It is early for Thanksgiving I know, but I will have a family of vegans as guests.?!
I would like to know if there are any special foods I should prepare just for them!. Yes, I could ask them, but I'd like some idea what I might need to do!. I don't want them to be uncomfortable!. I also will have others there who will be expecting a more traditional dinner!. What are the guidelines I should be looking for!? Sorry, this is long winded, but this is my NEW daughter-in-law's parents, and I don't want there to be any problems for her or my son!. She is not a vegan, so she will not be the problem!. You need to talk to them directly!. Older vegans are often more polite and easier to talk to than younger vegans (and have had more practice explaining their diets!)!.
Ask them to bring a dish, and let that open up the conversation -- let them know there will be meat, and ask how you can let them know what's "safe" to eat!. There are wonderful vegan recipes for squash, potatoes, salads, etc!. You might want to be careful not to mess up a perfectly good vegan dish with non-vegan additives!. For example, you wouldn't put butter on the baked potatoes -- let everyone do their own!.
Nuts are a wonderful addition to Thanksgiving dinner, especially as an appetizer or with the dessert course!. A fruit cornucopia would also be a nice touch!.
(-: And don't think of it as a problem, but as a fun cooking challenge!.
I love the Moosewood Cookbook, but you'll have to make sure the recipes are vegan (they also have regular vegetarian dishes in it)!.
Good luck with it!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Instead of making alot of veggie side dishes, make one or two that can be eaten as main courses!.
Just be sure that these dishes do not include any meat or meat by product such as cheese, gelatin, eggs , dairy or honey!.
You can also check some vegan sites over the Internet so you can have an idea of what vegans eat!. the only hard and fast rule is what I said earlier!. No meat or meat by products!.
By the way, it's just one meal so they won't really starve if they eat just the side dishes!. And if they are as considerate as you are, they won't expect a banquet just for them!. They too would respect the fact that not all of the people at the table are vegans!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My favorite Thanksgiving dish as a vegan was stuffed squash!. Luckily it can also serve as a side dish for meateaters too!. The basics of the rest of the meal, mashed potatoes(V), gravy, cranberry sauce(V), rolls, corn(V), green beans(V), and pie(most are V) are vegan or are easily made vegan!. There are rolls that are normally vegan, and I would highly recommend mushroom gravy! The mashed potatoes, if you normally just put milk or butter in, try it with spices or something else to make them interesting!. If you don't want to baked potatoes is always an option too!.
Best of luck, many websites can help you with changing a recipies to vegan and can give you ideas!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Oooh! Get a Celebration Roast!. It's from the Field Roast Grain Company!. They are SO tasty!. Besides that, you can easily make vegan versions of everything else you eat!.
Make the mashed potatoes with vegan margarine (or skip the margarine and do something exotic, like garlic-spinach) and veggie broth or a plain nut/seed milk!.
Do the same with the yams!. (They make vegan marshmallows, if you like that stuff!.)
As for the stuffing, grab some mix from the store (not boxed; get the kind in a bag!.!.!. around Thanksgiving you can usually find it in the bakery) and make it with the margarine and veggie broth!. Put it into a casserole and bake it!.
Vegan gravy is a little bit tougher!.!.!. I'd go for a rich mushroom gravy!. Mmm!.
I totally second the other poster's idea about talking to your daughter-in-law!. You could also ask her parents what they usually eat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
