If they come from free range hens!?

Here's some information about "free range" eggs:
http://www!.cok!.net/lit/freerange!.php

Basically:
-The "free range" label is often used deceptively!. A farm can cram hens into windowless sheds!. If there is a single, narrow opening leading to an enclosure, the eggs can be labeled "free range"!. The vast majority of free range hens never even go outside!.

-Male chicks are useless to the egg industry (since they don't produce eggs)!. On free range hatcheries, the male chicks are thrown into high-speed grinders while still alive or are suffocated in trash bags!.

-All hens, even on free range farms, are slaughtered when their production rates decline!. I know a former free range egg farmer who told me that she had to slaughter the hens every 15 months because that is typically when they stop producing so many eggs!.

I do think free-range farming is so much better than factory farming!. At least there are no battery cages!. At the same time, free range doesn't mean cruelty-free!.

EDIT: I would eat eggs if I had my own chickens, because then I could ensure that they were treated well and weren't slaughtered after they stopped producing so many eggs!. But ALL commercial egg farms slaughter the unproductive hens and kill the males!.

Here's a video of hens rescued from a free range egg farm:
http://peacefulprairie!.blogspot!.com/2007!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

"Free range" means, literally, NOTHING!. There is NO legal definition, so producers are free to use the term as so much greenwashing!. Hens are NOT treated fine, they are treated like commodities!. And their male offspring are treated like garbage, because that's what they are considered!. Nearly 50% of all the chicks born to a laying operation (i!.e!. nearly all the males) are killed as soon as they are sexed, either by being ground up alive or by being suffocated!. Laying hens are starved and kept in constant darkness when their egg production slows; it's a process called forced moulting and it's meant to jumpstart egg production!. When that no longer works, spent hens are slaughtered for nuggets!. This happens in ALL egg operations, "free range" or otherwise, and all of this is on top of the horrors of battery cages!. "Free range" hens *may* have a few minutes access to the outdoors each day, but they DO spend the rest of their lives indoors in cramped, often caged, situations!. They DO have their beaks seared off with a hot knife to keep them from pecking each other to death from the stress!. And it is one of the cruelest animal foods industries there is!. Poultry is exempt from the Humane Slaughter Practices Act, also, so there is no legal requirement to even attempt humane slaughter; the law has deemed them something less even than animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Unless you can actually see the conditions in which the hens are kept, you cannot possibly know that the hens are treated "fine!." "Free-range" is just so much greenwashing!. Animals kept on free-range farms are not given much better treatment than animals kept on conventional farms!. And once an animal's productivity declines, she is typically killed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

its because its from an animal and its not the point that the free ranged chickens are allowed 2 run around its the principle of not eatin anythin from an animal!. ive just turned vegan and people keep on sayin why wont you have milk because its not harmin the cow because if you didnt milk the cow it would die!. but its just the principle of not eatin anythin from an animal!. well thats why i dont eat it because i think its appalin 2 do it!. thats just my opinion and i dont judge people who eat meat e!.t!.c its just i think its wrong = ]Www@FoodAQ@Com

even though the chickens are supposedly "free range" the eggs still come from an animal, which goes against the beliefs of a vegan!. free range chickens are not much different from any other chicken, minus all the hormones!. its practically just as badWww@FoodAQ@Com

For whatever reason that specific person chooses not to consume eggs!.!.!.!.just becomes were all pushed into the same catagory word does not mean we all have the same reasons for everything we choose to do!.

And the "free range" term is getting crueler and crueler!. Don't be brainwashed into that load of crap!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Pretty much the same reason!.
Hens are kept in horrible conditions, just to lay eggs!.
I did a project on it, so to everyone whos saying they are kept in good conditions, they're wrong!. And, eggs come from hens, and vegans don't eat ANY animal product what so ever!.

EDIT: To the girl above me, no it won't!. The eggs aren't feralized!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Simple answer, because it's an animal product!.

However, I quit eating eggs because, unless it is a chicken coop in someone's backyard, the hens are not "treated fine!." Other answerers have already supplied you with information on that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

nothing to do with the living conditions of the chickens at all !. eggs come from a living animal/bird therefore not eaten by a vegan or anything containing egg, Vegans will not eat wearor use anything with an animal origin!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans are pretty strict!. I stopped eating eggs but if I knew a person or raised chickens myself then I might use the eggs because chickens will produce eggs and they might rot if they aren't taken away!. Same thing goes for milk!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

They don't want to eat anything that COMES FROM ANIMALS as well as animal meat!. Since eggs come from hens, they don't eat them!.
Some vegans don't just become one because of animal rights!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

"Free range" is a big load of bull!.

http://www!.upc-online!.org/freerange!.htmlWww@FoodAQ@Com

i am a total vegetarian and do not eat eggs, the reason being i do not like it!. that is all!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

even if the chickens are free range they are still animals and they lay eggs, of course the eggs come from an animal but vegans don't eat any animals or animal produceWww@FoodAQ@Com

Vegetarians will partake in eating dairy products, while vegans do not believe in eating anything that comes from an animal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

cause vegans don't eat anything from animals!.
meaning they don't even wear leather shoes cause its made from cow!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

They are from animals!. Vegans eat stuff that is not from animals and besides an egg is just a baby animal growing!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because those who follow the vegan lifestyle do not consume any animal products!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because it comes FROM an animal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

because eventually it will be an animalWww@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans are vegan for many different reasons!. Some think it's good for the environment, some think it's good for their health, some think (like me) that you shouldn't be apart of an institution that is cruel/kills animals!. But as you are implying that free range = FREE RANGE then I'm afraid you are mistaken!. I am going to assume you are young and haven't really read up on the subject; basically, Government rules on free range are abysmal!. If you live in the UK you'll find lots of butchers/health food shops that will sell "Real" free range eggs!. I don't trust them myself, but it would be a step in the right direction - if you really want to help the animals, take a quick drive into the country and there will be literally tens of small farms within 5 miles who'll be selling eggs - talk to the farmers and check if they send their chickens off to be slaughtered (in tiny vans with no a/c in the summer, and no heating in the winter), or if they kill the hens on site - which may sound harsh, but is both financially viable for them, and A LOT more humane for the hens!.

I apologies for the length of the post!.

If anyone is still reading:
Can I just say that I've been vegan for 4yrs now and I only had enough patience to read up to "Orange" because frankly, the other questions made my blood boil!. Everyone from "Heaven Lee" to "Greek lettering girl" ( ;) ) should be ashamed of themselves!. Greek Lettering Girl actually attempted to explain, but the rest were just lame answers!.

It's like they have no understanding about the reasons why vegan's make their choices!.

If you can't READ and ANSWER the question, don't post! I say READ the question, because the guy said he'd been veggie, so he knows the definition of a (beep)ing vegan! This isn't dictionary corner!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm veggie and I accept the fact that vegans choose not to eat eggs!. However there have been some mis-informed individuals who need to do more research before making such choices!.

Eggs are not fertilised unless there's a cockeral within the flock!. Therefore you're not eating embryo's when consuming eggs!. Perhaps their parents didn't have a birds and the bees chat with them when they were younger!?

I keep hens for their eggs and they make brilliant pets too!. I know what they're eating and that they are taken great care of and have lots of room to roam, run and flap!. Before then I used to go to a local farm for eggs and you can see that they're kept in good conditions and have luscious green fields to scratch away in!. I think perhaps labelling all 'free-range' egg farmers as cruel liars, look in your local area, go to a free-range egg farm and see for yourself instead of generalising and poo-pooing what could potentially be a good step forward towards animal welfare whilst allowing farmers to make a living!. It's not there yet but things like this don't happen overnight!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There is no inspection system for companies that label their eggs “free-range!.”

The popular myth that “free-range” egg-laying hens enjoy fresh grass, bask in the sunlight, scratch the earth, sit on their nests, and engage in other natural habits is often just that: a myth!. In many commercial “free-range” egg farms, hens are crowded inside windowless sheds with little more than a single, narrow exit leading to an enclosure, too small to accommodate all of the birds at once!.

Both battery cage and “free-range” egg hatcheries kill all male chicks shortly after birth!. Since male chicks cannot lay eggs and are different breeds than those chickens raised for meat, they are of no use to the egg industry!. Standard killing methods, even among “free-range” producers, include grinding male chicks alive or throwing them into trash bags and leaving them to suffocate!.

Whether kept in sheds or cages, laying hens—who can naturally live more than ten years—are considered “spent” when they are just one or two years old and their productivity wanes!. Rather than being retired, “free-range” hens are slaughtered to make room for another shed of birds!.

With no federal regulations overseeing the use of animal welfare claims on egg cartons, misleading or exaggerated claims are rampant!. Consumers may be deceived by phrases such as “animal-friendly” or “naturally-raised,” which can be found on cartons of eggs from caged hens!. Read about COK’s truth in labeling campaign urging the U!.S!. Food and Drug Administration to require the full disclosure of production methods on eggs cartons sold nationwide!.

Granted, living in cramped conditions is better than living in even more cramped conditions!. Laying hens who have 67 square inches of space per bird likely suffer less than those who have only 50, and giving even 10 out of 10,000 turkeys access to sunlight and the outdoors is better than denying all of them such basic needs!. But, clearly, commercial "free-range" farming is not the answer to ending animal abuse!.

As with factory-farmed animals, “free-range” animals can be subjected to the same physical mutilations without painkillers and are still sent to the same slaughterhouses as their factory-farmed relatives at a young age when their “productivity” wanes!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because in there brains a chemical is missing that connects the fact that even if the animal isn't being hurt or slaughtered it's still wrong in believing in a simple scientific fact!. " Survival of the fittest"!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because they come from a chickens bum, and they are also weirdosWww@FoodAQ@Com

Coz it's like eating a deformed chick!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
