which I couldn't eat, but at the red cross, they had other stuff that I could eat!.!.!.so plan ahead

ETA: if you fail, they'll give you a sheet of iron rich foods, so if you want to know, you can get the sheet from then in advanceWww@FoodAQ@Com

Cashews, almonds, and raisins are good snack foods that will help your iron levels!.

I am a vegan and I donate on a regular basis!. They normally have to spin my blood (I know, TMI), but I usually make it w/o having to take the iron pills!. Just make sure that you eat TONS of the above foods for a week prior to your donation!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You can enrich the iron in your diet with dark leafy greens, such as spinach or broccoli!. In addition, eat lots of beans and lentils!. Tofu has lots of iron too!

If you think your iron levels are too low, get a simple blood test from your doctor!. While you're there you can get advice on donating blood!.

I'm a vegetarian and I donate blood!. When you donate blood they test it for iron content and tell you if your low!. I've never been low!. People, both meat eaters and veggies, have problems with iron deficiency because they aren't eating a ballanced diet, or they are eating to much junk food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

One of the easiest ways to ensure proper iron intake and absorption is to start the day with a bowl of instant oatmeal and a glass of orange juice!.
