If everyone stopped eating meat today and became vegan, what would we do with all the livestock?!

Question: If everyone stopped eating meat today and became vegan, what would we do with all the livestock!?
Honest question!.

Would we leave them to die a horrible death, as they have absolutely no resources to protect themselves!?

Or should we continue to eat them, but cease to breed them, and when there's none left, then we can go on to being vegans!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
It isn't really a question worth considering because it would never happen!. Even if the whole nation or world went vegan, which would never happen, it wouldn't happen all of a sudden!.

They are already going to die a horrible death whether it is through starvation or slaughter!.

I want the end of factory farming and inhumane treatment of animals!. I do not want the world to become vegan!. Being vegan is the only way I know to avoid participating in an industry that causes suffering and destruction!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

First of all!.!.!.!."Five Kids Down"!?!? What are you doing to them!? Eating them!? Punting them!? I hope not!.

Anyway, because this scenario would NEVER happen it's ridiculous!.!.!.!.even more ridiculous than the "stranded on a desert island" questions!.

Even if the entire world goes vegetarian, it will not happen in an instant!. It would happen gradually until there is less and less demand for livestock!. Because there would be less demand, farmers would not breed these animals like they currently do and the population would gradually wane!. We wouldn't be standing around with 5 billion cows going, "oh crap, what now!!?"!.!.!.!.!.!.
The only reason that livestock populations are so large now is that there is a demand from consumers!. Farmers are constantly breeding their livestock to create massive herds which would not naturally occur in the wild!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

We could use their milk for cheese and keep them to generate fertilizer with their waste!. We could even cull their blood as some herders do in africa, as a way of using the animals for a food source without harming them!. There will always be a need for pet food, and that must always have meat, so when the animals become too old to care for themselves, then they can be used for pet food and glue!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

well, this is hypothetical, of course, and I dont' know how feasable!.!.

But yes, realizing that domesticated animals like livestock do not have a good capacity to take care of themselves in the wild!.!. and there are WAY too many of them!.!.!.

a more ideal would be for everyone to COMMIT to going vegan, and gradually and HUMANELY use up the bulk of the overpopulation of livestock (while ceasing to breed)!.!. then become vegan

however, we wouldn't want any species to go extinct!.!.!. so there would be some program to keep a small population thriving!.!. perhaps as kind of pets, that produce a bit of milk on the side!.!. It would be similar to my vegetarian friend who has 4 hens that are really her pets!.!. they live well!.!. but, biology dictates that they produce eggs, so she eats the eggs (her hens are not broody)!.

So, we'd want a small population of cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, sheep, etc, etc to live either as pets, or, perhaps long-term they can be re-introduced into the wild, with care taken to maintain a good predator/prey balance so there is not overpopulation, or animals living where they shouldn't (Like the rabbits of australia)!.

Anyway!.!. that would be the ideal!.!.!. if people really wanted to ALL go vegan INSTANTLY!.!. the large overpopulation of livestock could be culled and turned into pet food!. (Cats, for example, are obligate carnivores!.!. they cannot be vegan)!.

But yes, it's agreed that if everyone became vegan, (which would never happen) we'd have to be realistic about what to do with the HUGE population of livestock that is currently being bred to satisfy the western cultures taste for meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would guess the most likely scenario would be that the price of livestock would fall!. So much so that it would be a boon to pet food companies, someone would figure a way to use it as a renewable energy source, or at least slaughter them and use the by products to make fertilizer for the vegatables and fruits that are in such great demand!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

trust me cows wouldn't just overpopulate the earth!. we are breeding them for us to eat!. it's not like there's a ton of them and we're just making use of them as food!. if we stopped breeding so many, their wouldn't be so many!

and i'd rather them die naturally anyway than in factory farms!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, that is an unrealistic situation!. No one is going to stop eating meat all at once!. It will be a gradual process (if it even happens), and take several decades if not centuries!. The livestock population will decrease in tandem without the need for culls!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why is the choice only eat them or let them die!.!.!.

We could always convert the slaughterhouses into farm sanctuaries, and allow these animals to live out the remainder of their lives in a peaceful supportive environment!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hypotheticals are never really worth considering!.

You know, we get this or a similar question on here every couple of days!. It isn't what the scumtroll meant when she put the call out in the Football section!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Let them live out their lives peacefully and naturally, just as we do horses!. No difference whatsoever!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If chickens were defenseless and didn't have a way to hide or survive on their own they wouldnt have survived evolution! Look how long they survived without us!.!.they could do it again!. They'd populate fast!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Won't ever happen, too many meat lovers in this world, including me! Each to their own, right!?!?!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Livestock would take over the world!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

just let them live their little lives!. but not breed them!.
nature will take its course!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i would try to teach them too talk!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

they would be living a peaceful life!Www@FoodAQ@Com

nothing, they would die from the lack of greens that we'd be consuming!Www@FoodAQ@Com

do want they did in jesus christs days let them roam the fields until they died!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Set them free!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think your last sentence is best - the whole world isn't going to stop eating meat "cold turkey"!. But if more and more people become vegetarian for whatever reasons matter to them, fewer cattle, chickens, etc!. will be bred!.

Personally, I think over the next 100 years or so, there will be more and more vegetarians, simply because land is expensive and you can get more meals worth of food out of an acre of land by raising grains on it than by raising livestock on it!. As the population continues to grow, we'll need to squeeze more and more meals out of a dwindling amount of arable land!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

die a horrible death!? do you really think that having no "resources" would cause them to die!? they eat grass!. and plants!. theyd be fine!. plus, theyd die of Natural causes!. thats a lot better then getting your throat slit and being hung upside down to bleed to death!. dont you agree!? and yes, i know thats not how they do it on farms, they "just" shoot them in the head (which is still horrible) but most people dont get their meat from good ol' farmer joe, they get it from a super market, and the super market gets it from, you guessed it, a factory!. the world would be soo much lovely-er if we were all vegetarians or vegans!. no one would be obese!. minimal people would have heart disease!. so, to answer your question, we would let the livestock roam around and keep them as pets!. whats the difference between a cow and a horse!? (:Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yeah, brilliant;-{ then what do we do with all that grass!?
We can't eat it ourselves;-{ we're not herbivores!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
