Soy milk vs. lactose-free milk (lactaid)?!

Question: Soy milk vs!. lactose-free milk (lactaid)!?
I was born with galactosemia!. I always thought that I could only drink soy milk until someone said to me that I could also drink lactose-free milk!. I am not sure and do not want to risk it, but I do wonder!. I know its a dumb question since I should know the difference but I don't!. (PLEASE NO MEAN ANSWERS, ITS JUST A QUESTION THAT I WOULD LIKE ANSWERED WITHOUT OUT ANYONE SAYING RUDE THINGS) Thanx!!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Here's what I know (not much): galactose is a monosaccharide ("single sugar"), which, when combined with glucose, forms lactose, aka 'milk sugar' (a disaccharide - "two sugars")!. Galactosemia is an inability of the liver to digest galactose - since lactose is made from galactose, you therefore have a type of lactose intolerance!. Lactose-free milks, as far as I know, are used by lactose-intolerant people!.!.!. BUT I wouldn't recommend you trying anything before consulting with your doctor or a nutritionist!. Here's a link I found that might help you out a little http://www!.nichd!.nih!.gov/publications/pu!.!.!.

I thought I might also throw in a suggestion re: non-dairy milks (I'm vegan, so lots of experience with non-dairy stuff!)!. Almond milk is delicious, and if you get the unsweetened variety, it has only 40 calories per cup!. It's also very high in vitamin E, which is itself an antioxidant!. I know that 'Blue Diamond' makes a really good almond milk!.!.!. I like the unsweetened vanilla, but the chocolate is really good too!. If you aren't worried about calories, go for the regular types - they're still lower in calories than soy milk!. I find it has a smoother, richer taste than soy milk!. There are other types of non-dairy milks that are good as well, like rice milk, oat milk, and hemp milk (haven't tried that one)!.

I know that even if dairy is lactose-free, it still contains other substances that are harmful (hormones especially)!. Plus, the dairy industry is really cruel!. But enough about that, it wasn't part of your question!.!.!. I just thought I'd throw in my two cents :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

soy is actually healthier, and humans aren't really even supposed to consume milk or any dairy products!. I suggest soy!. you also have less of a chance of getting mad cow disease, and some types of cancer!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Ask your doctor!. It's not worth the risk when it is so easy to check!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
