How can I ensure the cows have a good life when choosing dairy?!
As an example, free range eggs are available!. I know organic only technically refers to the food they are fed!. Does anyone know if there is a cheese company that only uses milk from good situations!? I live in Canada!.
PS!. I've tried vegan this past month and just thinking about eating another ounce of soy cheese makes me nautious!. Cheese is the one thing I really miss!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would say cows do have a good life but it's subjective so the argument will never end and some people will never be happy!. I say they have a good life because the dairyman is looking to maximize his production, just like any business!. If his cows are distressed, ill, or generally uncomfortable production declines and he will work to find out what the problem is so he can recover!.
For instance, did you know cows have waterbeds!? Some dairies use them because they have discovered the cows rest better between milkings on a waterbed rather then just standing around or lying down on dirt or cement!. There are also misting systems to keep the barns cool, fans, scratching posts, and all sorts of things meant to keep the cows comfortable!.
And as far as turning them to beef at the end of their lives!.!.!.!.any of you same people with a problem with that support putting grandpa out of his misery when he's too old to use the bathroom anymore!? Some people are and I say that is truly B!.S!.
Anyway, to more directly answer your question, see if you can find a small dairy (cows, goats, water buffalo, whatever) near you that produces it's own cheese!. You could visit and see firsthand exactly what is going on behind the scenes!. The quality is probably going to be great too!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why are you eating so much soy cheese!? I can't stand the stuff so I rarely eat it, blah!. If it's calcium you're worried about, there's plenty in soy milk, nuts, greens, etc!.
I'm sure there are some farms in your local area that sell dairy!. You can look them up in the yellow pages and then ask them if they can show you around!. This is a good way to see what kind of life the cows lead!.
I have a link that has a listing of compassionate, local farms when you put in your zip code but I'm not sure if it works for Canada!. Give it a try anyway: http://www!.sustainabletable!.org/Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't think there is such a thing as a good situation!. In the end, cows are still slaughtered for meat when they no longer can produce milk and male calves are still sold to the veal industry!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Don't worry about the cows - farmers pay huge amounts of money for them and take very good care of them to get the largest amount of milk possible!. It is very very rare for a milk giving cow to be abused or not taken care of!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
