Answers:
Vegetarians don't eat animals or slaughter byproducts!. My general rule is that if it was ever alive I don't eat it!. If it's made by something that was alive I will!. I don't eat steak, I do drink milk!. Eggs are never fertalized and therefore will never live, so I eat them!. However I only eat cage free eggs because of the living conditions of caged chickens!.
Fish, clams, shrimp, etc are all animals!. If you eat them you are not vegetarian!.
The hardest bit, and the part the requires more research, is the 'slaughter byproduct' bit!. It's easy to see that hamburger is meat!. It's less easy to see that skittles, starbursts, junior mints and gummy bears killed animals!. also many yogurts, Jello, some gums!. They all contain gelatin!.It's ground up joints, cartalidge and other bits from animals!.
Other things to look out for:
Check cheese for rennet (from the stomach lining of cows!.)
Check all soups for broth - many use beef or chicken, even in things like 'vegetable' soup!. At many rices too!. And most Hostess products have beef fat!.
It's not food, but I personally also avoid leather and candles made with tallow!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The most common type of vegetarian is lacto-ovo vegetarian!. This means that you don't eat meat but still eat eggs and dairy!.
Next there are pescetarians, which are people who eat no meat except for fish!.
There are also ovo-vegetarians, which means you don't eat dairy or meat but still eat eggs!.
Finally, we have vegans, which exclude all animal products!. This includes meat, eggs, dairy and honey as well!. Those are the "strict vegetarians" you were talking about that don't eat anything related to animals :)
All types of vegetarians are great, and it really doesn't matter which one you are!. The decision is up to you! Don't let anybody scold you because you aren't "strict" enough!.
All three vegetarians also do not eat gelatin, which is included in most candies!. Gelatin is derived from collagen found in the bones, cartilage, connective tissue, and skin of animals, traditionally cows!. Gelatin is in jello, gummy bears/worms, marshmallows and sometimes even potato salad!. Always read the labels!
Hope I helped and good luck :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Those are called vegans!.
Vegans won't eat anything that could potentially be an animal!.!.!. I!.e!. Eggs, milk, cheese etc!.
There aren't any rules about being a vegetarian!.!.!. It is a decision you make, so you can eat anything you want really!.!.!. It is just you have decided not to eat meat!. Some vegetarians eat only white meat (chicken, turkey, fish), whereas some vegetarians don't eat any kind of meat, or eggs (because they are a potential life)!.
I would not worry so much about being a "correct vegetarian" or anything!.!. There are no rules about it! Its a PERSONAL DECISION!. You, and only you make the "rules" about what you can and cannot eat!.
I would just warn you to be careful when eating products like chips etc!. If you don't know what something is, look it up!.!.!
For example, worcester sauce is a meat sauce!.!.!.! and it is in many more everyday foods than you would think!. Gelatine is a meat product!.
Always check when going to restaurants if there are any meat products in what you are ordering!. You'd be surprised!.!.!.
Personally, i'm not a vegetarian!.!. But good on you for making a choice!.
Good luck!
Oh, and remember, you need to get your iron from somewhere!.!.!. Please be careful and get supplements if you need them!. Don't get sick!!!
