How extreme do you make your vegetarian diet?!

Question: How extreme do you make your vegetarian diet!?
I'm curious how far you cross the boundaries!? For example, I went to a habachi grill!. For people who don't know what one is:

A women ordered a vegi plate!. When the chef threw the veges on the same grill with the meat (but not in it), the women wouldn't even touch the food due to contaminations!.

I heard of others who will not cook on anything that has ever touched meat!.

Personally, I don't take it that far!. If the ingredience don't have meat in it, I'm happy!. I wouldn't throw away food because of contaminations!.

So I'm just wondering how strict yours is!. Would you return food like that women did, or would you just shrug your shoulders!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I would have taken the food!.

After all, I'm vegan because I don't want to contribute to the shameful meat, dairy, egg, etc!. biz!. But if I bought a veggie plate, the purchase is not for meat, therefore the restaurant will not have to replace any meat, and that's fine for me!. If the veggies were too close to the meat, I would ask the cook to separate them!.

It seems a little insane to not take the veggies just because they were prepared on the grill away from the meat (not even co-mingling with the meat)!. Didn't she realize when she ordered that they would be preparing it in front of her!? Strange!. But who am I to complain!.!.!.

If meat and my faux burgers accidentally touch on a barbecue, oh well!. I'm not going to waste just because they bumped up next to each other!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't eat any animal products, but I'll cook veggie burgers on a barbecue after my dad barbecued meat on it (but not IN meat juice)!. I don't neccesarily like it, but I still live with my dad and I think it's pretty nice already that he buys tofu and meat alternates for me and stuff!. I'm not going to make a big deal if I use the barbecue after him or a fork that touched meat touched something I eat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'd rather not eat food cooked on the same grill, and I won't eat food fried in the same fryer as meat products, but I'd probably eat it anyway!. If I'm at that sort of place, it's usually because I'm dragged there by omni family, and I'll practice vegan diplomacy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i'm with you, i kinda think thats nuts!. as long as it isnt cooked with the meat, doesnt have the meat in it i dont see the problem!. in fact that sounds kinda ocd- anyone like that, A!. shouldnt go out to eat, B!. should wear a mask so they dont accidentally injest dustmites!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would probably do what the lady did!. I just don't like the idea of meat juice all over my food!.

IDK, I'm very fastidious when it comes to food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

hahaha i would have laughed if i saw her!. i dont tak it that far!. as long as it isnt animal flesh, ill eat it!. : )Www@FoodAQ@Com

Usually I try to avoid food cooked on the same grill as meat unless there's no other option!. My main concern is fat and grease from the meat falling out onto the grill and then being absorbed by the veggies, fruits, or whatever else is being cooked!. That being said, I have eaten hash browns at Waffle House that were cooked on the same grill as bacon, because I was really hungry and dry wheat toast wasn't doing the trick!.

However, I absolutely will not eat any food that has been fried in the same oil or fryer as a meat product!. This comes into play with french fries all of the time at restaurants!. They throw the battered fish or beef or chicken into the oil, the fat leaks out, and then they remove the meat!. Then they put in the french fries, which effectively absorb that animal fat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am very clear about my being vegetarian and my need for clean cooking surfaces as well as about the oil that French Fried potatoes are fried in!. If meat or fish is cooked in it or on the same grill as in a Mongolian Grill, I choose to eat in a different place or have the food I eat cooked separately and on a clean surface!.
Which is why I love going to Stir Crazy they use only clean woks and clean utensils when they are preparing any dish and I get to watch them prepare it!
If I am at the Deli at Whole Foods I also make sure that the utensil used to portion my order is clean and has not been used in any non-veg food!. That is just common sense from where I sit!. !.
But I do that before the food has been put on a grill or in a wok or a Fry-o-lator and certainly before it is put on a plate for me!. Otherwise it is unfair to the business which is after all there to serve their customers and make them happy with their products!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i go to a restaurant like this with my husband, and i always tell them that i "can't have meat"!.!.!.!.i don't want to lie and say i'm allergic, but when i tell them that they always clean the grill off and sterilize it!. it only takes a second to ask and they are almost always very nice about doing it!.

if i forgot to do that though and was in the same situation as the woman you're talking about, i think i would eat it anyway so long as the meat did not come in direct contact with the food!. if they were using the same cooking knives and the getting the meat juices all over my food, then i would return it!.!.!.but you'd be hard pressed to find a restaurant that doesn't cook their veggie burgers on the same grill as they cook their hamburgers, and so on!. i think it's perfectly reasonable to ask that your food be seperated, but if you don't ask!.!.!.don't blame the restaurant!. it is the PATRON'S responsibility to state any dietary restrictions or special preparation instructions!.

EDIT: chef bette, stir crazy is where we go, too!. they're always so nice about cleaning and sterilizing the woks for me!.!.!.!.and the one near us has a great veggie bar for the stir frys! i would highly recommend stir crazy to anyone who wants a vegetarian-friendly chain restaurant!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
