For a Vegetarian - Eggs or Milk which is worse?!

Question: For a Vegetarian - Eggs or Milk which is worse!?
I'm a vegetarian and I cant comprehend why eating eggs is ok in the vegetarian or 'lacto-ovo' diet (this has come from me discovering how much egg is actually in vegetarian products) !.!. I feel this on two levels, one is the basic egg industry in general the majority of which is shocking!.!.and secondly I thought the whole point of being vegetarian was not to eat living beings!?

So are eggs on the same level as milk!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, I think we should avoid both! But as someone who has wavered between vegetarianism and veganism, I understand the need to know where the worst cruelties lie and to avoid them first!.

I think they're both about exploitation with eventual slaughter, so morally they're on a par!. What we need to determine is which practice causes the most suffering before the animals are killed on our behalf!.

I've always felt that battery farmed eggs are the very worst of the worst!. And since becoming veg I've gone out of my way to avoid them, as intensive farming of chickens is cruelty+++!.

If you live in Europe or the US, the dairy industry is complicit with the veal industry which is also extremely cruel, but here in Aus it is less so (still so, but much less so than elsewhere!.) And of course the separation of cows from their children is very upsetting to both of them!. We shouldn't be making that happen for the sake of a flat white and buttered toast when we can drink soy lattes and use marge!.

Free range eggs are probably about the same as milk in Aus, but it depends enormously on the size of the farm!. The smaller the better!. Don't go for massive free range farms - they keep 10's of thousands of birds in sheds (not cages)!. Chickens don't cope well in groups of more than 5 or 6!. They can't establish a pecking order, freak out completely and peck each other viciously in fear and aggression!. So they have to be 'de-beaked' which is painful!. Home farms = better!. Same for cows too, especially if they can keep their offspring with them, you can avoid some of the pain of separation!.

Hope that helps! It's good to keep all these issues in mind!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Are ya'll really weepy about a chicken's version of "the curse"!? The egg would have been released anyway!. My objection to the egg is the treatment of the chickens (and taste, too close to poultry)!. As long as the egg is unfertilized, it's not a living thing!.

One of the justifications for milk that I've heard of is: It's consumed after the calf has received its share!. In India, it's a second mother because after a mom can't breastfeed anymore (various reasons), it continues to give nutrition to the child!. So, if consumed properly, it's not supposed to be laden with growth hormones or be stolen!.

That said, animal treatment is f'ed up in America, so I see the reason for going vegan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

In my personal opinion no they aren't on the same level because an egg was meant to be a living creature whereas milk is a natural product from a living creature that doesn't harm or kill the animals (you can get milk where the cows were not injected and such ) whereas eggs are meant to be an actual creature but was never fertilized!.!.!. however that is just my vegetarian opinion I do have some friends that will not eat or drink either of them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

An egg is not a living being, its a one cell organism, like the ones we produce every 28 days!. The eggs you buy in stores are not fertilized by a rooster so they would of never become a chicken!.
I buy only free range eggs where the hens are treated well not locked in little cages!.
If your talking about ethics I think eggs win out since the Milk industry produces calves that are sold for veal :-(
If your talking about health both eggs and milk need to be used in moderatoin, since they contain cholesterol!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

im veg for religious purposes!.!.in Hinduism, milk consumption i totaly fine,so its only eggs that i consume in very small rare quantities!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well!.!.!. I'd have to say milk is worse, because of the injections they have to give the cows to make them produce more milk, not to mention the machines they have to be hooked up to, I've heard it can be painful to the cow!. And eggs are just!.!.!. infertile eggs!.
^^; But that's just my opinion!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

whats wrong with eating free range eggs!? they were never fertilised by the male so it was never going to be a chick anyway!.!.!.!.!.

and whats wrong with drinking milk!?!? fair enough, some cows are treated badly etc, but if you get your milk from a reliable source where you know the cows are treated well whats the problem!?!?!?!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!. Their equally as bad!. Have you ever looked up what they do to chickens to make them have so many eggs!? Or what the living conditions of the chickens are!? Or what they do to cows to get the amount of milk they do!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

eggs are definately worse cuz they r technically baby animals while milk is just a by-productWww@FoodAQ@Com

eggs are worse!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
