Heather Mills donating a million $$ in vegan food to poor neighborhoods, is this the best way to promote ?!

Question: Heather Mills donating a million $$ in vegan food to poor neighborhoods, is this the best way to promote !?
A vegetarian lifestyle!?!? These are individuals who are not used to that kind of food and may not feel comfortable with it at all!. Furthermore, they probably will not be able to afford to keep up the lifestyle!. (healthy wise at least)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have mixed feelings!. I think it's great to donate healthful foods, but I doubt that the reason she is donating vegan/vegetarian things is to promote healthy eating!. I think it probably is more about promoting an animal-free diet for ethical reasons!.

That being said, I don't really think it's kind to "help" people by offering them help only on your terms!. (This is the same reason that I am not a fan of charities that "offer" conversion services and prayer!.!.!. before they serve meals or offer other services!.)

In short, it's always great to help and I won't knock those who do!. However, I believe helping others should not be done at the same time as promoting a cause!. (Unless that cause is specifically to help others!.) To me, it somewhat undermines the act of kindness when it is qualified!.

That being said, I happen to know that it's relatively hard to get fresh produce out!. If she donated fresh fruits and vegetables, and other raw ingredients that happened to be vegan, I don't see what the fuss is all about!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Heather Mills is trying to promote herself with this publicity stunt!. If she really cared, instead of giving a million bucks worth of industrial, artificial heavily processed soy crap, she would make sure that these kids got enough high quality, fresh vegetables and fruits!. High quality meat would be better in addition to the veggies, but since she is a vegan, I can see why she won't do it!.

There's also the problem that some people have problems digesting soy!. There will be a lot of kids getting gas and cramps!. Some with thyroid problems will suffer even more!.

A poor family will have a difficult enough time following a good nutritionally correct omni diet, let alone a good vegetarian or vegan diet!.

She did this for the PR, not for the kids!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well to be perfectly honest, I think it is a fabulous idea!.

It is very generous of anyone to donate a million dollars worth of food to a poor neighbourhood!.

Would it have been better in your eyes if she has donated a million dollars worth of KFC, McDonalds and Dunkin' Donuts!?!?

When I was unemployed I started a vegetable garden and baked my own bread!. Many a time when I was too poor to buy food, the vegetable garden sustained me and kept me alive!.

When I was too poor to buy food, I took what was offered with gratitude, I did NOT kick up a stink because something did not suit my personal tastes!.

When I was a regular meat eater, the Hare Krishna food kitchen saved my life many a time and they only serve vegan food!.

I simply can't believe that a truly hungry person who can’t afford food, would complain about being served vegan foods!.

If they did, I think they have lost the plot and they need to learn to become grateful for what they do have (nutritious healthy life giving foods), rather than reflecting on and moaning about what they don’t have!.

Promoting vegetarianism in a very poor neighbourhood is an excellent health idea!. As maybe it will plant a seed of thought!

Maybe the community could come together, find a spare piece of scrub land and working together turn it into a community fruit and vegetable garden!.

Healthy food for everyone whilst building a sense of community!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.what could be better!?

I work at a soup kitchen, and i don't think my guests would be all that keen on vegetarian meals!. Sometimes we are low on meat, and have to serve small portions blended into a largely veggie and pasta casserole, and they will have an uproar over the lack of meat!.

Now -- having said that, we are crying for good fresh vegetables to serve!. So i would sure as heck be interested in a donation, but I couldnt guarantee it would be served as an entirely vegan meal!

It's a way of asserting her lifestyle choice on others (no change there then) !.!.!.!.!.!.If you donate it should be without any conditions!. These are probably people who have no experience of a vegan lifestyle and will not appreciate this kind of food!.!.!.!.!.Just give the money and let the people in the area decide what kind of food is most suitable!. But not Heather!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's her money, her donation
Whatever her agenda might be, whether just to donate and help or promote her lifestyle it won't really matter!. The recipients will either eat the food or discard it as they see fit!.

Www@FoodAQ@Com

As long as the peta whackos stay out of it, she should succeed!. People hear 'peta' and/or vegetarian and get turned off immediately because of the few bad apples in your lifestyle!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Relax!.!.!.these people will be happy they are getting ANY food!. You think the poor people give a damn about the free high quality food they are getting!?!.!.!.and its her money!.!.!.!.well!.!.!.Paul's money!.!.!.!.but still!.!.!.she can spend it any way she wants!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sounds like a true missionary!. Spread the gospel no matter what, and regardless of the state of the people who are the victims!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think it's very cool!.

One she's not doing it so much to promote a vegetarian lifestyle but a healthy one!. From the news report:

Hunts Point Back to School Fair kicks off Saturday afternoon!. The vegan animal rights campaigner is an honorary chairwoman of the nonprofit that organizes the event!.

She tells the New York Post that she wants to make sure children in the neighborhood "have as many nutritional advantages as anyone else!."

Children in Hunts Point have some of the highest obesity and asthma rates in the city!.

Vegetarian and vegan diets!. In a study of 27,766 Seventh-day Adventists,38 vegetarian women reported a lower incidence of asthma, compared with women on nonvegetarian diets!.38 The theoretical basis for the value of vegan diets is the absence of potential triggers, particularly dairy products and eggs, as well as a relative lack of arachidonic acid!. Observational studies have produced conflicting results, including some that suggest a protective effect of dairy product use in relation to asthma!.39 However, in a clinical trial of a vegan diet, 22 of 24 asthma patients noted significant improvements in vital capacity, FEV1, and physical working capacity after 1 year on a vegan diet!.40 Additional clinical trials are required to investigate the role of vegetarian and vegan diets!.

It just doesn't matter if people keep up the lifestyle or if she has donated under what many people consider conditions!. We all make decisions based on our values!. I wouldn't donate meat or money to buy meat because I don't believe in supporting that industry which is often corrupt and like her I believe that people don't get enough healthy foods!. But it is nice that if they choose to keep it up, they can!. A vegetarian diet can be much less expensive immediately as well as being like putting money in the bank:
http://articles!.moneycentral!.msn!.com/Sav!.!.!.

One of the issues is that before the Farm Bills of the seventies twisted the costs of things meat was a luxury and most of the world still eats a mostly vegetarian diet because it's much more affordable!. However, those in the west have come to expect meat and consider a meal without it inferior even to the point that, supported by the meat, dairy and egg industries, vegetarian food choices are ridiculed as elitist even though it's not only much cheaper to eat meatless, it's money saving in spades when it comes to health issues!.
http://grist!.org/news/maindish/2006/02/2!.!.!.

When people are told they should have 9 servings of fruits and veggies they can't imagine because rather than displace some of the meat and junk they are already consuming they think they have to find a way to crowd it all in on top!.
http://www!.nytimes!.com/2007/01/28/magazi!.!.!.

Vegan foods also get a bum rap!. People discount them as froufy, hippie, inferior, etc but that's in part because they fear them (I used to) but these same people don't give much thought to those things that have always been vegan even before the word "vegan" made it into our consciousness (which it was coined in Britain in 1944 but didn't make it to the United States until the eighties)!. Foods such as PB&J and Hummus are okay (well, hummus is that "foreign stuff!.!.!." -- no kidding, my ex-MIL was worried by both pesto and curry -- but that hummus is vegan is hardly considered)!. However, there's a company that makes breakfast cookies and two in the line are vegan!. It's nearly impossible to find the vegan choices in stores because I was told, too few want vegan!. Well, that's a value choice there!. But the reality is that one doesn't have to be vegan to eat vegan (while one does have to not be vegan to eat meat)!. People who are allergic to egg and/or dairy find vegan labeled foods to be a blessing!. Those watching their cholesterol (which does affect the less fortunate) also benefit!.

Another reason people don't eat much vegan food is they are just unfamiliar with it so this is a great, inexpensive way to introduce them!.

But really, look at it another way!. Does someone who's less fortunate have to eat meat!? Because that's what the charity is serving!? It amazes me how many say people should be grateful to get anything but when it comes to vegetarian food it's not good enough yet a vegetarian should be happy to eat at all even if it is meat (which again, is more expensive)!. There's not a lot of support for those who are vegetarian anyway and it's great that there is now!. Everyone can eat meatless meals but not everyone can go the other way (and that's not just value choices either but religion and health issues)!. So this donation is very respectful in a diverse area!.

The donation is particularly welcome in an area that is likely considered an Urban Food Dessert which means those foods that are unhealthy such as gas station food and fast food chains are likely very ubiquitous while access to fresh fruit and veggies are hard to come by and require great effort to get outside the area when those who have less have more issues with transportation and the costs of it!.

say i ate meat!. i was dirt poor and didnt want to spend the last pennies in my pocket to go and get food!. i heard heather was giving away vegan food!. i would go get the vegan food, then i would continue my meaty lifestyle

this is what they will do!. hard headed omnivores are very hard to change!.!.!.i have done given upWww@FoodAQ@Com

Sounds like something a mindless twink would do!. Poor neighborhoods don't need veggies!.!.!. they need complex carbohydrates, starches, and proteins!. Vegetables don't grow muscles and brains!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
