Vegan Problems?!
Im planning on becoming a Vegan this Monday!. Hopefully my family will listen to me and take me to the grocery store for once so I get the stuff I need!.
But I have a question about being Vegan!. I know the whole diet bit, but what about clothes!? My mom told me being Vegan is a bad idea, because if you want to be a ' Full ' vegan then you can't wear clothes that are made from animals, like jeans, sweats, etc!. and that it is really expensive finding things like shampoo, etc!.
Is this true!? Do you think being Vegan means following a dress code too!? Vegans: Do you just follow to diet, or the whole bit!?
Becaues I mean, when animals die ( themselves! NOT killing them! ) their fur is very useful!. That's is how clothes are made, they don't just shoot an animal so they can make a pair of jeans ( do they!?!? )!. Because I want to just follow the diet plan, but Im starting to feel a little guilty if im not really being a Vegan!. Do you think being Vegan requires using nothing from animals!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's very unfortunate that another answerer is using scare tactics and spreading false information about veganism!. Many people in India (and in other countries) have been vegan since birth and they're perfectly healthy!. I personally know several American vegan children who are very healthy!. The American Dietetic Association is one of the nation's leading nutrition experts and it supports vegan diets for all ages: "Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence!." http://eatright!.org/cps/rde/xchg/ada/hs!.!.!.!.

I get sick less frequently since I've become vegan, and my cholesterol levels are at a safer level now!. My doctor says I'm in excellent health and has no problems with my diet!. There's nothing in animal foods (besides artery-clogging cholesterol) that we can't get through plant-based diets!. Ask any educated, non-biased dietician and they will confirm this!.
Halal and kosher meats involve tremendous animal cruelty!. They're even worse than regular meat, because the slaughterhouses are exempt from humane regulations!. (I'm not making this up!. I took a course on animal law and that's what the professor said!.) To anyone who eats kosher meat, have you actually visited the slaughterhouses and seen how the animals are killed!? Various animal groups in Israel and in the US have done investigations of these slaugherhouses and found shocking animal welfare abuses!. You can see the videos for yourself online at http://www!.goveg!.com/kosher!.asp !.
I have friends who are Jewish and I respect Judaism!. Judaism has very powerful teachings about the proper treatment of animals!. I'd just encourage Jewish people to watch footage of kosher slaughterhouses and see whether they agree with it or not!.

Anyway, it's possible to have a vegan diet but not a vegan lifestyle!. For instance, people who just want the health benefits will often have a vegan diet but not necessarily buy man-made clothing, non-animal tested products, etc!.
I'd like to add that vegans DO wear jeans, sweats, etc!. because animals aren't killed for those products!. But fur involves a tremendous amount of suffering -- the animals are genitally electrocuted, stomped on, caught in traps, and even skinned alive!. also, it isn't too hard to buy cruelty free products!. Here's a list of companies that don't test on animals: http://www!.peta2!.com/STUFF/s-cf1!.asp
People who become vegan to reduce animal suffering often do have a vegan lifestyle!. But it's your decision to make!. You could take things gradually, and work on the lifestyle aspects in the future!. I wouldn't let your mom's comments prevent you from adopting a vegan diet!. Good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

That is not true!. Vegetarian and Vegan means that you don't eat animal meat!. It doesn't mean that you stay competely away from animals, unless you practice Jainism, or in some cases Hinduism!. You can wear whatever you want as a Vegan, just control your diet to not eating animal meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
You can be on a "Vegan Diet" where all you eat is vegan while still wearing animal products such as jeans or sweats!. I would suggest it i am on a vegan diet i feel way healthier then when i ate meat and other animal products!. Good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com
its going to be really hard if you still live at home with a bunch of people who are non-vegan, and im pretty sure that being vegan means that you dont eat or use anything that comes form animals!. its non-realistic to me but good luckWww@FoodAQ@Com
I wouldn't worry so much!. Just go ahead and buy your jeans!. You may be worried about animals being sacrificed, but you've GOT to put yourself first!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

When you make your own money and have your own freedom to buy whatever to you want, you can than go on to buying beautiful clothes that are not form animals!.
And generally animals are killed for their fur!. - people do not wait around for the animal to die!. they just kill them you should look it up online!.
By the way, I recommend that you be a vegetarian for a few months just so your body and way of eating gets use to the new and amazingly healthy ways!.

n!. A vegetarian who eats plant products only, especially one who uses no products derived from animals, as fur or leather!.
Vegans avoid using or consuming animal or animal by-products!. It is more than a diet!. Now that is according to the dictionary (as well as most vegans I know or have read books by)!.
HOWEVER,
when I became vegan I didn't throw out my clothing because that would have been wasteful!.
I also posted this question on Y! Answers to find out what other vegans did with their clothing!.
A lot believe in getting rid of your clothing to be a waste unless you donate it to charities!.
When I purchase clothing in the future, however, I buy vegan-friendly wares!.
There is a lot of abuse (both human and animal) that comes from the clothing we wear from the terrible unsanitary shavings for wool in Australia to the miserable treatment of people (some times children) who make that clothing for us to wear!.
Grats to you for going vegan!. As for the clothing, I say do what you can!. Anything you do will help!. Do your best with what you have- do the right thing because when you have to think "is this wrong or right!?" you must know what is wrong for right for you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, no animals!.
Most clothes are made from plants, so you pretty much have to avoid things that are obviously animal!. Fake leather is a good substitute i believe!. some clothes, though use discreet stuff, like sinew!. Look in the labels, most shirts and some pants are things like cotton blends or pure cotton!. Some dyes, though, do use things from animals!.
A lot of shampoo actually doesnt contain animal parts!. If it does, its probably just fat!. Research it by finding popular shampoos and looking up the ingredients on Wikipedia or such!.
If youre just starting Vegan, though, im sure you can start off easy, and get used to it a bit!. If you are having serious second thoughts, i recommend not doing it, or just go plain vegitarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would ask to speak to your doctor regarding the Vegan diet!. I have been vegan for two months now and I feel absolutely wonderful!. I've lost 30 lbs in that time and I feel great!.
But it is a lifestyle that can be very difficult, especially when you are surrounded with non-vegans!. You are not just making changes that are going to affect you; your choices are going to affect your whole family!. That's something you need to consider!.
The other day I was out to dinner with my parents, and this was the first time I've eaten with them since becoming vegan!. The restaurant was not very vegan-friendly, so I spent a lot of time trying to find something I could eat!. So, this is a big change for you; you have to make sure you're ready to do it!.
With regards to your question about clothes and other products!.!.!.I think who point of being a vegan is to not use any products that are taken from an animal that is being treated poorly!. I second the suggestions to visit sites like caringconsumer!.com to see what you can use!.
The ultimate goal of veganism is to stop animal cruelty, and your dollars are a way of facilitating that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Jeans don't have any animal derived materials, I don't think!. Your quite a bit wrong on the fur!. They kill the animals long before it is sick or dying!. They electrocute them, poison them, suffocate them!. It isn't that hard to avoid fur!. Just check the tag!. It will tell you what it is made with!. By the way, Angora rabbit fur is no different than rabbit fur except the regular rabbit hair requires death while the angora rabbit hair requires torture!. It really isn't hard to dress vegan!. It is much less expensive!. They have some cheap vegan beauty products!. Check out http://www!.beautywithoutcruelty!.com/, or caringconsumer!.com for items that are not made with animals, tested on animals or unnatural!. I think it means animal-free!. It could be a gradual thing for you!. Maybe get rid of your leather one week, stop wearing fur another week, buying new organic shampoo another week!.!.!.!. you get where I am going!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
well there are 2 reasons to be vegan!.
1) The numerous health benefits from a well balanced vegan diet
2) The moral side, in other words feeling bad for animals
I have been vegan for about 12 years, purely for health reasons though!. Over time however i would start to lean alot on the moral side, so i guess now i am both! I strictly follow the vegan diet, and after a while instead of buying leather shoes, i would try some fabric ones!.
so truly, the reasons for being vegan is your decision!. you could eat the vegan way and still wear leather clothes and be considered vegan!. Conversely not many people will consider you vegan if you eat cow and pig, but dont use leather!.
the vegan dress code is not as strict as the diet!. And jeans are not made from animals nor are sweat pants!. Leather, silk and wool are the main clothing material that comes from animals, so your cotton shirt and jeans are still fine!.
do not feel guilty about wearing a leather belt or something!. i am wearing one right now!. yes its is an animals skin around my waist, but it is not detrimental to my health
FOLLOW THROUGH! most "vegan newbies" will stop after only a month!
make sure your diet is rich in whole grains, tofu, nuts, seeds, LOTS OF VEGETABLES, fresh fruits, and soy products! the first door opens as soon as you say to yourself "im a vegan"!. SOOOOO many doors will open up along the way! its awesome!

Yes they do just kill animals to produce clothes, and a lot of the time they skin the animals alive!. By reading your question I have come to the conclusion, that though its great that you want to be vegan, you dont know enough to do so!. You need to read and understand what the lifestyle is all about!. You do not eat any animal products or animal by products, or use them!. There are many different idealogies when it comes to veganism, you need to develope your own ideas too, for instand I dont buy new leather goods but I will buy them second hand because I believe in reusing and recycling!. Please read into what being vegan is all about and what you need to do it healthy!.
also get some books that tell you animal friendly companies that you can buy from! there are tons out there!.
Being vegan means you use nothing from animals!
Thats the ideaology, if you dont think you can do it then dont, its hard work, just try being the best vegetarian you can be!.
also I wanted to let you know that there are tons of things that are vegan that you might be shocked are!. look up "I can't believe its vegan" and it reassures you that it is possible!.
Good luck!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

This is your choice about taking the vegan lifestyle "all the way!." You do realize that you can't be 100% vegan!.!.!.from what I understand, even water is processed through animal products (bone char I believe!.!.!.I know that's used for refining sugar)!. Sometimes your choices are made by circumstances (living with parents)!. Do what you can do!. Go to Whole Foods, if you're able, they have a Whole Foods brand shampoo and conditioner that are vegan and really inexpensive!. You can also offer to BUY your own vegan stuff if your parents are not willing to!.
PETA has a list of companies that produce vegan and/or cruelty free products!. Just go to their website!.
also, don't buy the "veganism is bad" comments in this thread!. My MD!.!.!.yes!.!.!.my PHYSICIAN is vegan, as well as her husband!. And she has no concerns about my vegan diet of 10 years!. I get a blood test each year to check iron levels, etc!., because of my own paranoia (not hers)!. And, oh, I'm an elite athlete who's won a couple of national titles (so you don't need to have your mouth wrapped around a turkey leg to be a successful, healthy athlete)!.
You don't need to take "tons of supplements!." Yes, it's wise to take a multivitamin, even meat eaters should take one!. And eat a wide variety of foods of course!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Jeans and most clothing is not made from animals!. There might be a few processes that involve a product that was derived from animals, but most clothes are made of cotton!. Others are made from synthetic fibers like polyester that are derived from petroleum (that used to be animals millions of years ago)!.
If you want to eat more healthfull that is good, but following a popular trend doesn't mean you are doing that much good for yourself!. Vegans have a good idea, but I think they take it way too far!. You are correct, they strive to only use plant products not animal products!. So everything vegan or vegan friendly has nothing to do with animals in their production!.
To me it sounds like your parents are trying to dissuade you from vegan lifestyle by making sound unattractive!. That is manipulative and wrong, but if they pay for the food then you will have pick your battles!.
also, you shouldn't just decide that Monday is the day to become Vegan!. You should start easing yourself into a all vegitable diet!. In fact, it sounds more like you just want to eat healthy and minimize animal cruelty!. Vegans believe that all animals are somewhat poisonous to eat and the things we have done to food are bad for us!. Such as genetic modification, chemical perservatives, artificial flavorings, and unnatural processes our food is put through!.
However, they take it too far by getting rid of animal products that are obtained without cruelty or killing!. Mostly, dairy products!.
Human beings are omnivores!. Which means we eat a variety of foods (plants and animals)!. Vegetables have a little protein, simple sugars, fiber, and trace vitamins and minerals!. Meat has a lot of protein which are the building blocks of your body!. Too much meat can make a person fat, slow, and in poor health yet nourished!. Too much vegetables can help a person maintain a healthy weight, detoxify the body, but can cause excess gas (Vegans have terrible gas)!. We need both meat and vegetables for our bodies to get everything they need!. The key is to find a balance as with all things in life!. Too much meat can make a person fat, but too much vegetables can make a person gassy!. If you find a balance you will minimize the uncomfort or effect your diet has on your life!.
I'm not telling you that you are wrong!. In fact, vegetable diets are better for your health, but vegetarians have a better plan than vegans!. They incorporate protein sources from animals like dairy!. also vegetables have little nourishment compared to meat so you will notice that you actually eat more once time has passed!.
Do yourself a favor and get some unbiased information on alternate diets, and learn what it takes to keep your body running!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It means using nothing from animals but you can choose to just follow the diet!. I should warn you though!. Being a vegan is very very dangerous!. You will have to take suppliments like crazy (and the less you have to take the better!. Especially vitamines that are fat soluble because they can build up in your liver as toxins)!. You body is not meant for this kind of life style!. Be prepared to get sick a lot because you need certain enzymes in meat that you cannot get from other substances!.
If this is because you are into not killing animals!. Then think about how animals kill animals!. It's part of the circle of life!. No matter what you are killing something!. Even if you're a vegitarian!.
At such a young age this is especially dangerous because your body needs certain foods to grow and devlope properly!. If you are going to choose this life style at least wait until you are an adult!.
also gaining weight is a huge problem!.
Ok apparently some people are really immature and like to say "don't listen to so and so!." That's rude!.
But anyway!. Yes people have been vegan in other countries for a very long time!. Actually in India though they have some of the best meat!. But each ethnicity is different!. You have to take into account your own individual genetics!. Are you Indian!? Your body may not be able to handle this!. You also need to take into account the fact that whether you like it or not you are living in an American lifestyle!. The foods that are ok for vegans to eat here are still Americanized goods!. We are not in India!. also India has a starvation problem so that's crap anyway!.
I come from a family of doctors who have talked to me about this and I am an IB Biology student!. I've also studied this on my own!.
Bring on the thumbs down!. It's science!. Sorry!.
PS: If you are into stopping animal cruelty (which is a GOOD thing) then you can buy meats that are Hallal and Cosher!. The animals have to be killed a certain way (that is quick) and humain!. And, they have to be treated in a certain way!.
PPS: I am not using scar tactics!. I have no reason to!. I don't care if someone is vegan or not that is there choice!. I have Indian friends as well!. Big deal!. I also have Muslim friends and Jewish friends (I'm Jewish) and we specifically have kosher meat for a reason and I don't appreciate anyone telling me disrectful things about it!. I know what I'm eating!.
Again it's science not scar tactics!. Some things are scary!. So is nature!.
also there is a lot of clothing that does not use animals!. bamboo and etc!.!.!. Sahali (sorry spelling) has lots of clothes that are pretty Vegan friendly!.
I'm not trying to be mean!. Do take it that way!. I just went into nutrition because I would feel wrong not saying the risks!. You will know what is best for you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
