Answers:
I am a vegetarian and the only leather I own is on my boots!. The only reason for that is because I'm in the military!. I personally don't like leather jackets, not even when I ride my bike!. I do have a jacket for it, but not leather!.!. !.!. I've been veg for about 8 or 9 years though!. It's up to you and on why you are a vegetarian so don't let anyone give you crap if you do want to wear it just because you don't eat meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's something you owned before you went vegetarian; many, probably most, new vegetarians and vegans continue to wear or use leather items they already own, and then replace them with veg*n versions when they wear out!. Nothing wrong with that, it's what I did and it's sensible and practical!.

And it seems to me many people who've answered would benefit from ownership of a dictionary!.

No you're not being hypocritical; hypocrisy means claiming to have higher standards than you in fact have, or saying one thing and doing another!. So if you said you'd never wear a leather jacket and preached the evils of leather jackets, but secretly owned and wore one - that's hypocrisy!. If you say 'I'm going to wear this jacket till it wears out then I'm going to replace it with a veg*n version' and you go ahead and do just that - not hypocrisy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You can look at it two ways!. Wearing a leather jacket is not much different than chowing down on a steak - either way a cow had to die to get it!. BUT, since you already had the jacket, throwing it away won't do the cow a bit of good and in a sense, it will have given its hide to a landfill and contribute to a society driven by consumerism and waste!. When I went vegan, I kept those items I already had because I am also not pro-consumerism and I found it wrong to waste what I had!. I have been phasing those items out slowly!. I am more interested in not contributing to the woes of the world than in what someone else thinks of my bookbag or belt!.

Ultimately it is your choice and I would not worry what other people have to say about it!. As you can see, there are many degrees along the veg*n scale!. I don't see that it makes any sense to be glaring down one's nose at anyone who is moving slowly and surely towards more compassionate choices!. If someone is critical, I would conclude that they are just generally insecure and need to stare down their snoot to feel tall!. You really can't fix that for them no matter what kind of jacket you wear!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

This question will be answered diferently by many different people!. A hardcore vegan will see this in the same light as draping yourself with a corpse, but no moderate vegetarian would ask you to throw away something you had before your conversion, trashing this jacket just makes the animal's life even more in vain, and replacing it with another jacket will be a needless drain on the earths resources!. I don't however think you would find any vegetarian that would support you buying another leather jacket when this one wears out!.

If you do choose to part with this jacket give it to someone that will use it rather than throwing it in the dump!. It would be a shame to see a good leather jacket go to waste!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, you're not a hypocrite!. Vegetarianism applies to what you eat, not what you wear!. It might be contrary to your beliefs, depending on your reasons for being a vegetarian!. I am a vegetarian for health/taste reasons and still wear some leather and I still fit the definition of vegetarian!. Either way, you might as well keep wearing the jacket since you already have it!. Whether you buy a new one or not is up to you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The description of yourself, since you took up the cause to follow a vegetarian diet, does not necessarily include avoiding all animal products, which is called vegan!. However, I sense a deeper concern for all things animal!. For that reason I will reply as well as if you were vegan!. First consideration must be that while you may now regret certain actions you took which are eschewed by vegans, you are accountable only for what you do now!. As a vegan you would not procure a leather jacket!.!.!.now!. It might seem counter-intuitive to wear that one, but would trashing it, throwing it away, not wearing it or giving it to another - would such action decrease your sense of guilt!? The offense has already been done!. Since it has, perhaps it would be better to honor the animal from which it came by wearing it but explaining to everyone, that you disapprove of the death of that animal for its skin but at the time you obtained the jacket you were not enlightened and now wear it with apology and respect which you are compelled to demonstrate and explain to all who see you!. It is an act of awareness and contrition!. The easy way out of course is to get rid of it - so someone else could wear it and thus do what you are trying to discourage!. I guess in the end it depends upon your sense of obligation to what degree of the vegetable-base construct you choose!. The guilt others try to put upon you is nothing compared to the guilt you assign yourself based upon your own beliefs!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends on your reasons for vegetarianism!. I'm a vegetarian for ethical reasons, so I avoid leather and the like too, but other people eat vegetarian for different reasons and see no hypocrisy!. If it bothers you to wear dead animal skin, then don't wear it!.

@ the vegan vs!. vegetarian debate: I'm vegetarian, not vegan, and I avoid leather!. I'm sure there are vegans who wear leather!. Vegetarianism vs!. veganism has nothing to do with it; it's a question of whether or not you object to wearing something for which an animal has died!. I avoid anything for which an animal has been killed, so I avoid leather, but not eggs or milk!. It really doesn't matter here!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends!. Since you got it before you went veggie, it's probably fine!. Throwing it away would be pretty lame!.

That being said, if your reasons for being vegetarian are that you don't want to support the slaughter industry, going vegan is probably your best bet (that obviously includes not purchasing leather)!. If your reasons are out of concern for the environment, leather is a good purchase!. While it does come from animals and the processing involves using chemicals that aren't so hot for the environment, leather typically lasts longer and overall produces less pollution than synthetics that you need to replace more frequently!.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends on the reasons you became a vegetarian!. Vegans don't use any animal products, but many vegetarians do!. If you a hard core animal rights person with one of PETA's "meat is murder" tea shirts I'd say waring another animals skin is a bit hypocritical!. If this is the case give it to someone, other wise just ware it till it's shot!.
Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you chose a vegetarian lifestyle because you want to protect animals, then it might be hypocritical to some extent, because you're still promoting the slaughter of more animals by buying the leather jacket!.
I suggest buying pleather, or "fake leather" instead!. I have a pleather bag and it feels, looks, and lasts long just like real leather!. :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

you weren't always a vegetarian and the jacket may have sentimental value!.!.!. it might be something you should wear because of your beliefs but if it reminds you of a different time I see no harm in keeping it until you care convicted personally!. Focus on how you really feel about it why you became a vegetarian and if it starts to bother you then get rid of it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Some might disagree with what i am bout to say but no i don't think its hypocritical I mean you dint hunt down some ranchers cow and kill them illegally for money and make your self a jacket to sport around in as a trophy from your hunt lol!. There is a line of furs and leather clothing's and accessories that are labeled with a tag that states there were no animals harmed and that the animal used for this article of clothing died naturally and of a natural cause!. I think it really depends on how you feel do you feel bad for wearing the jacket, if it bothers you and you feel like you have to make excuses or explain why your wearing it or why you even own one then you should retire the jacket, and get a diff rent kind of jacket one that's made of home grown fibers lol ha ha Www@FoodAQ@Com

it's not hypocritcal!.

if you are vegetarian because you want to do what you can for the animals but you wanna wear leather, that's up to you!.

if you are vegetarian because you were born vegetarian then you can wear leather!.

if you are vegetarian because you care for the enviornment then wear it!.
Www@FoodAQ@Com

Kinda!. It's still showing that you ((might)) eat meat!. It'll be silly if you said you were a vegetarian and wore a leather coat!. It's still the killing of animals!. Although, me, killing animals is a natural process!. You eat them and wear them and make country pillows out of them and so on, but that's just what I do!. But don't wear the coat, or eat meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Depends on why you dont eat meat!. If you avoid it due to your own health or dietary choices, then no, that wouldnt make you a hypocrite!. However, if you refuse to eat meat because you dislike the killing of animals 'for our own use', then yes you would certainly be a hypocrite! That also goes for belts, shoes, furniture, handbags, jewelry, wallets, boots!.!.!.!.!.ANYTHING made of leather!.
Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends!. If you think that killing something to eat it is not worth it, but killing something to use it as clothing is more acceptable, because it is a better use, then fair enough!.
But!.!.!.

If you got the leather from the skin!.!.!. that means the meat is left! therefore surely to not eat it would be wasting it! ergo it died for only one reason, not two!.

get my point!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, it isn't hypocritical, because you're a vegetarian!.

Vegans are the people that don't support anything made from animals, or animal products( shoes, clothing, cars, books!.!.!.)!. Vegetarians just don't eat meat or animal food products

Wear the jacket!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well some people might think its hypocritical but the whole idea of vegetarianism is to not eat meat so less animals are slaughtered!.
Since the jacket is already made and bought, it would just be wasteful not wearing it!.

So really its up to you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I dont understand why a vegetarian can't wear a leather jacket!? Vegetarians DONT EAT MEAT doesnt mean they can't wear it and is it even real leather!? UNLESS you don't eat meat because you think its wrong to kill animals, then YES it would be hypocriticalWww@FoodAQ@Com

well, i don't wear leather because it's disgusting!.
you know how they kill those cows, right!?
it's just wrong, and it doesn't make sense to wear leather even though you don't eat meat for the sake of the cows!.

i'm also a vegetarian, and i just don't!.

Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well personally its all up to you
but i think that it is a little hypocritical
i wouldn't wear it, because i love animals
but then again back then u weren't a vegetarian and that jacket has memories so i do see the point in keeping itWww@FoodAQ@Com

I believe it is, but is a matter of personal choice!. Many people become vegetarian due to animal cruelty!. Just remember that wearing a jacket made of dead animal skill subtly conveys the message that you condone animal cruelty!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

nope

i understand it is an animal product; however, you are vegetarian, not vegan

I am a vegetarian, but i play softball, so therefore i use a LEATHER glove

Www@FoodAQ@Com

The jacket is made and has been purchased!. You can't change that, so just use it while you can and then take your concerns into consideration the next time you purchase shoes or a jacket that may contain leather!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, it shouldn't be because it was made for clothing reasons only!. Your 'wearing' something that was from an animal, your not 'eating' it!. Besides it doesn't mean that your some animal killer or something!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The decision to be a vegetarian and the decision to wear a leather jacket are completely independent of each other!. Those who say otherwise should be slapped!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Are you a vegetarian for health reasons or because of animal rights!? If it's because of animal rights then yes you are hypocritical!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you decided to become vegetarian out of compassion for animals and not for health reasons, then it would be hypocritical to wear a leather jacket!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

its unhealthy to be a vegetarian, quit doin that!.!.!.!. and it is kinda hypocritical because your against eating animal meat but youd wear the skin of an animal that was killed for its skin!. but its life, we cant stop the world from making leather jackets, or fur coats, or hamburgers, we survive and are healthy because of the protiens in the meats we eat!.!.!. being vegetarian is really silly!. and it seems more you are being picky than actually gaining from being a vegetarianWww@FoodAQ@Com

Yes

You won't eat animals for nutrition but you'll wear them for fashion!?

Edit: Oh god people, nobody cares whether you're vegan or vegetarian, to the average person you're still a hypocrite!. (if you wear a leather jacket I mean)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why!? The cow isn't using it any more!. Thousands of cattle are slaughtered every day around the world, and about 99% of the carcass is used productively!. Would you rather the skins just get thrown away!? That would be a waste!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
