Vegetarians and vegans, what are your views on pets?!

Question: Vegetarians and vegans, what are your views on pets!?
Do you support and fight for good conditions for pets!? I mean, if you decide to have a pet, like a cat or a dog, do you believe that you should have the right conditions, like a yard for them to run in and stay in, as they like staying outside, or are you the sporty type, to get your dog on long walks every day!?
What about more exotic animals!.!.!. like florida turtles!.!.!. do you believe that they should be left in their natural habitat, and not taken to other countries, like Europe, where they have to live in a limited space!? I mean, is this fair to them!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I find it very important that animals are kept correctly!. I have a cat and she has our large yard plus a field and surrounding yards to be in!. I live in Switzerland and they've made some new laws about keeping pets, like you have to keep guinea pigs in pairs etc!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I didn't become a vegetarian because I thought it was wrong to eat animals - I was just disgusted with slaughter techniques and what is allowed to pass as good meat in the US!. It's not like this everywhere, but seeing "Meet your Meat" completely grossed me out!.
I am an animal lover, but there is a big difference in my mind between a chicken and my dog!. I don't mind wearing leather!. I think for me, I am healthier not eating meat and poultry - that is the main reason I choose not to!.
Pet owners should be responsible and take good care of their pets = or they shouldn't be allowed to own animals!. It's just ridiculous!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

A pet, like any other member of the family, is a huge commitment!. Personally, I think that as a member of a vegetarian family, the animal should be vegetarian too!. Additionally, as a member of the family, what you are going to do when the animal becomes ill or sustains injuries needs to be thought through before you introduce a pet into the family structure!. Are you going to make sure that the pet gets proper health care!? Elder care of pets is crucial too!. I would not put them to sleep when they require intensive or hospice care and more than I would do that to my children or parents!. So a pet is more than a friend; more than just someone to make us feel important and loved!. We have obligations to them and so many people just do not go the distance with a pet!.
As for wild creatures -- why would you want to capture and keep any wild thing!? Zoo's are one thing -- and I suppose that they do have their place in education but to house them in our homes makes no sense!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think domesticated animals are fine!.!.!. As long as you don't abuse them and give them a good home!. But some exoctic animals aren't very nice as pets and might not want to be around humans :/ As for taking an exotic animal to a different country, it all depends!. What kind is it and how much space they need is a question to ask yourself!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Pets like dogs and cats, have been domesticated over thousands of years, so they can not live on their own!. I see no problem keeping them as pets, but I feel it's cruel to keep wild animals as pets!.

I volunteer at my local animal rescue center, but avoid pet stores since they support puppy mills!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Domesticated animals, when treated well, I don't see anything wrong with!. I have a dog who is part of the family!. I think that exotic animals should remain in their habitats!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't eat any animals, including pets!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

"For instance out of 100 dogs were genetically manipulated, exploited in breeding, selection & culling, only 30!.5% (success rate) are considerable to trade"!. They have to do this to satisfy the demand that consumers willing to pay!"
--------------------------------------!.!.!.
In a perfect world, all of our efforts would go toward protecting the habitats of other species on the planet and we would be able to maintain a "hands off" approach in which we did not take other species into our family units, but allowed them to develop on their own in the wild!. However, we are far from such a Utopia and as responsible humans must deal with the results of the domestication of animals!. Since many animals domesticated to be pets have been bred but have no homes, most AR supporters see nothing wrong with having them as companion animals!. As a matter of fact, the AR supporter may well provide homes for more unwanted companion animals than does the average person! Similarly, animals domesticated for agricultural purposes should be cared for!.

However, animals in the wild should be left there and not brought into homes as companions!. A cage in someone's house is an unnatural environment for an exotic bird, fish, or mammal!. When the novelty wears off, wild pets usually end up at shelters, zoos, or research labs!. Wild animals have the right to be treated with respect, and that includes leaving them in their natural surroundings!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
