Vegan with pets?!

Question: Vegan with pets!?
I am new to being vegetarian!. I am not planning on being vegan but I want to know all the facts!. My brother has always made fun of people that claim to be vegan that have pets and he said that vegan people don't believe in having pets!. What is the truth!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Vegans can have pets if they want to!. I am vegan and I have my sweet keets and I love them so much!.

Certain people who belong to Peta and go way too far with things say you shouldn't have pets!. It is their opinion that breeding animals for pets is wrong and they are right to an extent!.

If you are vegan for the animal rights aspect of veganism, I would definately only adopt dogs and cats though!. Most pet store puppies are bred in puppy mills!. When people buy a puppy from a pet store, 2 dogs die in a shelter when there are no homes for them!.

With cats it's a little different!. The shelters and humane societies are loaded with homeless cats and kittens who need homes!.

There are also pure breed dog and bunny rescues if that is your cup of tea!.!.!.

Don't listen to your brother!. Tell him that people can do whatever they want and point out that he is no way perfect!. Good luck and take care!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sure vegans can have pets!.

Vegetarian Dogs and Cats:
*******************************
Many vegetarians and vegans feed healthful, meatless diets to their companion animals!. One remarkable example is that of Bramble, a border collie whose vegan diet of rice, lentils, and organic vegetables contributed to a nearly record-breaking lifespan of at least 27 years!. Studies have shown that the ailments associated with meat consumption in humans—such as allergies, various types of cancer, and kidney, heart, and bone problems—also affect many nonhumans!.The nutritional needs of dogs and cats can be met with a balanced vegan diet and certain supplements!.

Some people wonder if it’s “unnatural” to omit meat from the diet of a dog or cat!. Animals in the wild commonly eat quite a lot of plant matter!. Besides, to feed them the meat that they would naturally eat, you would have to serve them whole mice or birds or allow them to hunt for themselves, an option that is unfair to native species of birds and other small animals, since companion cats and dogs have been removed from the food chain and have advantages that free-roaming animals lack!. Vegetarian or vegan dogs and cats enjoy their food and good health, and a vegetarian diet for your companion animal is ethically consistent with animal rights philosophy!.

What PETA says:
********************
If you are concerned about your companion animals’ health and about the cruelty of the meat industry, now is the time to stop buying meat-based commercial pet food!. Feeding companion animals commercial pet foods may be jeopardizing their health!. Supermarket pet foods are often composed of ground-up parts of animals that U!.S!. Department of Agriculture inspectors have deemed unfit for human consumption!. The flesh of animals who fall into one of the categories of the four D’s—dead, dying, diseased, or disabled—is what often goes into pet food!. One Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specialist says that the unrendered protein in food may come from heads, feet, viscera, and other animal parts!. Many of these animals have died of infections and other diseases!. Pet food has also been recalled during mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), outbreaks because of the risk that contaminated meat might have been processed into the food!. One deputy commissioner states that cats in particular “are susceptible to BSE!.”Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, vegans can have pets but there are some vegans who don't believe in having pets and that all animals believe in animals!. It's hard to explain since I do not believe in this!.

I don't understand how someone can make a choice like becomming vegan if they do not believe in having animals!. I mean how can you say you love animals and want to save their lives if you've never had an animal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If your depending upon a def!. found on a website to determine if you should or shouldn't have pets - you shouldn't have them!.

Seems that you have an approach no different than mine - hands on!. The fact that your pets are rescues says many positive things about you personally!. You practice what you believe!.

Don't allow others to determine who and what you are and your beliefs!. Stand up and live the life that you know that you need to live!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Umm, no your brother is totally wrong!. Vegan means you dont use eat anything from animals ( sometimes you dont even use animal products ) because you dont believe in hurting animals!. Your not hurting an animal by taking are of it, Im a vegetarian ( vegan someday:) ) and I have had atlesst 1 dog my whole life!.
Your not hurting them by feeding them, playing, and haivng fun with them!. If you were abusing them it would be a different story!. Tell your brother he needs to do some research before he tells you what he thinks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There is nothing cruel or unethical about having pets if you are a responsible pet owner!. Just make sure not to get a dog from a puppy mill!.

As far as your pet's diet, I personally would not try to turn a carnivorous animal, such as a cat, into a vegan!. Dogs are omnivores though, so they should be fine without meat!.

EDIT: That's great!. Definitely don't let your bro make you feel bad about that!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Only hard core PETA type vegans don't believe in owning pets!. The way I feel is humans made wild dogs and cats into pets over 1,000's of years, so we have a responsibility towards them!. My only advice would be to stay away from pet stores and get your pets form animal rescue shelters!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Dogs teeth are pointed because they are carniverous, please dont get one if you intend to not feed it meat, I wouldnt ask you to compromise your ethics, but people who feed there dogs vegetables might as well be feeding them toilet paper, dogs dont forage for veg in the wild!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Some extreme vegans might think that way!. Pets is an ugly word though!.!.I prefer the term animal companion!. Dogs are not carnivores!.!.they are omnivores!. Cats are carnivores!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think your brother is either trying to kid you or is misinformed!. I'm vegan and have many pets!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

um no
ur brother is just teasing you

-- vegetarian for 4 yearsWww@FoodAQ@Com

noo, your brother is lying to you!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Most of the vegans I know have companion animals!. We'd be extremely unlikely to have exotics, since many of them are trapped in the wild and not suited for living in human homes!. But cats and dogs, especially, have evolved along with humans and over the millenia we've formed deep bonds with them!. Most vegans I know would not consider buying a dog or cat from a pet store or breeder, but would adopt one from a shelter or breed rescue!. Veganism seeks to eliminate the exploitation of animals!. I have a dog who I consider a treasured member of my family; to me, the relationship is mutually beneficial, not exploitative!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well it's great you rescued your animals!. So as long as you rescue every time you want animals thats OK, better than supporting crappy puppy mills and other pet stores!.
Its a shame at all people have become obsessed with having animals at all nowadays!. So many are used as "Pets" and most don't belong in cages or raised wrong in someones home!. It's not natural for any!. They look happy with thier owners, but its weird because its not thier true nature!. :\Www@FoodAQ@Com
