Well, why are you vegetarian!? If it's for health or environmental reasons and animal suffering doesn't bother you, then I think it would be fine!. It does seem a little hypocritical to be vegetarian for animal cruelty reasons but still support animal killing and suffering through dissection!.

Animal welfare organizations have investigated suppliers of animals used for dissection and found truly horrific things!. For instance, at one of the largest suppliers, investigators documented cases of animals who were removed from gas chambers and injected with formaldehyde without first being checked for vital signs!. (Formaldehyde is a very irritating caustic substance that causes a painful death!.) Investigators videotaped cats and rats who were struggling during injection and employees spitting on the animals!. One rabbit, still alive after being gassed, tried to crawl out of a wheelbarrow full of water and dead rabbits!. Employees laughed as a coworker held the rabbit’s head under the water and pulled him out just as death seemed near!. They repeated the process until, bored with the “game,” the employee held the animal’s head under long enough to drown him!.

So the fact that an animal was killed for the purpose of dissection doesn't mean much!. Animals still suffer horribly in the process!. also, very few medical schools still use live animal labs these days!. Studies have shown that students who have used a non-animal alternative perform at least as well (and often better) in their coursework!.

There's no "vegetarian police" that will come and take away your vegetarian badge if you enjoy doing dissections!. I would just consider the suffering that is involved and decide whether that is compatible with your ethical convictions about animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If your interested in going to veterinarian school you will need to disect a number of animals, and learn sergical techniques on animal cadavers!. Everything can't be done on computer!. Would you want a doctor doing surgery on you, or your pet, who's only had experience on a computer simulation!?

BTW: I'm a vegetarian going to medical school now!. It isn't always easy, some things are down right gross, atleast you will not have to work on human cadavers!.

If you give this a thumbs down I hope you, or your pet, don't need surgery in the future!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Virtual dissection is not the same as actual hands on dissection and I agree with you, dissection is a fun learning experience as well as being a very important one especially if you are planning on going into any type of medical career!. It is really the only way to properly learn the anatomy of humans and other living creatures!. The animals have not been killed just for you to dissect, many were the victims of humane euthanasia due to people not caring if their animals bred indiscriminately or not - at least with dissection, their short lives were not in vain and people are learning from them!.

i'm a nursing student, and my opinion is that dissections are necessary for students who are in medical programs!.!.!.!.medical school, veterinary school, nursing school, etc!. they ARE NOT necessary for high school students or those casually taking a science course to fulfill a requirement in college!.

you can always ask for an alternative assignment and your teacher should be able to provide you with one!. when i was in high school our class did a dissection of baby chicks while they were still alive, and i refused the dissection on religious grounds!. i was given a different assignment and did not attend class the day of that project!. i also spoke with the prinipal at my school along with a few other students, and that project is no longer done at my high school!.

if you're wanting to be a vet you will have to do many, many dissections!.!.!.!.but in doing so you will learn to save the lives of countless animals!. in high school dissections are just a waste of lives and it is very, very sad to me!. =(Www@FoodAQ@Com

I never felt the need to disect animals to get a complete rounded education, i'm not sure why others think its needed!.

But anyway, if you want to do it, no amount of sayng "I don't want to because i'm a vegetarian" will change that, you will still want to!.

There are plenty of vets that are veggies, they must have disected animals and routinely cut them up and put them to sleep!. I think thats fine on a specific vet degree course!. But i can't possibly see why its necessary for school!.

Like you say, you have the abiltiy to do it on line so what we are talking about here is the enjoyment you feel you'll get from it!.

So, whats more important, a squids life, or 10 minutes entertainment !? Your choice, not ours!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't know if it's right or wrong to dissect the squid for your class, but if you want to become a veterinarian, then you will have to do it!. That and more!. One of my classmates wound up doing a lot of them prior to going to medical school to be a critter doctor!.
I will answer your question with a question (I know that's rude) Would you like to hug and cuddle a live squid!? I'm pretty sure that that would not be on the top of your 'To Do' list!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't think it's wrong at all!. You are disecting the squid for educational reasons, not just cutting it up for fun! Science requires work on animals and as long as it's done responsibly, I don't see a problem with that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well if ur a vegtarian cuz u dont like the meat then yeh its fine to like it!. But if u are veggy cuz u dont like the thought of the animals dieing to be eaten!.!.!. then yeh its wrong cuz at least if your eating it its not wasted!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is not wrong if you feel you can learn from it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It really depends on what you think, I personally dont like dissections, but I eat meat all the time!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well I'm a vet student and I can tell you that you're certainly going to be doing a whole lot of dissections if you choose to this course!. There's loads of vegetarians and some vegans too who are doing this course at my uni!. Dissections are essential in the learning process - hands on experiences are always the best!. Although I do feel the empathy for these animals it's virtually impossible to replace dissections with other methods that are as helpful!. We also use pics and virtual programmes but they are just not enough!. All of the animals provided for the dissection classes have been euthanised as humanely as possible and a lot of them were actually destined to be put down due to illnesses etc!. So why waste their bodies and not use them for classes!? Besides, we don't go around killing animals for every dissection!. We try our best to use up the same whole body and not be wasteful!. And I do think dissection is cool, to able to see and feel what others usually can't, which makes me appreciate life even more!. I think the most important thing to remember is not to take these animal lives for granted and treat their bodies with respect, just as how medical students should during their human dissections-although that might not always be the case(personal observation) ^^"Maybe someday scientists are able to develop lifelike bodies for dissections or improve the method and cost of virtual dissections so that no lives are lost, but until then this is only way to learn!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
