If you ate meat but once a year could you still call yourself a vegetarian?!

Question: If you ate meat but once a year could you still call yourself a vegetarian!?
Believe me, I believe in being as compassionate and mindful as possible!. However there are circumstances out there in which it might be morally correct to make a compromise!. I won't go into all of them know but just know they are out there!.

If a person 99!.999% of the time does not eat meat but there is a place within his or her being for some flexibility should this person not be recognized as a vegetarian and accepted into the community!? It seems some "vegetarians" want a more strict and IMO legalist definition of the term!. But to me this can be alienating and is not in the true spirit of what it means to be vegetarain!.

I do also realize there is a point in which the term gets so watered down it ceases to mean anything!. So I do understand the importance of having some criteria as well!.

Happy thinking : )Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Self-definition is important - you are whatever you want to be!.

There are numerous analogies - some of which have been mentioned here as answers already!.

Can someone who has slept with a person be called a virgin!? Obviously not - but this is not analogous because virginity is not a state which you can reclaim!. Surely vegetarianism is!.

Look, then, at religion: is there wiggle room for sin!? Yes!. Can I call myself a Christian even if I sin and know I am sinning!? Yes!. I might not be as good a Christian as some others!.!.!.

And you might not be as staunch a vegetarian as some!.

But you still subscribe to the philosophy of vegetarianism for the most part!. You adhere the the central message of compassion!.

So it's like me trying to do what Jesus would want me to do!.!.!. but without following the Church's commandment to exclude gays!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi, I personally wouldn't call myself a vegetarian if I ate meat once a year!. I go to my family at Christmas and they all sit down and eat turkey, I could never touch the meat, even though it is free range and organic!.
You have to do what you feel happy with, is it that important to be called a vegetarian!? At least you are still saving the lives of a lot of animals by not eating them all year round! :)
with respect!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think you are still a vegetarian!. I am, and I ate turkey on Thanksgiving!. (So once in a little over a year) It depends on the situation I think!. To me vegetarians have less strict boundaries than vegans!. Seriously, 99!.999% of the time is hard work and you should be proud of the accomplishment!. Being a vegetarian is a commitment, stick to it, but to your own boundaries!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You would have to tell people you are a vegetarian, otherwise they will try to serve you meat all the time!. But if you eat meat once a year or only occasionally, you'd be a "near" vegetarian!.

This is really an ideal philosophy because eating less meat is much better for your health and the environment, but every now and then, nothing beats a real beef hamburger off the grill!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Don't worry about the terms, it's up to you, there are no rules!. If I was having a cigarette once a year I'd pretty much consider myself a non-smoker but the labels don't matter!. It's your choice and if you consider yourself a meat-eater who does so very rarely or a vegetarian who allows himself some leeway then it's all cool!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's not like the veg-police are going to come and take away our Veg ID cards!.

My cousin and his wife are both vegetarians!. He became veg not long after meeting her!. They allow themselves each the meat of their choice on their anniversary!.

I draw the line at folks who still eat fish and call themselves vegetarians!. Or worse, those who have simply cut back on their red meat consumption and call themselves vegetarian!.

That irks me!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would say you prefer a vegetarian lifestyle but you're not a vegetarian!. After all, if you're married and you have sex with someone outside your marriage, you can't say you're faithful to your spouse can you!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Depends what meat you have!. If you have KFC (Kentucky Fried Cruelty), Your no vegetarian, if you have battery chickens, you no vegetarian!. However, if you have Kosha meat, or free range, eating meat once a year is better than most!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If I sin once a year can I still call myself a Christian!?
The bottom line is if someone wants to call them selfs a vegetarian and eat whatever, it's their business not ours!.

I'm a 52 yo vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

meat is not a vegetable therefore you are not a vegetarian if you even eat meat once!. There is no exception to the concept of NO MEAT!!! :PWww@FoodAQ@Com

Honestly I don't think you would still be vegitarian BUT if you want to call yourself vegitarian then go for it ITS YOUR CHOICE!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

You can call yourself whatever you wantWww@FoodAQ@Com

No, the point of being a vegitarian is to stay true and not break it, so no!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you only slept with one person, could you still call yourself a virgin!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There are at least dozens of reasons why people become vegetarians, and so the term is broad enough that we should accept both answers to your question as valid!. I!.e!., if I am a vegetarian for largely environmental reasons (that is, I think the impact of meat-eating on the environment is horrendous and am a vegetarian to reduce my environmental footprint), then eating meat once a year is more or less functionally equivalent to never eating meat - that is, to all reasonable approximations my impact on the environment is indistinguishable!.

However, if I am a vegetarian for ethical reasons (I believe meat is murder), then under no circumstances is meat-eating acceptable, since it always involves taking a life!.

Again, if you're a vegetarian primarily for health reasons (your last heart-attack and stroke convinced you you need to improve your diet), meat once a year can probably be ignored as irrelevant!.

I don't think there is a "true spirit" of the term, since it encompasses all of these lifestyle choices!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Under those circumstances I would say the person "adheres to a mostly vegetarian diet", or is a semi-vegetarian!. If a person only eats meat once or twice a year and otherwise has a meat free diet, then that's great, and no one should put that person down or "exclude" them!.
However, most vegetarian and vegans work really hard to maintain a meat-free/ cruelty free lifestyle, and often have strong convictions to go along with it!. I know it kind of bugs me when people say they are vegan too, except for every once in a while they have cheese piza, and they only eat turkey on Thanksgiving and ham at Christmas!. After all you wouldn't say you're "straight-edge" but then drugs every now and then, or say you're "abstinent", but then still have sex on occasion!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Could you please describe an ethical situation in which an ethical veg*n would be morally justified in eating animal flesh!? Because unless my body was already manifesting symptoms of starvation and I had absolutely no other choice to save my life except to eat meat, I can't think of any such situation!. (And none of that hypothetical "if someone held a gun to your head" stuff!.)

If one can call himself vegetarian whilst eating meat - deliberately - once a year, then why not eat eggs and sausage at breakfast, tuna melts for lunch, and cheeseburgers at dinner and call yourself a vegan!? After all, you're not eating animal flesh and secretions during the other 22 1/2 hours of the day, right!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Personally, i think "vegetarian" is a way of describing a diet!. the point of using words is to communicate, they are not merrit badges, they are communication!. If a person finds it easiest to describe their diet using the word "vegetarian", that is the only thing that really matters, even if they are only using the word for one night in which they dont eat meat (i'm not saying they can call themselves veg from that day on, i'm saying they can say "i'm eating vegetarian tonight" ect)!. And as far as who gets "accepted into the community" i think if someone is interested in vegetarianism and willing to have an open mind about vegetarianism, they are part of the community and they can determine their own level of innvolvement from there!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hmmm!.!.!.!.!. well i am a vegetarian, and its because i have a true love of animals, and i think killing animals for what they hav is wrong! My family eats meat, and when they do i leave the room, I joke around by saying there are dead animals in our shopping cart, or in the table, but only to get my point across because i am a very argumentative person!. I know that there are lots of people out there that love pets, and some animals, but "if you love animals called pets why do you eat animals called dinner"!? Anyway!.!.!. In your case, it kinda depends the reason you are a vegetarian, and if it is the same reason as mine, then I dont think its all that good, if you are a vegetarian because of health reasons, or something then yea, because there are worse things for you!. Meat is a main source of protein, and when i became a Vegetarian, I had to replace it, with other foods rich in protein, because my heart was having problems, but i wasnt about to give up what i Believe in, just because of that!.

If people are going to say your not a real vegetarian!.!.!.
Think About It, Who is saying this!? If it is someone who eats meat all the time then ignore them because you may not be doing everything but at least you are doing what you can, when they dont even atempt it, alot of my friends say that they would never be able to become a vegetarian because they are this and that, and most of the time they say something about their family, and If you really are into your family, and their traditions, and heritage, and stuff then Ignore the mean people and do what you know is right! At least you Know that You are helping animals!. =]Www@FoodAQ@Com

I call myself a Buddhist and one of the most important things to me is:

Wisdom:
1!. Right view Wisdom
2!. Right intention

Ethics:
3!. Right speech
4!. Right action
5!. Right livelihood

Mental discipline:
6!. Right effort
7!. Right mindfulness
8!. Right concentration

It often takes a lifetime of effort to master all of these elements simultaneously in every moment!.

This provides criteria for me to work towards!. If I mess up, am I no longer a Buddhist!? What must I do to call myself what I like!? Must I strive to convince others, or must I first convince myself!?

What must I do to explain to people that I am just a man!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I personally wouldn't!. I'm veg for religious/cultural reasons, and find consciously taking an exception horrendous!. If you accidentally take in meat, then yes, you're still veg, because you didn't know (ie when I was a kid, I didn't know what gelatin was!.)

If you're eating meat for health reasons, you don't know how to be veg!. As for gel caps, I look for generic alternatives that don't have gel caps!. If it's supplements, I'll refuse to eat it, but if it's for medicine that you absolutely need, I'd make the exception because there is literally no alternative!.

I don't consider it rude to not eat offered by the host, simply state: No thank you, But I appreciate the offer!. Be polite, smile, and explain that you're vegetarian, and it's not rude!. As for going to waste, that's why I have omnivores as best friends!. I'm not Buddhist, but I am in a religion similar to Buddhism, and they advocate starving over eating meat!.

I'd say that if you plan on eating meat once a year, as other posters have said, you abstain from eating meat, but you're not a vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Not for this vegetarian!.
Being vegetarian is not a philosophical head game for me!. It is my lifestyle!. It is my commitment to my spiritual well being, my health and my conscience!. It is my commitment to the starving peoples of the earth that my consumption of foodstuff will be low on the food chain and responsibly chosen to preserve the planet and its resources to the best of my ability!.
It is my commitment to the principles of "ahimsa' to respect all life forms and to honor the natural life cycles of the animals, to treat them with love, compassion and respect as our "younger" brothers and sisters; adhering to the Sanskrit and Platonic doctrine of transmigration of souls; recognizing that I have participated in this journey through all 8!.4 million of species and would prefer not to do that again!.
Thinking about your question it indicates to me that there may be "parental reasons" for such an annual premeditated lapse!. But family pressure is no reason to 'knuckle under,' give in and violate our own principles!. !. !. even once a year!.
When you are committed to this lifestyle for spiritual reasons -- you did say you are a Buddhist didn't you!? -- there are absolutely no circumstances that would induce one to eat meat!. Period!.
Remember the first law of physics is a statement of the principle of karma -- for every action there is a reaction!. And rather like gravity, you do not have to believe in it for it to be so!. Jump off of the golden gate bridge and gravity takes over!. Period!. The same thing is true of karma!. There is karma associated with the killing of anything and also with the ingesting of meat!. Yes, that includes mosquitoes as well as cows; and mice as well as Turkeys!. So keep the house clean and the mosquito repellent handy!. And whatever the alleged compelling reason for this proposed annual "breach" of principle -- deal with it head on!.
My father became vegetarian years before he died because he saw what value there was in the shift for him personally!. No, I did not brow beat him into it!. However, I had created a vegetarian restaurant and devoted my energy to promoting that lifestyle with making the best food in town!.available to everyone even on the holidays!. Does that answer your question!?
!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hey, you can call yourself whatever you want!. Remember the name "vegan" is just a name!. I am asian and I can call myself "white" if I want!. Just that people wouldn't believe me!. So if you tell people you eat meat once a year, people wouldn't believe that you are a vegan!.

You can still call yourself that thoughWww@FoodAQ@Com

I had no idea that there was a club or a cult thing going on for vegetarians!. I don't think there is a problem with someone eating meat every once and a while!. You need protein in your diet, meat is an excellent source for it!. I think if you really want a good answer for this question the type of person to answer would be a vegetarian!. But coming from a meat eater, I don't see anything wrong with it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

if its not 100 percent vegetarian!.!.then they are not cause even if u eat it once u are NOT one!.!.

please answer my question ANYONE!.!. best anwser 10 pts!
