As the last person posted, "Becoming Vegan" is one of the best books out there!. It helped me quite a bit when I started out!. It has solid info on all the vitamins and minerals you need and how to get them, and how to eat a balanced diet in general!. And if you haven't found it already vegweb!.com is a great site for recipes and other info!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I think you should stay vegetarian for at least a year before attempting to become a vegan!.
Or at the very least, mix and match vegetarian and vegan meals!.
I can’t suggest any particular book but the following are both excellent websites with hundreds of vegan recipes:

Enjoy!

It's great that you're interested in having a vegan diet!
Some good books are:
-Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet
-Vegan Freak: Being Vegan in a Non-Vegan World
-Vegan with a Vengeance : Over 150 Delicious, Cheap, Animal-Free Recipes That Rock
I'm not sure about good cookbooks for teens, but here's a vegan recipe site with tons of easy recipes: http://www!.chooseveg!.com/vegan-recipes!.a!.!.!.
Since your family thinks it's expensive, you could show them this site!.!.!. it has a long list of cheap vegan meal ideas: http://www!.tryveg!.com/cfi/toc/!?v=07budge!.!.!.
There's no right or wrong way to make the switch!. You could spend a month or more gradually transitioning!. You could replace one product at a time!. (Find a good non-dairy milk to replace cow's milk!. Then find a good non-dairy cheese to replace the cheese in your diet!.!.!.!. etc)
I stopped eating eggs first, because the cruelty is (arguably) the worst in the egg industry!. Then I took out milk, yogurt, etc!. but kept eating cheese and cheese pizza!. Finally, I replaced the cheese in my diet with soy cheese!.
I hope this helps!Www@FoodAQ@Com

"Animal Liberation" by Peter Singer
"Vegan Freaks" by Bob & Jenna Torres
"Making a Killing" by Bob Torres
The film Earthlings is also an effective way to motivate yourself to go and stay vegan!. (:
As for cookbooks for the inexperienced, I highly recommend the "Student's Go Vegan! Cookbook" by Carole Raymond!. Quick, inexpensive, easy, and delicious vegan recipes await you!. Vegweb!.com also has tons of recipes, for the beginner cooks and the more experienced!.
Personally, I think it's much easier to stop eating animal products all at once!. After watching Earthlings, you'll have a hard time eating animal products again!. When you know how much you're helping the environment, your body, and most importantly, the animals, it's hard to go back to eating animal products!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
