My daughter can't have these foods - any good substitutes?!

Question: My daughter can't have these foods - any good substitutes!?
My daughter was just diagnosed with IBS, therefore we'll be removing a lot from her diet!. She has to go off all dairy - so we'll do soy or rice!. Do you know of any frozen desserts that are lower in sugar and made with soy or rice!? Does Rice Dream make anything!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I have IBD, which is a similar disease to IBS!.

If IBS is not taken seriously by the sufferer early on, it can often develop into IBD (which happened to me) – so I congratulate you for making these changes now!.

My condition only started to heal, after I had changed my diet and removed many offending foods!.

I read a book called “Self Healing Colitis & Crohn's” by David Klein, Ph!.D – which gave me ideas of what food to eat and what to avoid!.

Harsh offending food may include:

Wheat, gluten and all processed flour
Artificial sweeteners
Chocolate
MSG
Refined sugar
Dairy – low and full fat!.
Eggs
Meat – all types!.
Soy
Rice
Caffeine
Alcohol
Soda

I am afraid it is all trial and error!. I thought rice would be fine but it upsets me, so I have changed to baked sweet potato instead!. Meat, especially chicken, makes me really bad and my IBD has improved since I gave it up!.

It sounds like you are giving up everything but you can find some excellent recipes in books and on the internet!.

I suggest Raw Vegan desserts – as they contain absolutely NO processed sugar or flour!.

For Example: The inside of the rich moist chocolate cake on the Alissa Cohen raw vegan website site is made from figs and nuts!. The frosting is a rich carob frosting made up of avocado, carob powder, dates and mixed berries!. There is a cashew cream cheese covering the top!. The cake is then sprinkled with coconut and crushed walnuts!.

Here are two other sites that may be useful for you!. They do use dairy cheese, where as I would not!. But as I said, it is trial and error to see what works for your daughter personally:

I also suggest Green Smoothies – I like blended water, banana and spinach:

Victoria Boutenko has written a called “Green for Life” that explains the healing proprieties behind Green Smoothies!.

also try to use certified organic produce wherever possible, due to its life giving nutrients!.

Good luck!.

Sorry your daughter is having issues!. Not to complicate matters, but I highly recommend that you AVOID soy in all forms!. Most soy has been genetically modified with all sorts of crazy stuff (think scorpion venom to make the crops more resistant to pests, for starters-google GMO soy for more info) Soy is the leading cause of adult onset food allergies and ailments such as IBS) I also recommend that you make your rice "milks" homemade, since the store bought ones contain artificial and unnecessary ingredients-they are super easy to make at home!. You can also make "milks" from whole grains, such as buckwheat or oat groats, quinoa, cashews, or other nuts!. To answer your question about desserts, you can get a simple sno cone maker at most retail stores (or HSN) to make tasty, low fat/sugar icees!. I make them with agave nectar and spring water, with a splash of real lemon or lime juice, or just be freezing freshly made fruit/veggie juice-then, just shave the ice and you have a nice treat!. The thing that is likely to help her IBS the most is to avoid ALL processed foods-if you can't pronounce or identify the source of the ingredient, don't eat it-its as simple as that really!. Whole foods, in as close to their natural state as possible, give the body nutrition without making it work too hard to digest things it doesnt know what to do with !. Good luck!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Definitely go to your local healthfood store and start asking questions to the food purchaser so you can get the best quality alternatives!. Rice Dream does make ice cream, and it's pretty good!. There's also Tofutti ice cream and bars which tend to be very yummy!.

You will find plenty of yummy snacks that she will be able to eat that are lower in sugar!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You could make her smoothies using frozen fruit like strawberries, bananas, or peaches!. If you use rice milk or almond milk, you get a sweet and tasty milkshake!. If you use a small amount of rice milk in your blender or food processor, you will get something with the consistency of sorbet!. I don't eat dairy and this is a very satisfying and easy dessert!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Rice Dream's ice cream products are wonderful, but they are not low sugar!.
