Why be Vegan?!

Question: Why be Vegan!?
I can understand not wanting to eat factory raised eggs or milk from cows that have hormones injected into them, but why not eggs from free-range chickens(they lay the eggs anyway) and why not milk from happy cows!? It takes about 2 pounds of feed to make 1 pound of eggs, which is a pretty good return for the grain in terms of protein!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

most Vegans I know have eating disorders or are a little wacko!. every vegan i see looks pale and frail!.!.!.malnourished!. some people believe in all organic peace loving no animal stuff!. just differentWww@FoodAQ@Com

Well, first of all, free-range is a bunch of greenwashing!. The laws governing free-range are so weak that the animals raised freerange aren't afforded much better care than conventionally raised animals!. And even free-range animals are killed when production declines!.

As for milk, unless you're a baby cow, there's nothing natural about it!. And no cow is happy to have her baby taken from her and the milk used to feed humans--who don't need it anyway!. Cows won't give milk unless they get pregnant--and even "happy" cows are inseminated--and that's to nourish their young!. They're no different from other mammals in this regard!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

When you look into the business of "free range" eggs, the chickens do not really have a much better life than caged!.

The popular myth that “free-range” egg-laying hens enjoy fresh grass, bask in the sunlight, scratch the earth, sit on their nests, and engage in other natural habits is often just that: a myth!. In many commercial “free-range” egg farms, hens are crowded inside windowless sheds with little more than a single, narrow exit leading to an enclosure, too small to accommodate all of the birds at once!.

Both battery cage and “free-range” egg hatcheries kill all male chicks shortly after birth!. Since male chicks cannot lay eggs and are different breeds than those chickens raised for meat, they are of no use to the egg industry!. Standard killing methods, even among “free-range” producers, include grinding male chicks alive or throwing them into trash bags and leaving them to suffocate!.

Whether kept in sheds or cages, laying hens—who can naturally live more than ten years—are considered “spent” when they are just one or two years old and their productivity wanes!. Rather than being retired, “free-range” hens are slaughtered to make room for another shed of birds!.

And as for milk, Why would someone want to drink something that was produced for another animals offspring!?
I don't want to deprive a calf of their milk, which in nature is the only purpose the milk was produced for!.

Adam how do you work that one out!? the fruit and veg that I eat are grown on a small local organic farm that grow the produce to sell to the public, the slugs nearly always have had their share first!. And they only use compost made from vegetation!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

For most, the reason they dont want to eat or drink any animal products is because of cholesterol!. Cholesterol ONLY comes from animal products!. you cant find it in fruit, vegetables, nuts, or grains!. the only reason food has cholesterol is because they put animal products into food!. Cholesterol is one of the HUGE factors for heart disease and stroke!.!.!. being vegan is a MUCH healthier way of living!.!. it has been proven by scienceWww@FoodAQ@Com

Hi-yea Some_Guy!.

Three reasons that I can think of!. First, is religion !. In some
religions people are prohibited from eating meat because
God told them not to!. Other folks do not want to disturb
the spirit of an animal by killing it!. Some people have
allergies to meat products!. In the opinion of some, even an
egg is a living thing and should not be killed!. This might
be true if the Rooster has been in the hen house!.
Vegetarians and vegans have a hard getting enough
protean in there diets, but it can be done!. Soy is a good
source of protean even for those of us who eat meat!.
Bodybuilders often use soy powder to build up muscle!.
This earth would feed everyone on it if MAN would just
let it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

For many people, the primary reason is that it is unethical to kill other sentient beings!.

p!.s!. I have several black vegan friends

"We evolved as scavengers eating the marrow from lion kills and now we eat meat when we can!."

True, however, vegans have now evolved past that stage too!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wow!.!.!.

Some of the people who answered this post are complete idiots!. Heather, have you met more than one vegan!? I'm a vegan, but I don't really tell anybody because of how narrow-minded people are (i!.e!. you) against vegans!. Where do you get your protein/calcium!? Blah blah blah!. I've heard it all before and it's obnoxious!. Maybe you need to get out of your parents' damned basement and meet more vegans before you go making stupid assumptions!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans are wonderful people!. They care so much about animals that they give up all animal by-products!. Free-range is not all what you think!. The animals can still be harmed in the process!. Stop judging the vegans and leave them alone!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

to be a egan is to not eat anything from any animal!. People just don't like harming animalsWww@FoodAQ@Com

free range doesn't mean the chicken are walking around clucking and being happy, some don't chose to go out, and how do you know if a cow is happy or not!?!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because everyone has freedom to choose what they want!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is wrong to eat eggs because the hens who lay the eggs are all eventually SLAUGHTERED!. Thus, buying eggs contributes to the poultry industry!. It is wrong to drink milk because dairy cows are all eventually SLAUGHTERED when they stop producing enough milk!. Thus, buying milk from "happy cows" contributes to the beef industry!. I really don't think that dairy cows are happy!. They're only producing milk because they had calves that were taken away and most likely slaughtered for veal!. also, they were probably artificially inseminated!.!.!.

"I can think of no indiginous culture(save Budhist monks) that are vegan!. Humans are opportunist carnivores!. Save for Michael Jackson, I can think of no black American that claims to be vegan!."

Oh REALLY!. Just because you haven't personally met any black vegans, there must be none!? Thats verrrry logical!. If humans are carnivores, as you claim, explain why eating animal flesh and animal products makes humans FAT, diseased, and generally unhealthy!. also, please explain why humans lack sharp claws, sharp teeth, and the speed and strength necessary to hunt and kill animals!. also, why would humans have to COOK animal flesh if we were carnivores!? Our bodies can't handle the bacteria found in raw flesh!.

If anybody thinks that veganism is unhealthy, spend 5 minutes on this site: http://www!.veganbodybuilding!.com/Www@FoodAQ@Com

"Cage-Free"/"Free-Range" hens come from the same hatcheries that battery hens come from, all of their male brothers are killed by suffocation or being ground up alive, the girls themselves endure the same bodily manipulations and mutilations, and they ALL ultimately end up at the same slaughterhouses when their "production" declines!.

I am often asked "Don't you think it is still better that people buy 'Cage-Free' eggs rather than battery produced eggs if they are going to buy eggs anyway!?" I feel the person actually wants to believe that their consumer dollar is not paying for someone else to commit animal abuse, when in fact it is – no matter what production means were used!.

It is like asking if I think strangulation is better than suffocation!. My answer is: Neither is an acceptable option!. There is simply NO way to humanely produce eggs for human consumption!.

First, I would not want anyone to buy "Cage-Free" eggs if they are doing so because they have compassion for the animals and convince themselves that they have made a humane choice!.

One of the most destructive things we can do for the animals is to lie to ourselves, or allow ourselves to be fooled an misinformed into believing that animal agriculture of ANY kind is humane!.

Second, the so called "Cage-Free" or "Free-Range" eggs are produced with an exorbitant profit margin in comparison to battery produced eggs!. Therefore, well meaning consumers will be unwittingly padding the already thick pockets of egg producers, hatcheries, and poultry slaughterhouses, which will only allow them to increase the size of their operations and advertising budgets, which will in turn lead to even more suffering!.

Third, the question forgets the most obvious choice: Don't buy eggs at all!. Once people allow themselves to entertain the possibility of living egg-free, it's quite empowering!. They suddenly realize that Yes! It can be done!. Millions of people before them have cut eggs and products made with eggs out of their lives and are doing just fine! Not only vegans, but millions of people from other cultures don't eat eggs!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I ask myself that question everyday!.!.!.

But vegans claim its "healthier" or "we dont want to harm animals"

But uhh last time I checked meat and eggs and cheese and stuff is good for you, and eating an animal that is ALREADY DEAD is not harming it!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

some just dont want to use animals at all

EDIT fluffycat!.!.!.you dont want to deprive baby cows of the milk!.!.!.but you have no problem depriving animals of the fruits and veg you eat!?!?!? hmmm bit hypocritical to meWww@FoodAQ@Com

Because it is a control and attention issue!. I've never met a quiet vegan!. They all have to announce the fact that they are vegan within a 15 minute window of meeting them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

be vegetarian instead of vegan
its too extreme
i would but i dont really like veggies :/Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's passive-agressive tree hugging for weenies!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is to protect animals!.!.!.!.but it can lead to a very unhealthy diet!.!.!.and almost nothing vegan tastes good (vegan sweets, i mean!.!.!.not fruits and veggies)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

most Vegans are not christian's!.!.!.

because christians no and believe that God gave us animals TOO EATWww@FoodAQ@Com
