Answers:
I don't eat eggs!. Free range is a term that isn't regulated when you are buying eggs from stores!. So free range could mean chickens in a yard for 5 minutes a day!. Nobody needs eggs, but I suppose the best way to get them would be having happy chicken pets that are well cared for in your own backyard!. Second best would be from a local CSA or Co-op!. That article was poorly written and didn't present any facts!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't eat eggs anymore!. Even if they are labeled as free range eggs!. Most producers eventually kill the egg laying hens after their egg production declines!. also, the laws governing free range certification are not very clear about the exact standards!. How often the hens are allowed outside, how long, the amount of open space, etc!. Of course free range is the better alternative compared with battery cages!. But I doubt the hens live out their lives and die of old age!. They generally end up on some ones dinner plate, or in pet food!. I have to agree with orange, the only time I would ever eat eggs would be if they were my own hens and I could guarantee their health and safety, or if the came from *non-kill* free range suppliers (ie!. when the hens are not killed after production drops or don't kill male chicks)!. But since I don't have any hens and trying to find such a supplier is so difficult, for me it's just easier not to eat them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

An egg is NOT an unborn baby chick!. I raise chickens!. The egg is not always fertilized!. You can raise hens without roosters and never have a fertilized egg!. It's the same with people, womens eggs don't get fertilized unless a man does his thing!. The eggs you buy at the store come from a de-beaked (cut the tips of her beak off) hen that spends her whole life in a cage never seeing the sun until she's seen to be unfit as a layer and they "dispose" of her!. If the carton says "uncaged" that means it's thousands of birds standing in a crowded hot metal building!. These hens are there without roosters and the eggs are not ever fertilized!.

So I guess my point is, if you get eggs from a farm like mine you may get a fertilized egg!. If you get eggs from the store, you will never have a fertilized egg!. And for there to be a baby growing in that egg, the egg has to stay at a temp of 105 for the baby to form!. Just because it's fertilized doesnt mean there's a baby inside!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I know a former free-range egg farmer and she said that any hen's egg production declines dramatically at 15 months!. She explained that it would just not be economically feasible to allow spent hens to "retire"!. It would cost too much to feed the animals until their natural deaths!. So all commercially-raised egg-laying hens (including those on free range farms) are slaughtered when their production rates decline!.

I would only eat eggs if I had my own hens, or if I knew someone who had rescued hens!. There is no inspection system for companies that label their eggs “free-range" so the label is often used to deceive consumers!.

also, both battery cage and “free-range” egg hatcheries kill all male chicks since they can't produce eggs!. Even "free range" producers throw male chicks into high-speed grinders or suffocate them in trash bags!.

I think having your own hens is ok if they're treated well and allowed to live out their full lives!. I would get rescued hens, so as not to support the hatcheries / animal farms!. The site could be improved by suggesting that people adopt rescued hens rather than buying eggs at the store!.

No I am not reading the link, but we keep chooks in our Ozzie back yard, they eat a fab diet of kitchen scraps, chickens are not vegetarians because they will eat lizards, mice, anything they can catch, ours are free range, chickens will lay every day once they reach their 'chicken puberty' ours have never seen a rooster!. I am totally agains those battery hen eggs, when my hens don't lay thru winter we buy free range, you all should!. Eggs are the most amazing package of goodness, I believe even after living as a vego for years and now I eat some meat again, that eggs are a very good part of a low impact on the environment food source if you are 'green' about what eggs you buy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I do the "keep some hens and sell the eggs to the village" thing because i know it reduces the amount of supermaket ( with all thier fake organic/freerange labelling ) eggs people buy!.

We sell ours for 90p for 6 eggs!. That undercuts all supermarket freerange eggs - we do this to encourage people to buy ours - not to make money, but because it stops them going to the market and buying commercial eggs!.

For a cruelty free commercial egg system, you would probably be looking to pay £5 for 6 eggs!.

Other than that bit, i didn't read the article ( sorry ) because it probably doesn't apply, i would never buy eggs from a commercial farm!.

any commercial farm, whether it be called battery, free range, woodland, organic or whatever, will result in the death of millions of hens at about 1 year old!. Thats besides the cockerals that are killed as soon as they are sexed ( about 1 week old )Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, it is kinda killing an animal because it's unborn and by refrigerating it or putting it in a carton means you're preventing it from living!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

u mustn't eat them they r the most precious thing for the mother chicken if ur a mother then u'll feel their pain!.i cant stand those feeling when we steal their baby away from their mother n they boiled them, pan fried although its not alive but their mother is!.so i wont eat them like forever!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i used to eat eggs until i got salmanilla poisoning from eating eggs and now i cant even be around the smell of eggs because it makes me sickWww@FoodAQ@Com
