Why be vegeterian? Are they full of it?!

Question: Why be vegeterian!? Are they full of it!?
Why do some people wish to be vegeterian!? They state the reason as "animals are brutally slaughtered"!. However, if the animals like a cow is died of a heart failure without pain, would those "honourable" vegeterian try to consume meat!?

They wouldn't! Even a plant is a living thing so are they full of it!?! I believe they are!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Yes, of course they are full of it! They talk about loving animals blah blah blah, but a living thing is still a living thing! If a cow died by a gun shot, painless kill , would they eat it!? NO!Www@FoodAQ@Com

There is also the socio-economic side of the coin!.!.!.

According to a 2006 United Nations initiative, the livestock industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food contributes on a "massive scale" to air and water pollution, land degradation, climate change, and loss of biodiversity!. The initiative concluded that "the livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global!."[2]

Animals fed on grain and those which rely on grazing need more water than grain crops!.[3] In tracking food animal production from the feed through to the dinner table, the inefficiencies of meat, milk and egg production range from a 4:1 energy input to protein output ratio up to 54:1!.[4] The result is that producing animal-based food is typically much less efficient than the harvesting of grains, vegetables, legumes, seeds and fruits, though this might not be largely true for animal husbandry in the developing world where factory farming is almost non existent, making animal based food much more sustainable!.

Or maybe, like me, some people just don't care for the taste of meat and are concerned about contamination!. also, I find that vegetables are much easier to prepare and more pleasant to eat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you think man is a carnivorous animal, then do what carnivorous animals do! Go out and catch an animal, wild or domestic, kill it with your hands, remove it's flesh with your hands, and then eat it, don't cook it, just eat it!. Or at least go to your local food store and buy a raw chicken or pork roast, bring it home, and eat it, don't cook it just eat it!
If you look at the digestive system of carnivores and herbivores, the carnivore has a short intestinal track to get rid of the meat from it's system so the meat doesn't rot and poison it!. A plant eating animal has a long intestinal track to allow the system to extract all of the nutrition from the plants, man has a long intestinal tract!. But yes, we have adapted to eating meats through cooking!. But you still hear of all the medical problems meat eating people have, heart problems, cholesterol, food poisoning, etc!. Vegetarians have less health problems and live longer!. That's just a fact!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I was raised in a culture where vegetarianism is the norm and eating meat is considered wrong and immoral!. So I can't imagine eating meat!.

The problem does not lie with animals dying of natural causes!. The problem is that animals are factory-bred and raised to be killed!. They are kept in horrifying conditions, they are slaughtered in front of their mothers, and they are pumped with steroids and hormones!. That is just pure cruelty!.

Plants don't have brains, feelings, or a soul!. And neither do you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

how do u know they wouldnt!? not ALL vegetarians are just against the killing, sometimes its purely for dietry reasons and sometimes its because of the cruel treatment of animals!. im sure some vegetarians would eat meat if it died naturally, but a lot wouldnt because they dont want meat in their body!. If you've got a problem with people not wanting to put **** in their body then you seriously need to try and get over it as it does not affect you or anyone else in a negative way!.

grow up and stop making assumptions!. maybe you should have asked 'if an animal died naturally, would you vegetarians eat it!?'

and as for plants being living things, i dont hear them screaming when you pull them from the roots do you!? and even if they did, you do not need animals to survive!. everyone has a right to protect their lives so if plants had real feelings i would still eat them!.

if you want to eat meat go ahead nobodies stopping you!. vegetarians have a different opinion to you - get over it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A cow that died of heart failure would NOT be commercially butchered!.

also, the process of "raising beef" is extremely bad for the environment!. All the excess cow poo gets washed into the rivers and lakes which many people get their drinking water from! That's why there's an algae bloom a couple times a year!.

Not only that, but meat has lots of BAD cholesterol in it!. Not to mention hormones and other crap!. Did you know it now takes chickens HALF the time it used to to reach slaughter weight!?

Vegetarians are not "full of it!." The process of producing meat is cruel and bad for the environment!. It's also bad for your body to ingest most of it!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm vegan, and I feel a stronger kindred with animals than I do with plants!. I'm not certain that plants do not feel pain of some type which is very different from us!. So the kindred feeling I have with animals is what keeps me from wanting to eat them!. I do not feel I am special or better because I am a vegan, if that is what you are getting at!. There is no proof yet that vegans are healthier or live longer!. It will need to be studied!.

This argument could go round and round because there are animals which eat animals, and there are animals which eat plants, and there are plants which eat plants!. Most of the persons (but not all) who post on this v & v section are kids in high school or college and haven't really lived on their own or supported themselves completely, and that is why you are seeing a lot of 'full of it' mentality!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm vegan and I would just say don't judge all of us as being the same!.

I agree with you about the plants, but I feel I'm doing my best to follow what my conscious tells me I should and shouldn't do for now!. I've been a vegan for a long time!.

Not anyone on this forum would be able to cite a reputable scientific link which specifically says that plants absolutely do not have feelings or feel pain!. They would be able to cite sources which say that we cannot necessarily draw the conclusion that what plants feel is "the same as" the kind of pain which animals experience!. In other words, they do not have pain as we know it!. Maybe we are just at the tip of discovery, which is what I believe!. Science once thought that the atom was the smallest particle to ever be found, and now we know that atoms consist of even smaller particles!.

So my answer is that right now - based on what I know and science has discovered - I tend to value animal life higher than I value plant life!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you're so worried about the plants, you should go veg!. Did you know it takes 5 to 15 pounds of plant food to produce a pound of what you call meat!? You, my dear misinformed meater, are killing more plants in a day than a vegan does in a week!

If an animal dies of heart failure, it's probably because of the stressful conditions in which s/he was raised!. Heck, many conventionally raised chickens are on the verge of heart failure when they're slaughtered because they grow so big so fast!.

Look, if you wanna eat meat, eat meat!. But don't hassle us because we point out the brutality of animal industry!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why would they try to consume the meat of a sick cow!? Besides, after you stop eating meat for a while you stop wanting it, and it will upset your stomach to eat it!. Why should they try!?

Plants are different from animals because they do not have a central nervous system and do not feel pain that way!.

Anyway, why should it bother you that someone doesn't want to kill animals for their food!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

!.!.!.!.!.
"Plants don't have brains, feelings, or a soul!. And neither do you!.
"
--sorry, i couldn't help it!!
this just goes to prove you can't really reason with indoctrinated people; in a way it's just like !.!.!.!.religion!.
'believe it!, don't put the muscle to work, don't think!.!.!.!.-it's a crime!!'

as a pantheist i could never agree with the v&v way of life

but then again!.!.!. even the air contains microorganisms!.!.!. so i sugest we stop breathing as well!.!.!.!.!. ((oh!, those poor little creatures!.!. how can we consume them like that!?!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Look, I dont think you should hold such a grudge against vegetarians!. I mean, it's their choice!. Im not a vegetarian myself and I think that (not to sound cruel or anything) god put these animals on the earth for us to benefit from them!. Just like he wants us to benefit from plants!. I mean, think about cows!. They have meat, they're skin is used to make leather AND they provide milk!. And trust me when I say, they dont do it all for themselves!. I'm not agreeing with you, but I'm not disagreeing with you either!. Im just making a point!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm a vegan and I don't like meat anymore!. I just want to say that I'm seeing a lot of full of it from both sides!. For one thing, as someone mentioned, some animals eat animals and animals eat plants!. We have cycles on this planet, but some of us want to break from that meat eating cycle because we want a change!. Not all of us will preach at you!.

also, it is not true that all doctors say eat meat, and it is not true that all doctors say not to eat meat!. Doctors suggest more vegetables and fruit, but most doctors also suggest lean meats, chicken and fish!. I have proof of that!. Here are several opinions based on scientific fact:

http://jama!.ama-assn!.org/cgi/reprint/283!.!.!.

http://www!.nlm!.nih!.gov/medlineplus/ency/!.!.!.

http://www!.mayoclinic!.com/health/vegetar!.!.!.

http://www!.mayoclinic!.com/health/vegetar!.!.!.

I will still be a vegan no matter what the National Institutes of Health, Mayo Clinic, AMA or JAMA thinks, but I just wanted to say that I'm tired of myths and misconceptions from both sides of the fence!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

WOW!. So, if I found a gun I might have a lot of trouble deciding if I should shoot a bullet at your head or a tree trunk, if those were my options!. The tree is alive, and it's been around much longer than you!. It is more grounded than you!. The tree doesn't judge or try to tell me what to eat!. Then again, it doesn't have a brain!.
If everyone felt the compassion you feel for plants, the world would be a much nicer place!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've never heard a doctor say ''Eat meat''!.

But I hear them say ''Eat fruit and vegetables''!.

Meat is optional, we clearly don't need it in our diets!.
If we did *need* it, I would surely be dead by now, as would my fellow veg*ns!.

Oh, and to clear up the confusion, plants don't feel pain!. They have no central nervous system!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

a plant may be a living thing as well, but it can't feel pain!. and secondly, no they wouldn't eat it reguardless of how it died, because it's still meat!. and it's not that way for all vegetarians!.!.!.a lot of people just don't like the taste of meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why does it matter to you!? I am not a vegitarian, and I really could care less if anyone else is or isn't one!. Are they harming you in any way!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

If an animal died of heart failure, the meat would be no good anyways!.
Too much stress on the heart can cause it to release toxins into the body which would create a poor quality meat as a result!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why does it bother you so much!? Whats with the negative feelings towards vegetarians!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

boreddWww@FoodAQ@Com

if your mom died of heart failure without pain would you eat her!?

there's your answer!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

ok first off

Splendid ! slickness
You just made an *** of yourself!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no offense but the Q will last all of 30 secondsWww@FoodAQ@Com

I'm a vegan and I don't go around preaching at people!. I know what you mean, but don't you think those preachy types are 'full of it' personalities to begin with!? You find them in every area of life, whether it be food, lifestyles, religion or politics!.

In my line of work, I am often called in to inspect various work places including everything from food manufacturers to forensic laboratories!. I know for a fact that tofu and soy manufacturers are required to use specified cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and latex or other approved gloves!. The tofu and soy manufacturers also must use pesticides from time to time when it is required by law, and they must keep up with inspections!. Some vegans that I know do not want to hear that those chemicals and the gloves have been tested on millions of animals!. They also don't want to hear that it is a broad stretch of imaginative writing for tofu or soy products to claim no animals were harmed or tested!.

I posted in another question recently that many manufacturers of things like soy or tofu should say on their labels: "No animals were directly harmed or tested by definition of what current laws and weasel words allow us not to tell you!."

That is why I do not try to preach to others even though I am a vegan!. I've found that my lifestyle, honesty, balance and reason has helped win over many persons to consider being vegan!. Vegans are not perfect!. What I see in the future is a society where we will finally approach trying harder to be healthy and realizing the impact we have on our environment!.

Edit: Since others are bringing in environmental concerns!. Environmental groups, such as Greenpeace and the WWF, have reported that both soybean cultivation and the probability of increased soybean cultivation in Brazil, has destroyed huge areas of Amazon rainforest and is encouraging further deforestation!. If we were to all go vegetarian or vegan, this would need to be thought out in greater detail!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

your jealous because you aren't as loving towards animals as us!. peta!.com show how badly the animals are treated when they are slaughterd!. Its heart breaking!. Plant don't have a brain and heart like us!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
