Is it OK for my new pup to be fed a Vegetarian diet?!

Question: Is it OK for my new pup to be fed a Vegetarian diet!?
My partner and I have recently decided to go veggie (mainly due to health and environmental issues)!. We collect our new pup from the breeder soon and he has been fed a fresh meat diet so far - do we need to continue on this path with him or is it OK to feed him a Veggie diet!. We want him to be happy and healthy so need advice on what would be our best option!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think it probably best to maintain the diet he is on!. I don't think he'll find other forms of protein as palatable!. Vegans understand that protein is necessary in a vegetarian diet and that heam found mainly in meat is necessary for the proper absorption of protein into the blood stream!. If you put legumes in his dish you will probably find them still there in the morning!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, not really, while dogs are both carnivors and omnivors, (cats are actually complete carnivors) dogs need meat for protein and prefer the taste of it!. You can ask a vet to make sure but in general its not a good idea; vegetables alone do not provide enough nutrition for dogs or humans!.!.!. it's sad that you would consider forcing your lifestyle on an innocent creature!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it's not healthy for dogs to be vegitarians!.!. they need protein, the kind of protein that comes from meat and meat only!.!.!. dogs are not like humans, they do not have the same bodies that we do or the same needs!.!. it is healthy for us to be vegitarians, but not for them!.!. it is a whole nother story!.!.!. also there are some non-meat prducts that arent good for them, and can actually kill them, such as grapes!.!.!. they just have different systems!.!. of course adding vegis to their diet can be good, but make sure you give them some real meat daily, or at least every other dayWww@FoodAQ@Com

Well!.!.!.!.!.!.!.actually!.!.!.!.!.!.its "ok"!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.but well!.!.!.!.!.he may suffer from malnutrition!!!!!!

I mean!.!.!.!.!.!.a Dog is a carnivore hon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

n yes!.turns out!.!.!.!.!.!.U "can" feed ur dog veggie stuff!

But then!.!.!.!.!.!.its a dog!!!!

He wont relish it!.!.!.!.!.!.!.n in some cases!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.the dig was also malnutritioned!

So well!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.try n keep him off it!

I mean!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.hes a dog!.!!!!

Probably not meat has esseincial vitamins & protein the dog needs to stay healthy!.!.!. Another thing is meat is brain food!.!.!. it's said that the reason humans intelligence increased as much it did over the years is due to vitamins & protein found in meat!.!.!. discovery channel rocks lolWww@FoodAQ@Com

No, its not ok, because expessially puppies need meat for protien!. If he is on a vegitarian diet he will become weak!. Go to pet smart, or pet co and buy some soft food, and when he gets older buy him crunchy food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

OFCOURSE! Before my dog died 4 months ago (we got him when I was in 3rd grade!.!.!. I am 23) we fed him Tofu and frozen vegies!.!.!.!. he was allergic to dog food (it gave him ear infections) and he LOVED it! The vet also usre to tell us how healthy he ws!!!!! I would recommend itWww@FoodAQ@Com

That is so stupid!. Dogs eat meat!. They need to eat meat!. Do not put your dog on a vegetarian diet!. That would not be healthy for the dog!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

hell no
get that dog a frickin t bone
and i swear to god it better not be a tree hugger dog
that would make it a gay dog
GET IT A T-BONE!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

why the hell would you do that!? dogs are carnivorous!. their ancestors are wolves!. don't torture the dog like that please!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no because dog food have good protein in there food you should not take the dog food alway from themWww@FoodAQ@Com

Absolutely not! you dog will die from the diet your using!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

as a vegetarian!.!.!.

NO!

it's your dog!.!.!.!. come on!Www@FoodAQ@Com

my dog has been vegitarian since he was 8 weeks old!. he's 4 now!. There is a brand called "Wellness" that has an awesome veggitarian bag of food!. Just make sure you add some suppliments for protien!. I use this veggie poweder stuff that is super high in protein to mix in with his food!.

My dog goes to the vet every 6 months for a check up and is totally fine!. He gets enough protien!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not sure, but I do know that when I was living at home and my sister had a dog, he would wander through mom's 5 acre market garden and help himself to the veggies he could get at!. Seriously! He would snip off the low peas from the vine and eat our dill too! We gave him vegetables all the time and he preferred it to meat!. We did give him meat but he ate very little of it!. He was in excellent heath until he died (was attached by another dog and died as a result)!. I'm no vet, but I do think dogs need some meat as their teeth are designed for gnawing on bones and such!. Perhaps give him bones or chew toys to keep his teeth strong and if your vet says he needs meat, you can find organic meat farmers that may be willing to sell or give away their bones and scraps for dog meats!. Good luck and enjoy your new pup!

Edit: You should probably also post this in the pet section of this site!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

if you choose to do this, DO NOT make the switch using only the advice you find on this site or on the internet!. go to a vet who is knowledgeable in canine nutrition who can point you in the right direction!. even those of us on here who are veg*n are not professional veterinarians, and since your dog cannot tell you whether or not it feels well and is healthy, you should NEVER change your dog's diet without consulting a vet!.

to the posters above: dogs are omnivores, hence the varied teeth pattern!. if they were carnivores they would eat a diet consisting exclusively of meat!.!.!.!.!.try feeding a dog a peice of bread and see if they turn up their nose at it!. i guarantee you they will not!. dogs eat meat and plant matter!.!.!.!.!.it's what their teeth and digestive system were meant for!. if you don't agree with me, ask a vet!. they will love the opportunity to prove you wrong!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Like a couple other posters have said, this is a question for your veterinarian!. Personally I'd think a dog would do just find on a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, but I'm not a vet!.

BTW: If you read the ingredents on any bag of dry dog food you will find that 99% of the protein comes from plants like soy!. They add trace amounts of meat flavorings, probably bone and blood meal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A vegetarian diet is just fine for a dog!. They are omnivoirs, just like us and don't really need that much meat or any at all!. Check the web for some vegetarian dog food recipes!. A good place to look might be www!.care2!.com or www!.communitycures!.com !. Or, you could try www!.ask!.com and just type in your question!.

Good luck! :-)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Make sure you gradually change his diet!. If you just change he can get diarrhea!. Make sure he gets vitamins also too make up for what he is missing in the meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
