Phenylketonuria - a genetic disease that is caused by an intolerance to an amino acid called phenylalanine!. Diet has to be restricted to foods low in phenylalanine, including dairy products, breast milk, meat, chicken, fish and legumes!. Starchy foods like bread and potatoes can be eaten in moderation by most people with PKU!. Artificial sweeteners (Aspartame) must be avoided!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

PKU stands for phenylketonuria in medical terminology!.It is a metabolic disease caused from the lack or reduced amount of an enzyme responsible for converting phenylalanine to tyrosine ( these are essential amino acids)!.

Patients tend to have a pale skin, this is due to the inability to form melanin, which is formed from the tyrosine that is supposed to be made by the body!.

Phenylalanine and its derivatives are found in the urine and blood in sufficient quantities!.

Mortality rate in infants is high if left untreated!. However, patients ( infants) are given the enzyme by injection or a diet that is low or one which contains no phenylalanine is given!.

That is the best description i could give!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

She mainly eats a vegan diet, ( without nuts), because she can`t break down phe!.!.!.It builds up in her brain and it becomes toxic!.She has a seizure disorder as well, ( sometimes part of the disease)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
