My daughter wants to eat a vegan diet to lose weight, Is that a good idea?!

Question: My daughter wants to eat a vegan diet to lose weight, Is that a good idea!?
She is rather fat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Yes, it's a very good way to lose weight!. One of my friends in college was obese and he lost over 30 pounds on a vegan diet!. I personally was able to lose 20 pounds of flab after becoming vegan!.

Becoming vegan doesn't automatically guarantee weight loss!.!.!.!.a diet full of simple carbs and vegan junk food isn't healthy or slimming!. It's best to focus on fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains!. Nuts are healthy but should be eaten in moderation!.

Here are some vegan weight loss stories and photos your daughter can see for inspiration: http://goveg!.com/f-veganweightloss!.asp

Good vegan sources of protein, iron, and calcium:

For goodness sake don't go down the Atkins (all meat) road! For the body to process all that protein, it actually takes calcium from the bones - just what a growing girl doesn't need!
Make sure she gets her protein from nuts, soya products, tofu, wholegrain breads, etc!. Lots of fresh veg and fruit - juices as well, not sugar-based or artificially flavoured soft drinks!. Lots of water - away from meals, never before or with!.
Google the Vegan Society for more info!.
She might be better off getting into it gradually, her body has a lot to cope with (I take it she's adolescent) and a sudden change of diet might make her feel a bit offcolour!. Keep the topic open, then she'll know you're supporting her desire to slim while keeping an eye on her well-being!.
It's horrid being a fat kid, do be aware if she's getting teased or bullied about it!. Gentle regular exercise is better than occasional huge workouts; make sure she walks every day, staring with short distances and taking it longer as she gets strongerWww@FoodAQ@Com

I would say that veganism is a lifestyle and not a diet per se!. At least, not in the same way that South Beach, Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig is a diet!. Meaning, it is not really a means to lose weight as much as it is (or at least should be) a way of living in numerous aspects of life!.
But!.!.that's not what you asked!. Any-who!.
If your daughter eliminates meat and animal by-products from her diet, she probably could lose quite a few pounds - only if she does it correctly!. She must eliminate junk food - sodas, cookies, chips, candy and any other heavily processed foods that she currently consumes!. If she doesn't, her weight will not budge!. She would also need to start drinking more water and herbal teas!. She should avoid white refined starches (such as white potatoes, regular pastas, white rice, etc!.)!. Those are not good!. Instead, she should eat sweet potatoes, brown rice and wheat pastas!.!.!.!.but all of those in moderation!.
She should eat plenty of fresh fruit and fresh veggies as well as good sources of fibre and protein: tofu, beans, whole-grain breads and cereals, nuts, etc!.
If she is serious, she should research it thoroughly first!. It is a huge commitment to give up practically everything that society leads us to believe is yummy and convenient!. She might even want to consult a nutritionist!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

well a REAL vegan diet would be good!.!.!.!.

but don't just do it to lose weight!.!.!.!.!. either do it as a healthy alternative or don't do it at all!.

since most use the diet as an excuse and then stop doing it once they reach their goal!.!. OR NOT reach their goal!.!.!. it's a bad idea to eat any plan just to lose weight!.

it's a life choice!.!.!.!. stick with it or!.!.!. forget it!.

eh, veganism is very healthy but watch out for vegan junk food!.!.!.!. it's just as bad as the rest of the junk/processed garbage out there!.

(there are FAT vegans!.!.!. no kidding)

for the person who claims that person developed a blood disorder in a vegan diet!.!.!. it probably was like with everything else!.!. it wasn't a well balanced vegan diet!.!.!.

stop blaming the diets!.!. it's not the diet it's the person not doing their job right!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no, because the being a vegan is not about dieting!. it is about the love of animals!. my advice is to make your daughter join weight watchers!. she would never survive being a vegan, because she would crave the food she could not have!. and NEVER call your daughter fat!. do you want to encourage eating disorders!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is only a good idea to exercise with a balanced diet!.

Having a vegan diet just to lose weigh is not a good idea, because once she gets off the vegan after losing the weigh, she might gain her weigh back!

Exercise and have a good heathy eating diet is the key!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, yeah I guess, but with ny diet, you still need to balance it and exercise!. And its not nice to to call your daughter "rather fat"!.

Edit: Veganism is more of a lifestyle, rather than diet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

She must learn to replace the protiens found in meat with similar nutritional products otherwise she could be in danger of becoming anemic!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My friend started eating vegan awhile ago, and developed a blood disorder!. so i would not suggest it!. and it is not nice to call your daughter fat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Not a good idea at all, join weight watchers!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
