By the way, if you're underweight that shouldn't really be related to whether or not you go vegan!. You can easily maintain a healthy weight as a vegan if you eat a balanced diet and large enough quantities of food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've been vegan for a year!. It's not easy mainly because you need protein and there aren't that many sources for a vegan!. (soy products, beans/peas/lentils etc, nut butters like peanut butter and a few oddball things like seitan)!. I eat soy cheese and occasionally some vegan fake meat products!. But it's tough!. It's expensive too!. You must take vitamin supplements to be healthy, especially zinc and vitamin B 12 or your hair will fall out (happened to a friend of mine)!. The upside for me at least is that I've lost weight and generally feel a lot better!. My cholesterol is down too!. Meat and fish have a lot of fat in them, more than people realize; it's also hard to digest!. There are other reasons like saving the animals!. I do it mainly though for health reasons though!. I'm also a diabetic and my blood sugars have been more even!. If you do become a vegan and are thin, be careful you don't lose too much weight!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi I was vegan for a few years and I was underweight at the time!. It is possible for you to be healthy as a vegan but be very careful about getting enough calcium, iron, vitamin B12 and protein!. I was not careful enough and had deficiency in vitamin B12 and got constant pins and needles and numbness in my hands and legs which is serious as your nerves can be permanently damaged!. My hair also got vey thin which I think was through lack of iron/protein!.
Sorry not trying to put you off just warning you of how important it is for you to make sure you're gettin everything your body needs!.
On the plus side my skin was amazingly clear, I never got ill (colds etc) and I felt full of energy!.
Just make sure you eat fortified cereals, fortified soya or other plant milk and lots of nuts, kelp tablets / seaweed for iodine and get some multivitamins containg B12 just to be on the safe side!.
As you are underweight I would recommend lots of peanut butter and vegan chocolate or whatever high-calorie food you like!.
My parents weren't that keen on the idea at first but if you show them that you will be very careful to be healthy and don't lose more weight then I'm sure they will come round to the idea!.
Good luck xWww@FoodAQ@Com

Sounds like you're almost there anyway, good for you!.

You might want to work on the weight thing!. Increase your protein and carb intake, and make sure you're getting regular exercise!. Tofu, beans, wheat gluten, and nuts for protein, whole wheat bread, brown rice, and fresh vegetables for carbs & nutrients!.

As for going vegan:

Better for animals & the environment
Milk actually has numerous drawbacks

You do need to make sure you get enough B12
Eating out is tougher, and you restrict your choices of snackfoods/processed foods (but those generally aren't the best choices anyway!)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi, There!
It takes a courage to take the steps into being vegan if people around don't understand!.
First of all : buy, borrow some books for them to read!. Do the research online , print them and put it on your parents coffee table;-)
People need a PROOF ( like the life of vegan nutrition:and I'm emphasizing NUTRITION! isn't a proof itself enough)!.
I don't want to go to far, but I can tell U about myself:
No meat products=no cancer ( check: "The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health" by Collin Campbell- amazing book about all the protein meat myth!)
no meat =no toxins of whoever knows where coming from product!.
no meat products+good nutrition=no acidicity which -if happens ( and it happens constantly with meateaters- is followed by inflammation and that's the beginning of whole spectrum of diseases!.
I was vegetarian for a long time, then I became vegan, than I became raw/superfoodist concentrating on NUTRITION! not just the VEGAN DOGMA!.
I do some supplements, I do lots of enzyme rich foods!. Greens mostly!. I do great quality water!. I do lots of thing and I look at the face of an animal without a single personal guilt!.
Tell your parents that Your decision is not about just BEING A VEGAN!. It's about IMPROVING YOUR HEALTH on cellular level!. On every level!
Wish U all the best!

Www@FoodAQ@Com

sorry, you must have your own reasons!.!. if you need someone to convince you!.!.!. you can't be convinced!.!.

it must come from inside yourself!.

simple as that!.

i'm vegan because i'm allergic to animal fats and have seen others health fail due to processed foods and animal product!.

and i've seen and been there in processing farms and plants!.
i'm amazed people will eat that stuff!. the conditions, the filth, the mere processing alone is enough to make one gag!.

the chemicals, hormones, treatment (of the animal alive and the product afterward) and here we whine endlessly about our food and it being bad for us but we'll fork it down no time flat! (then wonder why we are suffering health issues of any sort!.)

if people don't want to suffer!.!. then why is it ok to put any living creature though something we would normally call torture!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

to go vegan- saves animal lives/ may help stop cruelty, can be healthier

not to- wayyy more expensive, not as many food optionsWww@FoodAQ@Com

read the book skinny *****!. it's available anywhere!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Truthfully, I see veganism and raw-foodism as forms of eating disorder!.

By all means eat healthily and choose not to eat animals, but I can't help feeling that to electively put such comprehensive restrictions on something as fundamental as eating indicates problems in other areas of life!.

These diets take up so much time and energy and self-absorption that losing a loved one to it is akin to losing a loved one to a religious cult!. And the holier-than-thou attitude of some practitioners is truly unbearable!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

God made you to eat meat
