Vegans: If pesticides are used to grow a particular crop, and you eat that produce.....?!
!.!.!.!.are you concerned about all the bugs that died so that you could eat that produce!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
Good question!. Many vegans try to buy from small farms where they know something about how the crops are grown or harvested, or they grow their own!.
Crop care isn't just a question of bugs!. When large farms dust crops or harvest them, millions of other animals are slaughtered, for instance birds, squirrels, rabbits, frogs, lizards!.
It's next to impossible to live on this planet without harming some life form!. I'm a vegan by choice, and I don't like to preach to others who aren't vegan, but I will answer questions about it when asked!. If you are living in the US and buying from most grocery stores, there is no telling where the produce came from since so much is imported from all over!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no not all vegans buy only organic produce!.
bugs are going to die in any manufacturing process of produce, wheat, oats, etc!. even without the use of pesticides!. wheat reapers kill millions of bugs i am sure!. it's too bad, we are aware of it, and there isn't much one can do it!. we have to eat!.
i think for many people becoming vegan is an effort to reduce suffering!. the fact that insects do not feel pain or pleasure; have very poorly developed neural systems and have very limited consciousness (if at all, depending on how you define consciousness) is one way of understanding that although these insects lose their lives in the process affects the sort of cost/benefit analysis of a vegan diet!. clearly, if you eat meat, you are supporting an industry that undeniably causes billions upon billions of animals each year to suffer (10 billion killed in the U!.S!. every year alone)!. billions and billions of insects will die too, but they will not suffer!.
this is not to say that i go along killing insects willy-nilly because whenever they react as if they are in pain (if you pull a leg off an ant it will act like something happened, but this is only nerve stimulus- notice how the bodies of ants can "live" for a few days without their heads) i still think they deserve some consideration because they are at the very least, very interesting creatures and they are still world-building (look how intricate and lovely the spider's web is)!. but i also know i have to eat, and it is some consolation that the insects that die in the process are able to regenerate rather quickly and painlessly (insects outnumber humans something like 10 billion to one)!.
i also drive a car and hit bugs when i ride my bike!. sad fact of life!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I try to eat organic as much as possible, but more for my own health than the welfare of the bugs!. Insects are going to be killed by the process of growing and harvesting crops regardless of pesticides!. It's just part of life!. I didn't become vegan so no animal would ever die again; I did it because I want to minimize animal suffering!. As a meat eater, I'd be responsible for even more insect deaths; all of the crops grown for me to eat produce AND all the crops grown to feed the animals I'd be eating would involve insect deaths!. We are humans and we have to eat so we can't completely eliminate death!. We do what we can!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
A vegan and an organic diet are not the same thing!. Vegans can have an organic diet or not!. Similarly omnivores can have an organic diet too!.
An organic diet is a diet free of pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics and genetically modified foods!. Organic meat is produced by only feeding the animal organic feed!. Organic food must meet stringent requirements before it can be labeled organic!.
It would be nice to only eat organic!. But as you said it is generally more expensive that current farming methods!. It is however a healthier alternative and many swear that organic food also tastes better!.
If you can afford it or grow your own veggies that's great!.!.!. go for it =0)Www@FoodAQ@Com

The definition of veganism as per the Vegan Society is this:
"The word "veganism" denotes a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude — as far as is possible and practical — all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment!. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals!."
Note the words "as far as is possible and practical!." Sure I'm concerned about the lives of all living creatures, and so I'm vegan and I do the best I can!. Yeah, bugs and some small animals are going to be harmed in the production and harvesting of plant-foods, but at least I'm making every effort I can to reduce that suffering!. When I own a home with adequate property space to grow my own vegetables, I'll be doing even more to reduce unnnecessary harm to animals!.
In terms of organics, I choose organic foods as often as is feasable because it's a sustainable method of food-growing, and it's less damaging to the planet!. It's not that expensive to buy and eat organic when you base your diet on whole foods rather than processed foods!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

well, im vegetarian, not vegan and i dont know, i never really thought about bugs!. There are plenty of bugs to go around!. I step on roaches too, and they better get the hell out of my house!!!
i never kill bugs for pleasure, i respect them and if they belong outside, i just take them outside, but i dont go any further into protecting bugs!.
and i try to eat organic, but it is way too expensive for us, especially how prices are going up on produce!.we stopped eating organic about 3months ago!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If bugs are doing harm they need to be controlled!. Even organic farming methods kills bugs!. Some veggies also kill bugs, a good example is the hot pepper!.
BTW: I try to do all organic, because I don't want to fill my body with all the cemicals used in non organic farming!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
