Why do so many Vegetarian products have such a high sodium content?!
I was just curious, since I became a vegetarian, I noticed that so many products have a higher than average sodium count!? Is it just the persative used in the products, or something else!? I'm just curious, thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have noticed this too, vegetarian products definitely have more sodium than their non vegetarian counterparts!. Veggie burgers have more sodium than regular burgers, tofu dogs have more sodium than regular hotdogs!. I saw a video on youtube where a vegan chef added a ton of salt while he was making a veggie burger!. Whether vegans or vegetarians like it or not the reason is simple, salt adds more flavor that is naturally lacking in vegetables or other meat substitutes!. I am a vegan and will admit that vegetables are more bland than meat when cooked!. This is why most people are not willing to give up their meat even though meat is not really all that healthy for them and why for most people it is very hard to become even a vegetarian, even when they really want to be one!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
all kinds of processed food have high sodium content- the next time you're in a grocery store, look at the back of chicken patties or tv dinners- the sodium and preservative content is even worse than with vegetarian products!.
The processed fake meats and snack aren't really healthy- they are just as bad for you as a bag of chips!.
Real foods like vegetables, beans, milk, don't have so much junk in them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Generally speaking, the healthier a food is, the quicker it will spoil!. (Hey, microbes know what's good for 'em too!)
This leaves us with a choice: Healthy foods that spoil quickly, or healthy foods that need to be preserved!. While not exactly a "health food", plain salt is better for your body than sodium benzoate, for example!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's because a lot of those products are highly processed--especially the ones imitating meat, like vege sausage, etc!. They make being a vegetarian easier, but I'm not convinced their better for your health than avoiding meat altogether!. And I'm not even sure they're "greener", since they're probably shipped in from who knows where!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I don't know what a persative is but the salt content is no different than any other prepared or processed foods!. High salt content for flavoring is how all food costs are kept down!. You are paying for convenience, not health!.
