Which of these is better for animals and the environment?!
(1) A sweater made from the wool of happy, loved and well looked after Australian alpacas (which I have personally visited on their farm);
(2) A sweater made from synthetic fibres, which requires petrochemicals to manufacture and was probably made in a foreign sweatshop!.
Vegans, which would you prefer to wear!.!.!.!.!.!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Alpaca wool is a relatively rare material in the clothing trade!. Therefore, they live on small-scale farms and are usually treated well!. However, if demand for alpaca wool increases then so would wool-intensive farms which would start breeding alpacas to grow abnormally bushy fur!. Stay with me!. This, in turn, would cause woollers to increase production and keep alpacas in smaller and smaller pens and eventually would be kept indoors to keep from infection from fly-strike, tail rot, and other ailments plaguing the wool industry!.
I know that you went to a farm and saw the happy alpacas roaming in the grass!. But you should be sure that the shearing practices are non-harming as well!. Have you ever seen a shorn alpaca!? Of course not, because it's beat up and bloodied from the shearing!. These freshly shaved animals are surely kept away from public view as they would cause people to turn away from the woolling biz!.
also most alpaca are grown to eventually become furs and skins for decorative blankets, carpets, and wall hangings!.
Although synthetic fiber manufacture includes the use of chemicals and petrol, I would still go for that!. But in reality I rarely buy these items either!. I usually buy cotton, hemp, or organic cotton materials!.
After all, I am vegan for animal-welfare first!. Environmental protection is a great thing, but I'm more concerned with animal exploitation and I am a skeptic of people keeping farm animals for any reason!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

well im unsure how certain farms are!.!.
certain ones like the one you visited are cruelty free!.!.
while others can be very bad where they cant afford good tools therefore cutting the alpaca or maybe they dont care!.
Maybe the employees enjoy *playing around* meaning torturing the poor animal!.
Better for the animal- choice 2
better for the environment-choice 1

I would opt for the alpaca!. They need to be sheered in the hot weather, and have no use for the wool!. I feel the same way about fresh, raw milk from my happy, pampered cow (Abigail), and eggs from well cared for hens (mine are Henabelle and Cheddar)-I consider them gifts!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Actually wool I'm a little more relaxed on, but honestly the best alternative would be hemp or bamboo clothing as both are voracious growers requiring no pesticides!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
