Why do some Hindus eat dairy but not eggs?!
I live in a diverse neighborhood where there are many people from India!. We were discussing food for an event and they said they were vegetarians and went on about not hurting animals!. That seems great and I respect that!. They also do not eat eggs!. So I asked if they were vegans but they said no, they eat dairy!. Does anyone know why this is!? I might ask next time I see them but I don't want to pry!. Is it because the egg is an animal or is it cruelty somehow!? I don't see the difference between eggs and dairy!. Thanks for any helpWww@FoodAQ@Com

Cows are considered sacred and like a mother because they give milk!. Thus one never harms the mother who nourishes them!. That also means that milking should be natural and harmless without any pain for the animal!.
Eggs are considered impure because of where they come from!. Like you wouldn't eat human ovulation would you!? They are also dead flesh!.
As your one answerer, Jini nicely put it: Satttvic, Rajasic and Tamasic foods or foods in the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance!.
Milk is in the Sattvic category (goodness, nourishment) and eggs are in the Tamasic category (impure)!.
One has to follow a sattvic diet for meditation!. Rajasic foods agitate the mind and Tamasic foods make the mind dull!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm hindu and i'm lacto vegetarian!. So i eat dairy but no egg!.
Its not for any religious reason, i'm not the slightest bit religious!. (athiest)
Religion wise theres nothing stopping a hindu from eating meat!. Beef isn't allowed (like pork is a no for a muslim) because cows are connected in a way to God!.
Now if the hindus are brahmins (or jains, or marwadis ) or other vegetarian clans within the hindu community, then they are traditionally not allowed to eat meat!. Egg might be considered meat because its an unborn animal!. According to their religion they can't harm animals and in the olden days milk was a very normal pain-free thing!. The villagers had cows, they would milk them themselves!.
So it wasn't related to harming the animal in anyway!.
Hope this helped!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

good point!. This has always confused me!. I think what they mean by eating dairy is milk, cheese, etc!. As for eggs - a lot of them eat eggs and the really religious ones consider egg a form of life so dont eat eggs!. And then there are some boot leg hindus from other parts of the world besides India - (I met some carribean hindus with those beliefs) that will eat everything except beef cos they consider the cow sacred but dont care about the other forms of life which defeats the whole purpose of hinduism!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Dairy product that we get doesnot involve any killing or harming and hurting animals where as for eggs we are obstructing a life to take form!.We are killing a innocent creature !.

I can't speak for all Hindus (since some do eat eggs) but it is a religious belief that has now turned cultural!. Eggs are considered a meat category for some Hindus!. It comes down to the belief in mind and body as a whole!. Hindus believe that some foods have positive effects while others are negative for your body!. You are what you eat concept!.
So these are the categories and how they are sometimes described:
Tamas food is leftover, stale, overripe, spoiled or other impure food, which is believed to produce negative emotions, such as anger, jealousy and greed!.
Rajas is food that is believed to produce strong emotional qualities, passions and restlessness in the mind!. This category includes meat, eggs, fish, spices, onions, garlic, hot peppers, pickles and other pungent or spicy foods!. That is why certain Hindus dont eat garlic or onions either!.
Sattvic, is food that is non-irritating to the stomach and purifying to the mind; it includes fruits, nuts, whole grains and vegetables!. These foods are believed to produce calmness and nobility, or what is known as an "increase in one's magnetism!."
Hope this answers your question!. This is in the Vedas (Hindu scriptures) and now it has turned cultural/religious!.
