You don't say how old your daughter is!. Mine was 14 when she told me she wanted to be a vegetarian and I told her that was fine with me but she would have to prepare her own meals if she didn't want to eat what I made for dinner!. That was 20 years ago!. She started subscribing to Vegetarian Times magazine, became a very good cook, and is still a strict vegetarian to this day!. I think that requiring that she take responsibility for her choice is what made it successful!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
A good book for you to read about health and nutrition is Becoming Vegetarian!. I have the older one and I read it about 11 years ago when I became vegetarian to familiarize myself with how vegetarians get calcium, iron, B12, etc!. It is a very informative book!. They have a newer edition now with more update to date info on the recommended RDAs!. There is a section about children and teenagers, various reasons to be vegetarian, dealing with mixed (veg, omni) company, etc!.
Good for you for supporting your daughter and being open minded! I was about 22 when I became vegetarian and my parents kept telling me I was going to drop dead from malnutrition!. I'm 33 now and have been in great health since I made my decision and stuck to it no matter what people said to me!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Thank you very much for actually trying to learn something about this issue rather than telling your daughter that she is too young to have an opinion!.
Strict vegetarians do not eat anything that comes from an animal but lacto-ovo-vegetarians do eat dairy and eggs!.

first, i applaud you for being honest with your daughter!. kids are naturally curious and i think they, as well as parents, should accept and know where the food comes from!. i think if a lot of parents really thought about the process they wouldn't want to feed it to their kids either (like how they worry about organic veggies but the meat came from an animal pumped full of drugs and antibiotics living in high stress conditions, suffering and in pain before being killed for meat!.!.!. it just doesn't sound healthy nevermind humane)!.!.!. kids haven't gotten to the point that they're just "used" to eating a certain way adn are still in touch with what it is!. and they can still eat a very very healthy diet without eating meat!. as far as info!.!.!. comb the web!. there's a ton of sites out there with tons of info (i'm sure someone will giv eyou links, but if not they are there!.!.)!. try the soy meats, it'll make your life easier to just sub in soy meats for real meats when making meals (and you might like them, i've had a lot of meat eaters i know start eating them)!. you might want to talk to a nutritionist who knows about kids and veg diets!. if she won't eat dairy either that limits her diet further and i'm not exactly sure what a childs requirements are!. i went veg at 13 and i've been healthier since doing so!. i eat cheese but no milk or eggs!. i love soy milk!. i add beans to more things (casseroles, salsas, etc!.), i eat lots of the soy "meats"!. many more fruits and veggies!. as for the soy meats- you can get plenty of kid-friendly stuff like chicken nuggets and hot dogs!. and i'm sure you'll find lots of kid friendly recipes online (me and my meat eating boyfriend love to use the soy ground meat to make tacos, burritos, nachos!.!.!. it's interactive and tastes great!)!. apples dipped in peanut butter are a great snack too!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
All types of things have animal byproducts in them, and are most often avoided by vegetarians!. some difficult ones for a child may be marshmallows (including ones in cold cereal), Jello and many gummies products and fruit snacks!. also, most bullion cubes contain beef or chicken fat, Ramen Noodles included!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I recently became a lacto-ova vegetarian (I still eat eggs and dairy products) and it does take a lot of research and a willingness to try alternatives forms of protein (tofu, soybeans, assorted beans, etc!.)!. Honestly, I would have recommend having her see a dietitian, before, she's makes that decision!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
She is still growing and need a balanced diet!. You should go to her pediatrician and get her a physical, and I'm sure he will suggest that you take her to a dietitian so she would have a balace diet with all the nutrients her growing body need!. And also it'll be a good thing that you make her part of her food preparation, you both can cook a meal once a week for the whole family to enjoy!.
Good luck!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I suggest you simply answer her questions about the foods she is eating!. You may not be vegetarian, but you certainly know where milk, eggs, and meat come from, so just tell her!. Let her find her own way!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
