Is cheese vegetarian?!

Question: Is cheese vegetarian!?
Because i came across vegetarian cheese today which made me wonder whether normal cheese is vegetarian!? I thought cheese was just an animal product!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Because many cheeses contain rennet, (a veal byproduct) they would not be considered vegetarian!. Rennet is scraped from the stomach's of dead calves, and as something resulting from the slaughter of an animal, is not vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Some cheese contains rennin, which is taken from a dead calf's stomach lining, so is not technically vegetarian!. A vegetarian cheese is made with non-animal rennin!.

However, the dairy industry invariably leads to calves being shot at birth or raised as veal and killed after just a few weeks, so all cheese might as well contain renin!. It doesn't really matter as far as the cows and their calves are concerned!.

Have you thought about trying vegan cheese!? Some of it is really quite nice, and while I eat mostly fresh food, it is an excellent alternative!.

Hope this helps!

Technically most cheese is not vegetarian!. Most cheese (unless labeled oherwise) is made with animal-derived rennet!. Rennet an enzyme that come from a calf's stomach and is used to coagulate the milk into cheese!. One brand of cheese that uses vegetable-derived rennet is Organic Valley!. I used to only purchase that brand, before I became vegan!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends on how strict of a vegetarian you are!. It's true that some cheeses contain animal rennet and some contain non-animal rennet!. Some vegetarians choose to not be so picky about the cheese that they eat as long as they are not eating meat!. Most of the time at restaurants, neither you nor the people who work there will know whether or not the cheese contains animal rennet!. Some are stricter and will either not eat animal rennet cheese, or will not eat cheese at all!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Many cheeses contain rennet which is an enzyme taken from a young calf's stomach!. So those would not be considered lacto-vegetarian!.

You would have to eat cheeses that contain synthetic enzymes or enzymes from vegetable sources!. It's hard to know which ones have rennet and which ones are rennet-free!.
