How do vegetarians and vegans deal with social aspects of eating?!

Question: How do vegetarians and vegans deal with social aspects of eating!?
I mean, if you are invited to an official dinner, do they have vegetarian options as well, or do you feel left out, or judged!? What about family meals, if some members of your family are on an omni diet!? Do you feel excluded!? Do they ridicule or disapprove your decision!?
How do you deal with such situations!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
If I go to dinner anywhere where a menu is not provided (official functions, family meals) I tell the host as soon as possible that I'm vegan!. At official functions, I would ask about whether there will be options available or whether I should plan to eat ahead of time!. At a family meal, I just tell them my dietary restrictions and if they prepare something that I can eat, I will eat it!. I do not expect a family meal to be tailored to me, but I will eat salads or side dishes that are available if nothing else is vegan!.

My family is in general pretty accepting!. My boyfriend's mom is a vegetarian so when I have dinner with his family it is not weird at all!. When I have meals at a restaurant I can usually find a vegan entree, and there are always salads and things I can eat!. Asian food provides many possibilities, as does Italian!.

I do not ever feel excluded really!. I have made a choice about how I want to eat that I don't expect everyone to understand or empathize with, so as long as no one is making fun of me I don't really have an issue!. And I have not been made fun of since I was in middle school probably, by other kids!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

First of all, i am very proud i am a vegetarian, but sometimes it gets really uncomfortable or even embarrassing to ask if a dish is vegetarian!. I live in Honduras, were eating meat is part of daily life, so people are ignorant about a vegetarian life stile and diet!.
But it gets much easier when i travel to the U!.S where people are much more educated in that sense and respectful about this kind of choices!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well I was at a cousin's wedding a few months ago, the restaurant was like one of the most expensive in the capital city so of course there i had a meal made for me!.
But at school its like omg:| thats really really bad for you
I just stand up for myself and say it's my choice!.
What really amuses me is when other 16 year olds that rot their brains drinking alcohol every weekend then ridicule ME for being vego!.
Some people are rather supportive though, some of my friends want to become one!.

Ususally I'm fine with it though in a whole, I just don't like being judged on my beliefs:)

That's a good question tho!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's tough sometimes!. In NYC most restaurants have veggie choices, but many think that veggie burgers cover it!. I don't eat dairy either so that narrows my choices even more!. So, I just don't eat out as much as I used to which I actually find to be good both for my pocketbook and my waistline!.

I just went to a family wedding and I hadn't seen them in years and didn't tell them I stopped eating meat!. They were very upset with me for not letting them know so that they could request a special plate for me!. Next time I'm speaking up!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

If I go to anyone's house for a meal and they don't have a veggie option, I just have the meal without meat or fish!. But if I go to a restaurant without veggie options, I leave, after letting them know that they should have, as more and more people are going veggie now!. My sister is also veggie and my friends are too , but our 2 brothers and their wives are not!.If we all go out for a meal together we just accept that they eat meat and we don't!. They didn't believe at first that we'd stick to it, but 7 years later they do ! Www@FoodAQ@Com

Salad, there is always salad!. And most likely bread!. People judge you all the time, really i am a vegetarian!. They think that it's impossible to live without meat because they think it is the best thing ever!. also they think it is weird!. In a situation where they are ridiculing you, the best thing to do is act like you don't care what they say!. If that doesn't work, stick up for what you believe!. I have never felt excluded!. I've never had too much trouble!. Everyone who knows me well knows I'm veg*n and good friends have always made sure I'm fed at their homes!. I've been to a couple of work luncheons at steak houses that sucked pretty badly, but I just speak to the waitperson discreetly and get something like a baked potato and steamed veggies!. My family has never, ever been a problem!. I can cook and make sure I'm well fed, and I share good food with them, and it's all good!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm a vegetarian who lives in Russia where they have only non veg food galore!
Yeah I do get wierd looks when I order a big mac without meat, but I guess five years down the line I've learnt to live with it!.
Yeah people do judge you thinin wierdo!!!
Coz according to them a life without meat is no life at all!. I beg to differ though!.
Believe me!.!.!.!.there are no vegetarian options here!.!.!.exept 4 salads which I consider rabbit food!!
Man there have been times when I'm goin hungry to class and the smell of grilled chicken drives me crazy!. BUT!.!.!.!.princeples are princeples!!
