Answers:
Some radicals are against having pets at all!. PeTA, for instance, doesn't want anyone to have pets!. Personally, if you treat your horses (or pets) well and keep them healthy, give them check-ups when needed, etc!., I think having pets are fine!. Just as long as the animals aren't tortured/tormented/teased!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am not against having horses and riding them as long as they are in a good home, are well taken care of, are loved and happy!. I AM against competitive sports involving horses because I have seen many abuse cases where after a horse stops winning or performing good they are given away and put in a bad home where they are neglected and even abused!. also, owners who take part in such sports are mean to the horses and make them perform when they don't want to and they push them too hard!. They don't want the horses for the love and companionship they can give, they want them so they can win money!. The horses are exploited by the owners, and the horses deserve much better than that, they deserve to be happy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think looking at horses cantering around in a buttercup filled field by itself and you would think there was nothing wrong with owning horses!.

I think once you look at the whole stud farm / commercial breeding industry it might reveal some aspects of horse rearing that vegans might not be comfortable with!.

Vegans are generally against the exploitation of animals!. I would say exploitation includes putting down weaker/smaller/slightly lame/not-so-cute animals just to get a higher price for the remaining stock!.

The same is true of any pet bought on a commercial basis!.

Don't buy pets on a whim, research how it was bred and what the breeder does with below-par offspring!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans oppose "ownership" of any animal!.

For instance, my husband and I adopted a cat 2 years ago, but I don't see myself as his owner any more than I would own my child!. I am his steward and guardian!. My cat is in my care, but he's not my posession!.

I believe that rescuing an animal from what would otherwise be an uncaring/exploitative situation is in accordance with veganism when the rescuer has the means and intention to provide for that animal's needs!. For example, my husband and I plan to own an acreage with land enough to create a farm animal sanctuary - if we have the opportunity to rescue or adopt a retired or unwanted horse, we will!.

Where horses are concerned, I don't believe "owning" or riding them is in accordance with veganism!. I believe it's exoploitative and abusive!.

That's just MHO!. :-)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've asked myself this question a few times before!. As long as you aren't abusing the animal, using vegan tack, and not using spurs or whips, I don't see a huge problem with it!. Some horses even like being ridden!. My biggest concern would be when people cross the line from treating the horse with kindness and caring about it to treating it like it's a disposable thing and its only purpose is doing what the owner wants it to do!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not vegan, but I'm vegitarian and I have two horses that I rescued and I'm training them!. I would never buy a horse from a breeder and I don't use whips or spurs at all, I ride them without a bit whenever I can!. They like being riden so I don't think its a problem as long as we take good care of them and treat them fairlyWww@FoodAQ@Com

well im not a vegan but my opinion is that Im not a huge fan of the whips and that they have those things in their mouths>! Im not sure if it really hurts(the thing in the mouth) Im still eductateing myself on the whole thing so yeah!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have been a vegan for more than 2 years and im not against owning a horse if you treat him right and give him enough space to live freely!. But i dont think you should ride them at all!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
