I need to know if it's ok to...?!

Question: I need to know if it's ok to!.!.!.!?
freeze veggies in a used margarine container!? I heard that freezing food in plastic containers (like butter tubs or margarine containers) can cause chemicals to leak into your food!. Is this true or just a myth!? What's the best solution!? My mom is being cheap and won't by gladlock freezer bags and just uses old margarine containers to freeze veggies and i'm worried she's going to make our whole family sick!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

It isn't the freezing that is the problem!. It is cooking in those containers that may be bad!. But even then mostly there isn't enough of the "plasticizer" in any food that was tested to make a difference in your health!.

That said, I don't microwave in plastic containers anymore!. Why wonder!?

And good for your mom for be a recycler! Remember the three R's Reduce, Re-use, RecycleWww@FoodAQ@Com

I don't think it poses a serious health risk, but I also wouldn't want to risk it!. Plastic is evil in so many ways!. :/ Like others have said, it's mainly cooking in plastic that is a problem!. BUT, margarine containers tend to be really flimsy lightweight plastic which will crack easier when frozen & they don't have a really tight seal like plastic containers that are made specifically for freezing food!. So, most likely, your veggies won't keep as long as they should in the freezer, and they're more susceptible to freezerburn!. I would suggest you keep an eye out at thrift stores, garage sales & such for plastic freezer containers that are in good shape!. They're most commonly square or rectangular & come in pint & half-pint sizes!. Because of their shape, they save a little space in your freezer too, as opposed to cylindrical containers!. I don't think they're really expensive to buy new, but I can't say for sure since I've never bought them new!. All the ones I have were either passed on to me or purchased second-hand!. Actually around this time of year they're probably a little cheaper and more widely available too, since people are harvesting their gardens and/or stocking up for winter!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've never heard this!. You're not supposed to store bottled water for a long time or reuse disposable plastic water bottles for this reason, and you're not supposed to cook food in plastic (like in the microwave), but for freezing I think it's fine!. Just wash the containers out first!. If you're really worried about it, buy some Pyrex glass containers!. I would say that you could try reusing pasta sauce jars, but regular glass can break when frozen or defrosted!. Those do work well for for food storage in the fridge, though, and eliminate worries about chemicals!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

now if you're freezing these you are blanching them ahead of time!?

why not get food grade new plastics!.!.!. old ones if you are that concerned!.!. just toss!.

but tupperware and rubbermaid or more sufficient than any reused plastic of any sort!.

the quality of the freeze is direly effected if it's in a cheap container!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Using margarine tubs to freeze foods should be fine!. By the way, aren't gladlock bags made out of plastic, too!?

If you are really concerned use a large mug, bowl, or plate with aluminum foil on top to freeze!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
