Answers:
Yes!. I know someone with two vegetarian dogs and they're very healthy and energetic!. Since dogs are omnivorous, they can be fed a balanced vegetarian diet!.

"An exclusively vegetarian diet of 'rice, lentils and organic vegetables every evening,' coupled with good exercise, has propelled 'Bramble' the Collie into her 28th year!. Guinness World Records is currently considering whether that makes her the oldest living dog in the world!."Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, because dogs are omnivores!. There are actually a variety of vegetarian dog foods out there!.!.!.!.
There is nothing that dogs need to live that cannot be derived from a vegetarian diet!.
That said, my dogs are not vegetarians!.!.!.!.while dogs CAN be fed a veg diet (with the guidance of a VET!!) it doesn't come as naturally to them as it can to us!. Some breeds of dogs are natural hunters and mine have even been known to take out a squirrel or two!.
EDIT: Here is a link to a site (Vegetarian Dogs!.com) that lists a few common questions and answers for people looking to start their dog on a veg diet!. I am NOT endorsing this, however, and I will again stress the need to consult a licensed veterinarian before changing your dog's diet in any way!.!.!.!.

Yes - but you have got to be REALLY careful to see that they get all their amino acids - usually you can compromise with feeding free range chicken eggs!. I am a vegan, and I did feed my dog a vegetarian diet for a while - she loved it, and thrived on it!. But when she got nasal cancer, I had to go back to feeding her meat because too many carbs can make cancer cells grow!. There are some books by vets that have good vegetarian, balanced diets in them!. It takes a lot of work to home cook!. I think some of the vegan web sites also offer information on commercially made vegetarian pet food, also!. The vets that talk about the veg!. diets say it can have the same benefits that it has for humans - weight loss, healthier heart, etc!. Again - to anyone reading this - be careful with it - research it - check it out with a vet before you do it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I don't think it's natural to expect a dog to be a vegan, but they can be if you want them to!.
My dog loves those morningstar meat analogue strips!. I don't like them because they feel like fat in my mouth!. But I get them for her because she loves them!.
I feed her dog food with chicken as it's first ingredient!. Alot of dogs eat dog food with just cornmeal and vegetables!. So, yeah, it's completely possible! :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've actually asked this same question several months ago and the answers I got were "no"!. So my input may not have much value, but here it is anyway:
IMHO, I personally believe they can, and have read that they can even thrive!. Refer to the sources listed for more information!. Of course, you'll have to look further into it than simply believing what you read at face value!. A high amount of protein is probably best, at any rate, but dogs can get plenty from lentils and peanut butter and beans and milk products, not just from animal protein!. I have relatives who own dogs, and they don't keep any meat in the house; yet their dogs have been all right!. Unfortunately I cannot speak from personal experience as I've never owned a dog, and admittedly most people I know that have dogs feed them meat!.
On the other hand, maybe I'm just brainwashed, but I like this paragraph from a section off of v-dogs!.com:
"Feeding a meat-free diet is realistic and can be beneficial for your dog, providing that all the essential nutrients required are provided!. One of the best ways to ensure this is to feed a properly balanced vegetarian dog food, formulated by specialist nutritionists!. V-dog has a long-standing reputation for making balanced, healthy meat-free dog foods!. These contain all the essential nutrients required to keep your pet in peak condition, without cruelty"
In any case, you should let your vet know if you have a dog and plan to put him/her on a veg diet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
