For the same reason most meat eaters earnestly believe that we veg*ns are protein deficient!. Americans have been brainwashed into believing that protein is the end-all-be-all of nutrients and that animal foods are the en-all-be-all source of protein!. The Atkins craze didn't help, but it's been this way for a long time!. When I was in elementary school 25 years ago, the "educational materials" the teacher used to teach nutrition were supplied by none other than the Dairy Council of California!.!.!. pure propaganda!. It's no surprise that many of us know very little about nutrition!.

I have been veg*n for 22 years and have never taken protein supplements or drank a protein shake!. I eat tofu pretty regularly because it's a food I like, not because it's a requirement, nutritional or otherwise, of vegetarianism!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Tofu is just a tasty way to soak up flavors of a meal!. It's never been a staple for me!. The only people I hear talk about protein shakes are body builders, and those are the only people that should be really using them!. And fake meats are for the lazy vegetarians!. They're the tv dinners of the veggie world!. When I first became a vegetarian, I lived off of homemade vegetarian burritos, pb&j sandwiches, nuts galore, and the occasional tofu stir fry!. I'm not a very good cook, so I occasionally lapsed into a Chik'n patty period!. Really, vegetarians who use just those three things you listed are the ones with no cooking skills!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's the sad reality that even many people that actually want to be vegetarian are too lazy to seek out the right information that is put out by a **reputable** source!.

With so many vegetarians thinking that being vegetarian is a personal sacrifice of health or convenience, it is definitely no wonder there are so many ignorant haters that pass through thinking the same thing!.

The most common way for the average person to collect "scientific" data is what you call hearsay!. It's very reliable indeed!. Much of the misinformation is a sick game of "telephone" that was started back in the 50s, who knows, maybe earlier!. Some people take medical advice from the Bible so I'm not going to assume a certain level of intelligence for anyone!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

So as a relatively new veg, I can answer this one honestly!.!.!. I don't think I *need* those things necessarily, but when I first started, I liked to have them in almost everything to sort of curb my cravings for the meat that was usually in those meals!. Once I started getting more comfortable creating meat free, and now completely animal free meals, I stopped relying on the fake stuff to "make" the meal!. Granted, I still use tofu, but not in every dish!. I loved that stuff even before being a veg anyway! =)

The more meals I make, the more comfortable I am with exploring all kinds of different fares!. I never thought I would make Pakistani food, but I made a vegan Dahl the other night that was flippin awesome! No processed foods of any kind in that bad boy! Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because they haven't done their research!. I have been a vegetarian all my life and had not even heard of tofu or fake meats!. Even though some people quit eating meat they still crave it and this is their solution calm their cravings!. There are millions of vegetarian dishes which don't involve tofu or fake meats!. Because people are hooked on processed "convenience" foods!. It's what they're used to eating!.

After all, most people become vegetarian for reasons other than their health!.

I've had lots of young people ask me what to eat, and when I say "fruits and vegetables" they look at me like I'm speaking Farsi!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i am a new vegetarian and i haven't tried tofu but hear its good!. but i will never eat it considering it looks weird!. and i don't eat fake meats!. i never will eat fake meats!. all i really like is fruit!. it is awesome!.lol i barely started my change!. wish me luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Almost everyone else who answered this question is wrong!. I have been a vegetarian/vegan my entire life!. The REAL reason people eat those things is because they are an excellent source of protein, and it's tasty! :) Www@FoodAQ@Com
