Am I at risk of getting sick for being vegetarian?!
My boyfriend seems to think that vegetarians get sick more becuase we don't eat meat!. I asked my doctor what i should be taking and she said all meat offers you is iron and protein, which i make sure i get in and also take a mulit vitimin!. Is there something I'm missing!?

the answer is NO - you will not get sick if you are vegetarian
however, you will get sick if you dont eat a healthy and balanced diet!.

Yes and no!. The important thing is to keep track of what nutrients you're taking in!. I wasn't careful when I first became a vegetarian and developed iron-deficiency anemia!
Multivitamins are great, but even if they say they have 100% of your daily value of something, your body might not be able to absorb it!. for example, a vitamin contains iron, great, it also contains calcium, great!. But if you need iron, calcium lowers your body's ability to take in iron!. Find a good multivitamin that does what you need it to do for you!.
Again, the best option is to try to get the max of your minerals through your food!. :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

You're more likely to get sick on a carnivorous diet!. The body uses a huge amount of its energy to digest meat, thus leaving less energy for your immune system!. Not only is meat harder to digest, but we cook the meat, which kills the natural enzymes in the meat that aid in breaking itself down!.

you tend to feel tired more often than normal!. I support your choice of being a vegetarian but if you don't get your protein you will get sick and tired, that is why I recommend eating eggs and tofu as a meat substitute!. For the other stuff meat gives you (it gives u alot more than just protein and iron) take vitamins and multi grains!. I my self would never lose my precious meat but my brain thinks up different senarios so i researched this topic to finish a senario if i was a vegetarian, how i seek nourishment that meat gave me, without it!. As long as you get the nutrients from other complex proteins you do not need to eat meat!. I have been a vegetarian for 18 years and when I had acute pancreatitis last year the doctor told me that had I eaten meat I would have been affected years earlier!. So, vegetarianism saved my life!. Pancreatic failure is deadly!.

Just up your Vit C to enhance the iron absorption and if you are taking dairy product, you might not have to worry of Vit B12 which is essential!.

Dear Vicky, IF i'm the doctor i would say the same thing!. Not all the doctors heard the word vegetarianism!. Not all of them studied nutrition!. Obviously through my experience, no DOCTORS like "healthy" vegetarians!. You understand what i mean!. Try to find any better nutritionist to address your nutritional question!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I got a goiter from over-indulging spinach and they were running around like chickens with their heads cut off not knowing what was wrong with me!.
Any decent nutritionist or naturopath would have told me it was my thyroid and overconsumption of goitrogen food without enough food with iodide to compensate!.
It all left when I switched to the meat/carb diet and I lost like 25 lbs because I wasn't retaining so much water and I'm my old skinny self again, lol!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I was a vegetarian for 20 years and healthy for all of them!. I also didn't bother with any of these nonsense supplements!. I just made sure I had marmite every now and again for the vit 12 (I think!)

Well you're obviously not sick, so don't worry!. Do you know what I said to my workmates who are worried about me!? I said I would eat fish if I got sick and needed extra nutrition!. They backed off!.
The thing is I will never get sick, so I won't eat fish!.
