What made you want to be a vegetarian?!

Question: What made you want to be a vegetarian!?
I saw a video put out by PETA last night and it really freaked me out seeing the animals and the way they are treated and slaughtered!. OMG!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sadly enough, that video is not the exception - it is the norm!. Animals have the right to live, to seek happiness, to enjoy bearing, nurturing and protecting their young!. The young have the right to be with their parents!. We should never take that away from them just because we are stronger!. It is sad that might is right!. It has been the way of the world; the strong defeat the weak and helpless, even though what they do may not be ethical!. When I show the PETA video to my meat-eating friends, they cannot watch it all the way through!. Since I became vegetarian, then vegan, I have lost excess weight, my breath smells good, and I feel better about myself!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, what do you think happens to animals between birth and the supermarket!? As someone once said, do you think they're tickled to death!?

Actually, the animal rights stuff never phased me much!. Around eight years ago, I went to an animal rights event with my friend, but nothing there shocked me!. I think I always knew animals were suffering!.

What actually made me go vegetarian were the health arguments!. I had always had terrible hereditary stomach problems that landed me in the hospital more times than I care to remember!. Someone at the animal rights event was talking about how meat stays in your system so long and causes lots of problems!.

That's when I decided to try tofu!. I figure, if I can tolerate tofu instead of eating chicken at an Asian restaurant, then I can go vegetarian!. I liked the tofu and made the switch shortly thereafter!.

That was seven years ago, and I never looked back!. I've discovered all kinds of new foods and cuisines that don't use meat, and best of all, my stomach problems have practically disappeared!. Yes, I became vegetarian for self-centered reasons, but I also feel good knowing that I contribute to considerably less animal suffering these days as well!.

Like they say in that campaign to get people out to vote, any reason is every reason!. Go vegetarian for yourself, for the animals, for the environment,!.!.!. Heck, even because the cost of meat (and everything else) is going up so much!. Any reason that works for you, works!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I worked many years in nursing homes and saw the end results of the typical American meat eater diet!. People in their 40's and 50's with strokes, Alzheimer's, diabetic complications, etc!.

I also worked 1 year at a 7th Day Adventist Assisted Living Center with wonderful healthy people who where in their 80's and 90's and life long vegetarian!. This was a very large 5 story complex, but there where only 19 beds for those who needed full care and they where seldom full!.

As a nurses aid in these places all of that information kept rolling around in my head!.

The Alzheimer people were heavy meat eaters all their lives!.That and their other health problems that I could clearly see from working in the two very different "cultures" so to speak, was more than enough evidence for me to realize that the typical American diet is killing America!.

my husband and I both grew up on farms and are vegetarian and 7th Day Adventist!. God gave us dietary laws to follow of clean and unclean!. Eating of the unclean has really made many people sick!.

the commercial meat industry is a tragedy that needs to be stopped!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

my reasons were ethical and religious!.
first, i don't want to know that something went through a horrible life and died painfully just to appease my taste buds!. i felt it was selfish and wrong to continue eating meat after i realized the way the meat industry works!.
i am also a Christian and with all of the things i believe about my God i find it hard to believe that his intention was for animals to suffer!. i just can't imagine a compassionate, loving God looking down on the world and thinking, "i am so glad that my creations are being treated in this cruel manner!." God said "thou shalt not kill" and I intend to abide by that as much as possible!. i don't take the Bible literally, but I do believe that the greatest messages in it were of love and compassion to all things, and being a vegetarian is a great way to follow those beliefs!. Christians are not the only ones to promote these beliefs!.!.!.!.almost every religion in the world promotes nonviolence, compassion, and love!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

when i went to my village, i was first a non veg girl!. my momdad took me to my village and a goat was to be cut in pieces for dinner!. the goat was very friendly!. i played with it all day and when night came, the goat's neck was cut just in front of my eyes and actually tears ran down from my eyes! and i just told my mother,"mom, im not gonna eat the flesh of that innocent animal" that incident changed my life and since then i am a perfect veg and i support PETA!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I had Nutrition last semester and learned some of these statistics:

Number of people worldwide who will die as a result of malnutrition this year: 20 million
Number of people who could be adequately fed using land freed if Americans reduced their intake of meat by 10%: 100 million

Cause of global warming: greenhouse effect
Primary cause of greenhouse effect: carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels
Fossil fuels needed to produce meat-centered diet vs!. a meat-free diet: 3 times more
Percentage of U!.S!. topsoil lost to date: 75
Percentage of U!.S!. topsoil loss directly related to livestock raising: 85

Gallons of water needed to produce a pound of wheat: 25
Gallons of water needed to produce a pound of California beef: 5,000

Years the world's known oil reserves would last if every human ate a meat-centered diet: 13
Years they would last if human beings no longer ate meat: 260

I read those and went home and did lots of research on the internet, read articles and watched videos!. After determining that I could eat a healthy vegetarian diet I made the switch!.

Our overconsumption of meat leads to the destruction of our resources and by stopping it we could save our earth and save lives!. I think that eating meat is selfish!. And I would never say that to a meat-eater in person but I feel comfortable saying it here!. I try not to preach my beliefs on the matter, no matter how many people tell me that I'm an idiot and that just little ol' me cutting out meat won't do anything!. Animal slaughter, plain and simple, for any purpose is wrong!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Personally I hate the taste and texture of meat!. I have never liked meat, so why eat something you think tastes gross!?

You have to think about the animals too!. There's a lot of suffering in the meat industry!. The meat industry puts much strain on the environment too (For example, rainforests are cut down so Fast Food Chains can buy the land for cattle)!.

So, to summarise, the key reasons are

1!. Animals
2!. Environment
3!. Health

Vegetarianism, for many people, has excellent health benefits!.

Despite these issues, it is best to eat what you like, nobody is stopping you!. :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I was never really a fan of meat except chicken!. I would rarely eat any pork or beef and I was a bit overweight and wanted to loose weight and be healthy!. Since I am thanatophobic, I want to find ways to live longer and cutting meat from my life makes me live 10+ years!. also the ways animals are killed is very disgusting and scary, plus! Meat is the number 1 problem for climate change!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm a vegetarian for a combination of reasons: health, ethics, and religion!.

Yes- those videos are hard to watch!. Unfortunately, that is the miserable life and death that the animals face!.!.!.that's why I refuse to allow my hard-earned money to perpetuate that atrocity!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I grew up as a vegan so I've never had the desire to eat meat!. But I know some of my friends that are vegetarians chose that way of life because of one of two reasons, health reasons or caring for animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A Philosophy of Morality course, sophomore year in college!. There is simply no defense for a system that causes so much destruction for so little purpose!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I watched a film called "Earthlings!." That was more than enough for me!. I've been vegan ever since!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
