What in God's name do I do with tofu?!
As a recent vegetarian out grocery shopping, I veered towards the vegetarian aisle in Tesco!. Daunted wasn't even close to how I felt when I picked up some tofu!. I felt like a priest in the lingerie department!.
Anyway, I got it home, took it out, laid it on the chopping board and stared it down for about 10 minutes!. All was quiet until Himself broke the silence with a loud and bemused, "Are you going to eat that, or frame it!?" To be honest I couldn't give him a straight answer!.
I'm a competent home cook who can try my hand at most things, but tofu has beaten me to a quivering pulp in the culinary department!. It's now on probation in the fridge!.
What do you do with it, and what do you eat it with!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

haha I just love the way you post your questions!.!.!. they always make me laugh!. =D I think it's time to get the tofu off probation and into your tummy!. LOL
I tried this tofu recipe yesterday!. I got sick of stir fried tofu so I made veggie and tofu pastries!. All you need is a bag of frozen assorted veggies (peas, corn, carrots etc!.) some firm tofu, pastry, olive oil and herbs n spices (which ever ones you like)!.
Chop tofu into little cubes and fry it up in some olive oil until slightly golden!. Now throw the frozen veggies in some olive oil, spices/sweet chili sauce/ soy sauce water you fancy!. Pinch of salt and pepper and fry em for a few minutes!.
Cut the pastry into long flat pieces, fill with veggie & tofu mix!. Close up the pastries and bake in the oven until golden!.
I made mine to look like those little sausage roll thinggies!. You can add tomato sauce for the kids or sweet chilli for the grown ups!. It's really easy and quick too!.
Good luck =)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well it depends on the kind you got (silken, firm etc!.!.!.!.) but you can do whatever you like w/it!. I eat meat but occasionally subsitute w/tofu or tvp and will slice it thin and throw it in a wok or slice it a bit thicker and throw bbq sauce on and bake!. W/the silken, I melt choc chips and blend w/one box of tofu and make chocolate pie!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Tofu being the highly nutritious delicacy that it is must be like steroids to a rabbit, (I'm musing)!.
Rather than waste it, buy a rabbit, feed the rabbit tofu and eat the bunny!. I know that's strictly speaking not a vegetarian answer but it does solve the problem and as a recently converted vegetarian you are allowed the odd lapse!?
That saves wasting the tofu and you know better the next time you go shopping!. Problem solved :0)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Cut it into small pieces and stick it in a stir-fry, basically pretending that it's chicken!. Stick a lot of spices or a sauce on top!.

You can start by slicing it into small cubes (0!.25" x 0/25")!. Tofu!. I would include them in Indian-style curries as an ingredient!. Alternatively, you can use it in dessets, puddings, ice-creams as the main accompaniment!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

1!. Crumble it, put it in a baking dish, add some kind of pesto sauce (or create your own with mint, figs, soy sauce, whatever you can imagine) on top, and bake at 400 for a bit!.
2!. You can put the creamy, silky type of tofu in a blender with some smoked salmon paste, pepper, olive oil!. Then spread on toast!. Use your imagination for what to whirl it with -- makes a good appetizer!.
3!. Saute some mushrooms, add wine, get them good and tasty!. Add to tofu in a baking dish, perhaps add one egg, and bake at 400 for a bit!.
**The block of tofu can be rather bland, use the freshest and tastiest ingredients you can get!. The silky tofu is more tasty, I think!. Usually the more expensive, the better the taste!. All tofus are NOT equal (not even close), so if you are not satisfied this time, try again with a different one!
I like a nice-quality tofu with some spicy korean sauce on top!. Really, you can do any flavors with tofu! Add Japanese touches, earthy notes, even Italian with a tomato pesto!.!.!. good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hehe :) I can imagine your confusion!
Though you can do a lot of different things with tofu, these are my favorite ways:
I really like it when tofu gets crusty!. To get it like that, you can deep-fry it (cut it up in little cubes, of half an inch/ 1 1/2 cm)!. You can marinade it before or after!. The marinade can be all kinds of things that you also like on meat!. Sometimes, salt, pepper and some lemon juice is enough, but I also like to simply buy meat-spices and just use them!. Of course you can go more fancy and use things like ginger, soy sauce, lemon and garlic for instance!. They make a nice combination, like they do with meat!.
An other way is to fry tofu!. Make slices from it, not too thick!. Say, a quarter of an inch!. If you fry it, you can do the same with marinades!.
Marinade the tofu and then first fry it on a high fire, for about 5-10 minutes!. Turn it a few times, and then put the fire low!. Let it go for about 20 minutes, turn it around a couple of times!. This way, most of the moist gets out!. Then, put the fire high up again and fry it till it's crispy for some minutes!.
It will be crispy and crusty outside, and soft inside!. Yum!
Tofu doesn't have a (nice) big taste of it's own!. So it really comes down to how you marinade it!. Use whatever is in your taste with meat!.
For me, the big thing is the structure!. If it's too soft and tasteless, I don't like it at all!. That's why I prefer my tofu crunchy, and with nice spices and herbs!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

With no internal fat, tofu will hold flavoring better than meat!. It does not have to get fat out before putting fat in!.
Here's what I do: Chop it and fry it, serve over a starch like rice, noodles, or fancy toast with cheese!.
That adds the fat, salt, and flavors!. Then I take about half and save it for other dishes, such as a stuffing with bread crumbs for stuffed mushrooms or use in a crabmeat stuffing for salmon!.
You don't have to be vegetarian to enjoy tofu!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

hahaha welcome new vegetarian, to our fine selected community of meat shunners!.
You can do loads with tofu!. I like it best fried!.!.!. but the most important thing is to spice it!.!.with a lot of pepper, paprika, bit a salt, then mix two raw eggs with milk (or a vegan alternative, which I haven't found so far), dive the tofu in it, then bath it in breadcrumbs and fry it in the pan!.

Oh Ya Dancer!
My partner is a veggie so I understand your predicament!. First take it out of the plastic then wrap it in kitchen roll, put it on a plate with a bowl, containing something heavy, on top to press out all the liquid!. Once it is wrung out, gently fry it with your own combination of herbs and/or spices until browned and golden then use as meat substitute in curries, stews etc!. It is bland so don't be afraid to sex up the sauteing (even a veggie stock cube will help)!. It will improve your well being so stick with it!.
PS If you are female veggie, it is important you should drink full fat milk!.
