My daughter was looking at "Vegetarian eggs" in egg cartons at the grocery store. Explanation please!
Answers:
It simply means that the hens were fed a vegetarian grain based diet, which is usually high in soy, corn and wheat!. Although it SOUNDS like a good thing, free ranging hens would be eating bugs and worms, so it really means that the hens are confined to cages-not a good thing, since disease runs rampid among caged hens, so they are routinely give antibiotics, steroids and other medications in their feed-all of which pass into the egg, and into those who eat the eggs!. Your best bet for good eggs would be to find a local source of free range, organically raised hens, which would not have been pumped full of medications and growth hormones, All this effort to make things sound healthier is really just a cover up and sales ploy, if you dig a little deeper!. Its pretty pathetic what goes on in the food industry, and quite disturbing when you learn about it!. "Vegetarian" is one of those labels that has no restrictions on it and so doesn't really mean anything (similar to "farm fresh")!.
Most of the time brands which use this label are implying that their hens are treated "humanely" and are "free-range"!. However, due to their being no policing of the label!.!.!. this is not necessarily true!.
Contrary to what the label suggests,"vegetarian" labeled eggs still involve the killing of sentient beings!. This is because the egg industry considers birds to be "productive units"!. As such birds which are not "profitable" are killed: including males or older birds!.
also, you are right to be confused: technically all eggs are vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
