Depends on where they live!. In some in some places it would be impossible for a vegetarian or vegan to eat local most of the year unless they had there own heated greenhouse or a room full of freezers to stock up during the summer!.
Where I live they grow grain, canola, animals and a very few other crops that are only available in the summer!. Except for a few months in the summer all fruit and vegetables get shipped in from across the continent or even flown in from Australia or New Zealand!. All that travel could push a the vegan's footprint bigger than the vegetarian, probably not above the omnivore or it could be close!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The Omnivore has the largest carbon footprint since it takes 5 times as much land to feed him!. It's also harder for him to find his food locally, so more energy is used getting it to him!.
The Vegan has the smallest carbon footprint since no animal products are involved!.
Vegetarians fall in the middle somewhere!. since they eat eggs and dairy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You still missed out on several factors which can affect the "outcome"!. How far does each one have to drive!? How often do they use their car!? Do they have computers in their rooms!? If so, who uses it the most!? Where do they work!? Who has more electric appliances!? Who uses the blow dryer more for example!? Who uses more products packed in plastic!? Who wears more synthetics based clothing!? Are the fruits and veggies organic or massed produced fertilizer fed produce!? Who takes more baths and for how much time!? Who heats his/her room more often!? The list is almost endless!.
If you are going to judge by food alone, it would seem that the omni would be the guilty one, true!. But the then you would still have to consider many other factors such as food source (as mentioned above already), manner of cooking/preparation, amount consumed, what constitutes waste food ( do they eat the whole thing or discard most of it!?) and manner of waste disposal, etc etc etc!.
You cannot limit the factors to just food in any case as people live differently!. Vegetarians always say they should not be stereotyped!. To lump them all into the "good column" of the equation is stereotyping!. And what about vegetarians who eat mostly processed but vegetarian friendly foods such as bags of chips and canned veggies for example!? then you would have to consider the "footprint" of the manufacturer in the equation as well!. The same goes for vegans who say that their lifestyle is not limited to food but other factors as well!. You are not implying that vegans only eat and sleep and od nothing else are you!? Does the omni or veggie who buys his/her food by walking to the corner store have a bigger footprint than the vegan who drives 20 miles or more to the organic food store or farm!?
Perhaps the reason why it is not included in most articles is that is is really more complicated than your premise!. As I've said, stereotyping one group one way or the other may be a convenient way to arrive at a pre conceived result but it does make for a valid conclusion!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it depends!.!. you have to remember SOY isnt environmentally friendly either!.!. like from corporate farms who clear masses of land and displace or kill millions of animals!.!. and lets not forget the methods of processing soy!.!.!.
the one who leaves the SMALLEST carbon footprint is the one who grows some or all (yes even in apartment) of their own food!.!. or buys locally grown food!.!.!. and eats smaller food portions!.!.

It's not that simple, you need to look at other factors in their lives besides their diet (not to mention that some omnivores eat meat they've grown themselves)!.!.!.!.!.how much you commute, how much waste you go through, how much electricity you use, whether or not you recycle, how many new products you buy etc!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
A!. Omnivore - - they are ruining the planet, with their over use to land, waste of water and feeding the grians to the animals versus the thousands of poor straving people dying each year! - seen Africa lately!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Vegans have the smallest!. It takes more energy to raise livestock!. But, of course, there are much better things you can do!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Vegans!.
Because of all the different gasses the produce growers and middle men use to delay the rotting of their products!. These gasses are harming the ozone layer and morphing the foods they are used on!.
The extra diesel fuel used for the refrigerated equipment (trucks and trains) to cool the produce during transportation!.
This adds additional exhaust fumes to the air!. Remember, there are no plug ins for refrigeration during shipping!.
I can't breath from the gasses!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
