Vegetarian Questions?!


Question: Vegetarian Questions!?
I've been putting a lot of thought into becoming a vegetarian (I actually quit eating actual meat a few days ago: I never ate seafood/shellfish/pork to begin with due to the way I was raised); however, I still have a few questions:

Food costs:
I have a 9mo!. year old daughter, so I'm on a $40 a week food budget!. Is this pheasable pr should I set aside more money!?

Milk/Egg based products (I still haven't cut this out):
Do vegetarians eat/drink food/milk based products!?
Are all egg-replacers/soy milk products vegetarian, or should I be looking for specific brands!?Www@FoodAQ@Com


Answers:
Not all vegetarians consume milk and milk products!. I personally have just swapped milk and its products for dairy free alternatives!. ''Swap'' rather than ''Cut out''!. :)
Ovo= eggs
Lacto= milk, dairy
Ovo lacto vegetarians eat both eggs and dairy!.
Lacto vegetarians eat dairy products, NO eggs!.

EnerG egg Replacer is vegan!. You can buy it from a reputable health foods store!.

Most soya milks are vegan, but read the label carefully!.
Alpro Soya is undoubtedly the best brand of soya milk I know of for quality & taste, it really stands out from the crowd!. Silk is another good brand!.

About the budget issue, I think health is top priority!. So do your best with what you can afford!. Wherever possible, buy organic if you can!. (May I add, I think it's great that you are doing intelligent research before going vegetarian)!.

Hi, As a vegetarian you will still be able to consume milk and products containing milk, also you can have eggs in your diet!.

I think you will be able to eat quite healthily and substantially on your budget!.
The best way is to make your meals from fresh, and buy and soak your own beans/lentils for cooking, these are also healthier as they don't have the plumping agent that tinned pulses do and is so much cheaper!
I also find cooking a larger batch of recipes and then freezing some, helps on a budget!.

I am on a 30 dollar a week budget for myself and my meat eating boyfriend!. I am still eating milk products and using milk (although I have cut my intake in half) and I still eat eggs (usually from a small farm I know if they have any)!. I don't know anything about egg-replacers but Silk soymilk and Rice Dreams rice milk are good brands that are vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't know about the US budget for food!. But i do know that if you are able to cook from basic vegetables rather than buying processed foods you will find it a cheaper option!.

I suspect food in the USA is cheaper than the UK, i think it would be fairly impossible to live of $40 ( or $30 ) food in the UK!. £15 a week for 2 people, hats off to Lady Rea, that just goes to show what can be done!.

I believe ( but only from what i've heard ) that things such as vegetarian sausages and burgers are more expensive that meat -but they are not essential and you can make them from soya mince if you want cheaper versions ( and they taste nicer than bought ones )

many vegetarians eat dairy and eggs, its your choice!. Perhaps you can look at buying freerange eggs, but i realise they are more expensive than battery eggs!. Eggs from a "hobby farm" might be cheaper!.
