How vegans obtain vitamin B12:
-Drinking fortified soy milk- Probably the easiest way to top up your b12 levels!. Most popular brands of soy milk, such as Alpro Soya, have vitamin B12 added!. I like Aplro Soya products- the website is below:
http://www!.alprosoya!.co!.uk/alpro/UK_en/i!.!.!.
-Another way of obtaining vitamin B12 is eating fortified breakfast cereals!.
-Incorporate nutritional yeast into your diet (you can sprinkle it on soups, porridge, etc)
-It is recommended that vegans supplement this vitamin, as plant based sources (such as seaweed/ unwashed vegetables) are not reliable sources, supplements help protect against any dietary deficiencies!. Vitamin B12 is found naturally in animal foods, particularly cow's milk!.
B12 is mportant for cognitive function & nerve health!. The first signs of deficiency is lack of energy!. It is a vitamin that is stored in the liver in large amounts!. If you go a day without an intake of B12 from the diet, your liver will take what it needs out of storage!. It is the *only* B vitamin that is stored in the body, the rest of the B vitamins are water soluble!.
''Vegans are recommended to ensure their diet includes foods fortified with vitamin B12!. A range of B12 fortified foods are available!. These include yeast extracts, Vecon vegetable stock, veggieburger mixes, textured vegetable protein, soya milks, vegetable and sunflower margarines, and breakfast cereals''!.
-A quote from The Vegetarian Society- it has some info on vegan nutrition!.
I suggest that you top up your B12 levels each day by eating some of the foods named above!. A lack of B12 can cause a form of anemia (spelt anaemia in the UK!)!. Pernicious anemia is a form of megaloblastic anemia!. Symptoms of B12 deficiency include weight loss, loss of appetite, pallor & fatigue, although there are a number of symptoms!. There are many anemias, but iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the western world!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hey!.
Very low B12 intakes can cause anaemia and nervous system damage!.
The only reliable vegan sources of B12 are foods fortified with B12 (including some plant milks, some soy products and some breakfast cereals) and B12 supplements!. Vitamin B12, whether in supplements, fortified foods, or animal products, comes from micro-organisms!.
Most vegans consume enough B12 to avoid anaemia and nervous system damage, but many do not get enough to minimise potential risk of heart disease or pregnancy complications!.
To get the full benefit of a vegan diet, vegans should do one of the following:
Eat fortified foods two or three times a day to get at least three micrograms (?μg or mcg) of B12 a day!.
Take one B12 supplement daily providing at least 10 micrograms!.
Take a weekly B12 supplement providing at least 2000 micrograms!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vitamin B-12 is naturally found in foods of animal origin including meat (especially liver and shellfish) and milk products!.

Vegan Society, the only reliable vegan sources of B-12 are foods fortified with B-12 (including some plant milks, some soy products and some breakfast cereals), and B-12 supplements!.[26] Fortified breakfast cereals are a particularly valuable source of vitamin B-12 for vegetarians and vegans!.
The Vegan Society, the Vegetarian Resource Group, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, among others, recommend that vegans either consistently eat foods fortified with B-12 or take a daily or weekly B-12 supplementWww@FoodAQ@Com

You want my sources!? Man, that would be going back years and years man!.!.!.
There are no stats on vegans and B12!. For stats, someone would have to do a study or keep track of such things -- currently, as far as I know, nobody has or does!.
Okay!.!.!.
B12 comes from bacteria!. Bacteria poo!.
If your diet lacks in bacteria, you will also lack in B12!.
Simple, yes!?
You will find such bacteria, often called the 'good bacteria', in your intestines, mouth, on the surface of nearly everything, on the surface of fruits and veggies, in fermented foods such as real non-vinegar pickles etc!., miso, natto, tempeh, or whatever!. also in nutritional yeast, fortified foods, etc!.
Just so you know, b12 deficiency it's not due to a vegetarian/vegan diet, as b12 deficiency is mainly found in meat eaters (very often elderly; overweight; eating a poor diet, and likely on various medications which cause malabsorption and killing of digestive flora etc!.)!.
It could of course be due to a lack of consuming b12, but that usually means a very bad diet bordering on a complete lack thereof -- which usually lacks in many other things too!.
Usually low b12 is due to things that hinder b12 absorption, or growth of digestive flora, or perhaps eating a diet high in processed foods, 'clean' foods, unfortified foods, and not enough 'real' food from the garden, etc!. or fermented foods etc!. Things like certain medications such as antibiotics are known to kill off one's digestive flora, a good source of b12!.
Anyway, obviously if it was due to specifically being vegetarian/vegans then all vegetarians/vegans (who do not take supplements such as myself - a vegan) would be seriously lacking b12!. I am not!. I know life long vegans from other countries who never took a vitamin or other supplement in their life simply because in other places in the world, a vegan diet is a complete and whole diet, lacking in nothing!. I have known many life long vegans from India over the years, for one example!.
> anemic
anaemic!?
well, of course not!.
Anaemia is not caused by lack of B12!. Hm, you did no research of your own, did you!? Maybe you should find your own sources -- it's better to teach someone how to teach themselves than it is to just hand over the knowledge on a silver platter -- because that sort of knowledge is easily forgotten!.
Anaemia has to do with red blood cells or hemoglobin -- or the lack thereof!. I'm sure there are other factors that can affect the transportation of oxygen in the blood too, but these two things are usually what the medical industry uses to explain it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vitamin B12 is easily obtained from synthetically made B12 that is sprayed on cereals or nutritional yeast, or even made into a pill!. What you should be asking is if you have intrinsic factor being made in your stomach or not!. It has been shown that loss of intrinsic factor by several factors (toxic buildup in the stomach, reflux disease, gastric by-pass surgery, even aging) causes loss of B12 absorption into the body!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
